The Gift of Blurb

December 26th, 2008 @ 4:25 pm by Ms Fondue

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season! Now that Christmas has come and gone, I can safely show you the photo books we made for our parents using our engagement photos.

We used Blurb to make the books. This was the second time I have used them — the first being a wedding gift to my bridesmaid Becka and her husband of photos I took at their wedding after their photographer flaked out on them back in spring 2007. This time I used a couple of Blurb’s newest options: their thicker paper and the ImageWrap hardcover.

I was really happy with the way the books came out. Here is the front (on the right) and back (on the left) of the book. The back was just a mirror image of the picture on the front.

You’ve seen our engagement photos (or, if you missed them, they are here and here), so I won’t bore you by showing you the whole book, but I thought I’d share a few of my favorite pages.

Here is a spread over two pages. This is also the photo we used for our holiday cards.

There were also a few pages of individual photos of us. Here’s Mr. Fondue’s two pages.

I liked these pages, although it looks kind of distorted in this shot because I didn’t want to flatten them out to make it look better.

Here’s photos of us on the carousel.

And in front of the food stand at the fair.

These are the last two pages in the book. I thought the walking away shadow shot was cute as the last photo.

Did anyone else make their own photo books?

I just recently made a Blurb photobook of our engagement pictures to see what they were like. I see great reviews of it here on weddingbee and thought I can make one, especially since we don’t have a photobook as part of our wedding photography package. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It is now sitting on our coffee table and I plan to do a thicker one of our wedding. I think the quality is great for the price. Beautiful book you made.

Miss Fondue - Love the book!!! I’ve been working on one myself for our engagement photos. In the second picture, it looks like you have one image that takes up two pages. How did you do this in the Blurb software? Maybe I’m missing a layout, but I just can’t seem to find that one. THANKS!

@Kate: There’s no actual layout for it. But you can choose the full page layouts for two pages, use the same picture on both of them, and just enlarge them and move them around until it looks like one picture continues from one page to the next. ;)

We’re using a blurb book as our guestbook, for every two pages, one is photos and one is blank. I’m pretty excited :)

That is such a thoughtful gift. I love that you did two types of picture settings. You two are a cute couple!

Thanks so much for this post — I’m about to start on the Blurb book we’ll use as our guestbook, so I’m glad to see that yours turned out so beautifully. And it’s always a treat to see your e-photos again; they are so fabulous.

I love photobooks. I’ve seen a lot done through iPhoto but no Blurb books in person.

Question: While trying to decide whether my next photobook will be with iPhoto or Blurb, I’ve looked up all kinds of reviews. It seems like some people have complaints about the color saturation with the new thicker paper at Blurb. Is everything rich and vibrant with your book?

This is a great idea. How easy is it to follow the software? (I’m somewhat computer challenged)
Also, what format do your photos have to be in? I’m assuming jpeg?
This is a very tempting idea for me since a lot of the photographers I’ve interviewed are charging $800 and up for the first book!

I used Blurb once. Was sorely disappointed with the quality and that’s quite the understatement. I hear they send it out to different printers. Judging from your experience, I guess we got the runt of the litter? I requested a reprint, but the reprint was even worse which just ticked me off more.

@AD: I was completely happy with the color in my books. :)

@CK: The software is really easy to follow in my opinion. You just choose a page layout, drag and drop your photos, and then move and resize them until it’s how you want it. I believe both JPG and PNG are supported.

I too was extrememely dissapointed with the quality of the photos and color saturation. I will not be using them again.
