Part XII: The Grand Entrance

December 23rd, 2008 @ 10:26 am by Mrs. Pinot Noir

Mr. PN is a die-hard baseball fan. You might recall that we even had some of our engagement photos taken at Yankee Stadium. When we first met I didn’t know the difference between a strike and a ball and I had never been to a baseball game before. Now, 5 years later, Mr. PN has converted me and I am now a major baseball fan too! We love going to baseball games so much that last March we drove from Washington DC to Florida for the weekend to watch a single spring training game (for those of you non-baseball fans - these games are just for practice - they don’t even count)! Now that we live in New York we can go see the Yankees all the time. Here we are at the second to last game at the old Yankee Stadium in September:

So what does this have to do with our reception entrance you might ask?

Well, when we were trying to determine who would be our MC to announce our grand entrance we thought it might be fun to have a celebrity recording. Immediately Mr. thought of Bob Sheppard, the voice of the New York Yankees. He has been the public address announcer for the Yankees since 1951!!

You can hear his voice by watching this short clip for the YES Network on YouTube:

So, last winter we wrote Mr. Sheppard a letter and asked if he would be so kind as to record our grand entrance and the announcement of us for the first time as husband and wife. Well, after a few weeks we received a call back from his son saying that he would do it! He told him to contact us about a month before the wedding and we could send a blank cassette, a script and a check (of course) and he would record the announcement!

We received the tape back and we were so excited to have the recording. There were a few problems that we had to address to make it ready for the wedding. First, since the audio was recorded on a cassette you could hear the “white noise” in the background - especially when the volume was turned up loud. Secondly, since Mr. Sheppard’s voice isn’t exactly upbeat, we needed to find a way to make it a little more fun. Lastly, we needed to get the audio from the tape to a CD so we could play it for the wedding. Lucky for us, Mr. PN’s awesome friend Paul was able to clean up the audio and add the background music we selected (”It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones).

It was our turn next. As you can see in this photo, Mr. PN’s friend is completely freaking out. He is also a die hard Yankee fan and he was so shocked and jealous that we had Bob Sheppard making the announcement! It was a complete surprise so he didn’t expect this at all!

Up next, the Pinots put those dance lessons to good use!

I love this idea and it’s the third time I’ve heard of it now! My friend Carolyn had the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies (recorded), and Mr. T’s cousin had the voice of the Flyers (he was there!). How fun!

that’s so awesome! (by the way, i’m in the same boat as you - before meeting my now husband, i went to baseball games to people watch & eat hot dogs because i never understood the game!) we actually had a baseball themed wedding & we had a video recording of Tommy Lasorda wishing us wedding blessings. it was sooo hard to keep it a secret, but it was so worth the reaction we got from our guests! it’s so exciting to hear of other brides stories of having a “surprise” announcer or wedding wisher. :o)

If you are interested in arranging a recording with Bob Sheppard I would suggest sending him a letter at Yankee Stadium c/o the NY Yankees. They will pass it along to him and his son will call you to discuss the details of the arrangement (thats how we did it).

Be prepared to have a script with a pronouncitation key (mispronounced my brothers name which required some post production) and timing included.

It is also possible that the tape will need some post production getting it cleaned up — Mr Sheppard only does analog (tape) so you also might need to get it converted as well.

@D & : @ChrissyM: I would love to post it on Wedding Bee but he announces everyone by first and last name so I need to protect their privacy.
