DIY Truffles

December 23rd, 2008 @ 6:11 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

I have been in the kitchen for the majority of the morning baking goodies for Christmas. As I was making Oreo truffles, I thought of all you bees.

Truffles I made for sister Spring Roll’s bridal shower

I couldn’t stop thinking of what a wonderful favor or treat for a candy buffet the truffles would make. Wouldn’t they be so cute in a truffle box, tied with a ribbon?

I have been making these truffles for the past few years, and have always been complimented. The best part? They are so easy to make and only require 3 ingredients!

Chocolate Oreo Truffles, originally taken from a Kraft magazine

36 Oreo cookies (almost a whole box)
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese
1 large bag (24 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Sprinkles (optional)

Finely crush Oreo cookies (I place them in a large Ziploc bag and crush using a rolling pin). In a large bowl, mix Oreo cookies and cream cheese until well blended (I use my hands for this). Shape mixture into 1 inch balls. According to package directions, melt semi-sweet chocolate chips. Dip balls into chocolate (I use a fork for this) and place onto wax paper. If desired, top with sprinkles for color. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Place truffles into small muffin cups; serve on a platter or in individual truffle boxes. Store in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

Do you plan to make any treats for your wedding?

And what a great idea for a wedding! I recently made them as favors for a christmas party.

I make these every year, they’re sooo good! I keep them in the fridge/freezer until ready to serve because I think they taste better cold. I also use Baker’s chocolate squares, and add a tiny bit of vegetable oil to thin out the chocolate (makes it last longer) and it gives the chocolate a little bit of shine. They look so cute in the mini cupcake wrappers too! I’ll sometimes melt white chocolate and drizzle that on the oreo truffles, or icing and use a decorating tip. The possibilities are endless!

I’ve been making these truffles for years, and they are DELISH and sooooooo easy to make. (and I am totally kitchen challenged, along with many other rooms of the house!) These would be a fantastic, cheap, chic favor for your guests!!!
Kristin those are some great tips - I will be sure to try the veggie oil next time.
I also prefer them cold as well as dripping white chocolate on them to give them a color contrast. Sprinkles are fun, too!!
Again, what a GREAT DIY favor or dessert buffet idea!!

I love making these, and people always complement me on them too! I’ve made them with the flavored double-stuff oreos before, but found that it is best to scrape the filling out of about a quarter of them before crushing to keep the same texture for the filling.
