A Ring Changes a Guy Too.

December 25th, 2008 @ 10:45 am by Mrs. Martini

A friend of mine got engaged this past Friday. I found out today and I was so incredibly excited for her! Of course with every engagement, the first question asked is “how did he propose?”. So we went through the ritual of excited chatter about all things a newly engaged girl talks about - how he did it, when he did it, etc.

And then she told me something interesting. In the three years that she has been with him, he was never one to show much affection. He refused to act affectionate with her around his friends, and always acted the part of the “man”. But ever since they got engaged, he has completely changed. In fact, he was so excited about being engaged that he admitted he was giddy on his way to pick up the ring. And on his way home, he stopped every random girl his eyes landed on in order to tell them he was on his way to propose to his girlfriend, and showed them the ring to ask what they thought. Knowing her now fiance, I was shocked. How adorable is that? Since then, they have been attached at the hip, even in front of his friends. Life has been bliss for them as they bask in their newly engaged status.

I’m not quoting this as fact or anything, but generally speaking, they say an engagement ring completely changes a girl. She immediately floats up to cloud nine. Any relationship issues tend to dissolve right before her eyes. Mice sing to her. Birds fly her ball gown around before slipping it on over her head. Pumpkins turn into magical horse drawn carriages. It’s always about the girl.

Of course we know that all engaged guys are ecstatic to be getting married, but I thought it was really nice seeing such a change in this guy, because you really don’t see it that often.

Did your fiance change in any way after the proposal?  How about you?

My guy stayed pretty much the same, but every so often his eyes get shiny and he tells me that he can’t wait for me to be his wife :)

@Mr. Bee: my fiance gave out bagels at his office with a picture of him opening an empty wallet with this expression: O.O. And me next to him grinning like a loon waving the ring! Muahahahahaha!

@ Miss Martini: Yes mine did change a bit. Since we don’t live together yet, he’s all excited about moving in with me after the wedding. All of a sudden he was significantly more interested in buying household goods–like pans! dishes! furniture! I was like, whoa there Martha! He’s in nesting mode.

Mine did. He calls me twice as much…tells me he misses me all the time and always wants to talk about our future home.
He also uses it as an excuse to go lighter on spending–gifts, going out, etc…but I don’t mind, we are planning a wedding!

Most especially he is excited about the honeymoon…he CANNOT wait to take me (and is making most of it a suprise. All I know is we’re going to Italy!)

My husband also had to tell everyone. We were out of town for the weekend, at a very elegant old hotel, and the entire hotel staff knew by the end of the evening. He texted every one of his friends (who had known he was going to ask) to tell them how it turned out. He presented me with the phone, so I could call my mom and my sister. He told random strangers on the street. He told everyone at work. In the first week, we had to go to every place that we hang out, in order to tell everyone (you know, our favorite waitress, our favorite barista, the gal who owns the used bookstore…) in person. In the weeks after that, he was soooo excited every time we ran into someone we hadn’t yet seen, or hadn’t thought to tell.

I was quite a bit more reserved, although very happy. I mostly wanted to have some time all to ourselves before involving half the world. So it really amazed me that he was just dying to tell absolutely everyone!
