Wrapping Up the Wrapping

December 23rd, 2008 @ 2:31 pm by Mrs. Deviled Egg

It’s that time of year again when the Christmas presents are stacking up and things need to be wrapped. But regardless of whether the present is for the holidays, a birthday, a shower, or a wedding day thank you for your bridal party, wrapping techniques are standard.

I love wrapping presents! I think it’s because I love receiving gifts that are beautifully and perfectly wrapped and I like to pass that on to others, assuming they feel the same way. Similar to how an invitation sets the tone for an event, gift wrap establishes my expectations for what is inside the packaging. And I think going an extra step to make the present look good makes the recipient feel special.

I know it’s the thought that counts, but which of these do you think your bridesmaids would rather receive? A present wrapped in a Walmart shopping bag?

At lease they used a cute bow, right?

Or something like this?

Wrapping a pretty present is easy. Check out this tutorial:

From my experience, a combination of patience and the right tools makes all the difference. Some of my favorites wrapping supplies include:

Hallmark wrapping paper

This is a favorite of mine because it has a grid printed on the back, making it easy to cut a straight line. Also, this paper is the perfect thickness––sturdy enough to hold its shape, but not so thick and stiff that it doesn’t fold well around odd shaped items. They also have self-adhesive wrapping paper. I’ve never used it, but it looks pretty cool.

Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter

I just bought one of these this year and it’s well worth the $5 I paid for it. It is so much easier and faster to use than scissors when cutting across an entire sheet of wrapping paper.

Scotch GiftWrap Tape.

I like this tape because it blends well into the gift wrap. If you wanted to go with the ‘no tape showing’ look, pick up some double-sided tape or use a glue gun.

Other must-haves for wrapping include:

  • Tissue paper. Just like the paint on your walls, color is always more fun than white.
  • Ribbon. If wrapping paper were a dress, ribbon would be the sparkly necklace. Whether you use curling or satin, a coordinating ribbon can really dress up the package.
  • Scissors. A good sharp pair that is used only for cutting paper is best.
  • Gift tags. I love the ones at Hallmark because they coordinate with the wrapping paper, but sometimes I’ll make my own out of scrapbook paper and card stock.

When it comes to wrapping presents, do you enjoy it or dread it?

Miss DE, I should have expected you to write about this subject… little miss crafty-pants you! I LOVE wrapping presents! It’s like therapy! And you’re absolutely right… the paper makes all the difference in the world. I love stocking up for next year right after Christmas!

I also LOVE wrapping presents! However, this year I feel like I cheated since I ended up having to buy a bunch of gift bags for people since my wonderful FI dumped all the random boxes I had laying around just waiting to use for Christmas. Sad! But I still get to have fun since I also love ribbon and curling the ribbon with scissors! I may go a little crazy….but I usually end up with gorgeously wrapped presents!

I love gift wrapping too! Beginning at about age 10, my mom used to have my sister and I sit down and wrap presents she had purchased for my two brothers, as well as my dad so she could focus on other things… I’ve been hooked ever since!). I have a hint about how to save on wrapping paper though- one of the dollar stores here (”everything for a dollar store”) carries the grid Hallmark paper under another brand “Heartline” on the tag, but has the Hallmark branding on the inside of the paper (along the grids). So you pay $1 for the roll rather than the $6-8 for the same roll in the other stores. :)

I love wrapping, but I am not very good at it. Mr. Taffy is AMAZING at wrapping, so we made a deal this year: he wrapped presents while I cooked dinner and did the dishes. All of our gifts look amazing thanks to him! I wish I had his skills.

thanks for the tutorial!! I honestly never thought about turning the ends in first, I usually pull the bottom flap up first. but this way looks a lot easier and neater.

thanks! :)
