Our Union at the Union

December 23rd, 2008 @ 9:26 am by Mrs. Taffy

My latest wedding planning obsession is ceremony and reception decor. I have some ideas that I would like to run by the hive, but I realized that I haven’t blogged about our venue yet! Let’s take a tour so I can get blogging about my decorating obsession. ;)

Mr. Taffy and I did a lot of research on venues in the metro Detroit area. At the end of the day, we chose the University of Michigan Union, a venue that is walking distance from our house! Here is the exterior of the building:

We love the ivy. I took these shots in early September, so I don’t think the leaves will be as lush in May.
The front doors are lovely. I cannot wait to set up a fun shot exiting the building after the ceremony! :)

The grounds are very pretty and should be a perfect place to take pictures with our family while not taking them too far away from the cocktail hour.

If you look closely, you can see the second floor windows peeking out from the ivy. Those windows are in the Pendleton room, our ceremony location.

This is the interior of the Pendleton room. There will be no tables, and the chairs will be set up in rows for the ceremony. I love the slate floors! I’m not so crazy about the oak paneling, though.

Here is the entrance to the ceremony room. More paneling! :( I am going to make some banners soon to dress them up.

Right down the hall is our reception location, the Ballroom. We love the windows, chandeliers and wood floors.

A closer look at the building’s original chandeliers:

These are the chairs for both rooms. The Pendleton room chairs are brand new, but the reception chairs are really beat up. Take a look:

I’ve never been crazy about chair covers, but we will be renting some.

While we were taking photos, they started setting up an event. Here is an example of the free tablecloths- they don’t go down very far. We’ll be upgrading those for sure.

We were thrilled to find a venue where we could have our ceremony and reception in one place. The location is also great; there are tons of bars if people would like to continue the party after our reception ends. It is also walking distance to some hotels (and our house, which will definitely not be serving as a hotel). ;) I also love that we pass by the building often; I can even see the flag on top of the building any time I turn down our street! It gives me butterflies when I see it.

Judging by the comments I received when I joined Weddingbee, a lot of you (hello, Michigan alumni!) have been in this building too! Have any of you attended a wedding here?

I’ve never attended a wedding there, but one of my friends from college did get married at the Michigan League. The union is awesome though, I think you’ve picked a fantastic venue!

GO BLUE!

Never been there but it does look amazing. From the pictures the paneling isn’t so bad… but I’m anxious to see how you dress everything up!

Well, it’s no Ohio State….lol sorry I had to (Ohio resident here). The space does look very nice though. Loooove the ivy. Can’t wait to see how you dress it up; I’m always fascinated by ceremony decor for some reason.

i love the onion! not a typo, that’s what me and my friends called it. you can also scoot across the street [kitty corner to the munion] and take pictures in the law quad. it’s gorgeous in there. of course there’s also the art museum right in front with that funky statue thing or oh! the cube! the cube behind the munion! you’ve got to give that thing a spin. i plan on spinning it while i’m on campus this weekend. :-)

while i’ve been to plenty of student group meetings and napped in many different rooms in there, i’ve never been to a wedding in the union but i’ve seen a few while i was at school. i imagine that it would be beautiful. i can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

As you know, Taffy, my wedding/reception is also at the Union. We’re having our reception in Pendleton (where your ceremony is) and ceremony in the Kuenzel Room on the 1st floor. We definitely want chair covers for the reception. The chairs that Ken showed me in the Pendleton Room were red, which doesn’t go with our color scheme. I’d almost rather have the Blue “M” ones, but he told us they’ll be in use in the Ballroom.

My best friend and her hubby had their reception in the Ballroom, and it was beautiful!

@Jessie516: Whoa, I don’t remember the chairs being red in the Pendleton room! eeep!

The ballroom chairs are really beat up, so you are not missing anything! ;)

@Tea: Yep, we are doing our pictures with the bridal party in the law quad, but we thought we would do the family pictures right on the lawn. Which normally happens first, family or bridal party photos?

@Miss Peep Toe: Thanks! :)

@Mrs. Coconut: Yay for Michigan! :)

@EAQ219: lol, I’m sure the Ohio State facilities are just as lovely. :)

@Mrs. Pinot Noir: Thanks!!! We are really happy with it. I can’t wait to taste the food! :)

GO BLUE! It’s going to be lovely I think. The location is beautiful and there is a lot you can do to dress the space!

@Miss Taffy: it can go either way. but the weddings i’ve been in, they did the bridal party first so we could get on to the reception to hang out before the bride and groom showed up.

I too know the halls of the Michigan Union well. You picked a gorgeous venue. We considered it but it ended up being to far from Detroit for some of our guests. I love too that the picture locations are endless. Like a few others, I’ve been to a wedding in the League, which was really nice, but the Union is just a little grander so it should be even better. Congrats on finding a venue!

Hello,
I am thinking about having my wedding at the Union….any tips or tricks that you learned? Did you have a wedding planner? Did you have a valet? Any information would be wonderful.

Thank you,
Miss Honey Bunches

@Miss Honey Bunches: Hello, and sorry for the late reply!
The Union was wonderful… the rooms were so beautiful and the staff did an amazing job with everything. We were so happy!

We didn’t have a wedding planner, just Ken at the Union. We did have a day of coordinator, but I would not recommend that company for a variety of reasons. We didn’t use valet, as we realized that they wouldn’t drop guests off at the front of the Union, and the structure (which we already had to pay for) was not too far from the valet drop off point, so we didn’t think it was worth it.
If you would like to talk about anything, please send me a private message through weddingbee! :)

@Mrs. Taffy: @Mrs. Taffy: @Mrs. Taffy: @Mrs. Taffy:

I am getting married in the union this summer. I feel lost with decorating the ballroom. My color is pale yellow. I am not a fan of chair covers, and the nice chairs are $8 each, way above my budget. Ideas…
