Post-Wedding Non-Chop

December 22nd, 2008 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Cupcake

Lots of bees have done the “post-wedding chop” — after growing their hair out for the big day, they got out the scissors after the honeymoon to don a new (easier) look. Me? Well, I have straightened my naturally curly hair for about the last 7 years, and in doing so I have always kept it shorter so it was easier to straighten (but I no longer liked it curly while it was short — it created an unattractive triangle-head effect). Since growing my hair out a bit longer for the wedding, it became more time consuming to flat iron, so I started wearing it curly again and I’ve been getting lots of compliments. I’m still getting used to it and trying to decide if I like it, but since it’s a little longer at least I don’t look too much like a triangle-head.

Now I’m just not sure if I should keep growing it out and go back to my curly roots for good, or chop it off like all the other fabulous brides of Weddingbee past (and go back to my daily flat iron addiction, as well). One of the reasons I started straightening my hair to begin with was because when I turned 21 and started going to bars, I found that I was given a much harder time getting in with my curly hair — apparently it made me look younger. When I would straighten my hair, I would never have such a hard time, so when it came time to get a job post-college, I decided that the straight hair made me look a bit more mature. Now that I’m a little bit older (28 — what an old lady! ;-) ). I guess I don’t have to worry about that as much. And, Mr. Cupcake seems to like the curls (and he especially likes that I can get ready a lot faster when I go au naturale).

What do you think I should do? Keep letting it grow and stick with the curls, or follow the trend and chop-chop-chop?

I think it looks great as it is now, but if you like flat ironing too…what if you go a medium length so you can go curly or straight? Just a thought :)

I think it looks great curly, and it probably does make you look younger, but that’s not at bad thing by your later 20s, is it? I’m not a fan of being tied to time consuming routines like flat ironing on a daily basis. Plus, Mr. Cupcake likes it ;o)

I like it natural and curly! I’m a little biased with my long and curly hair, but I couldn’t handle straightening it everyday. I do it about once a month to mix it up.

I’m a fellow curly girl…you can have the best of both worlds! The secret to eliminating the dreaded “triangle” (i’ve been there) is layers. So if you want to go shorter just have layers cut in so that you can wear it straight and curly without the triangle.

I used to straighten my long, curly hair for precisely the same reason. However, my fiance met me when my hair was curly and has always preferred it that way. So, I wear it curly most of the time for him. If the occasion warrants, I’ll flat iron. If Mr. Cupcake likes it curly, I say give it a try.

I like it curly! It’s an easy change and you can go back and forth, which is what I do. I prefer flat iron but it’s so nice to just go curly once in awhile. Very easy.

As a curly haired bee myself I say stick with the curls! They look great on you and they are so much easier to take care of!!

As for curly hair products, I’m a big fan of Deva Curl. It is a bit expensive (I usually go with cheap products) but it works great and lasts forever!

I’ve found that if something is easier, I’m happier. I’d say to stick with the curls for a bit longer, you look gorgeous!!!!!

I vote for the curls! you look great with them, and they are so cute! Besides… your hair will get super healthy if you stop using heat to straighten it. Or at least, mine did :D

I LOVE that you called yourself a triangle head! My mum has super curly hair, and struggled with how to properly manage it for most of her adult life….both humorous and cruel in only the way children can be, my siblings and I developed nicknames for her various hair stages, and The Triangle was a long-standing one.

From her experience, I know having curly hair is a challenge, but I also have seen that since she got the right cut, the right products and the right routine, she gets nothing but compliments on her hair non-stop, and people really associate a lucious head of hair with my Mum.

So naturally, I’m very biased and would recommend that you keep your curls!

I’ve learned over the years to love and accept my curls and I HATE how long it takes to straighten them.

Rock ‘em, girl! :D

I’m biased because I have straight hair and I’ve always wanted curly hair, so yes, keep your hair long!
