Weight Loss Woes

December 28th, 2008 @ 12:46 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

I was on the colorguard (or flag corp, whichever) in high school, and I was in the best shape of my life. I could easy do 100 pushups and situps. My legs were in great shape from dancing on the football field 5-6 days a week and my arms were cut from throwing equipment around while dancing on the field. And I was bloody skinny. Not so much anymore. I started gaining weight before Mini CC was born, and while I did lose most of my pregnancy weight, there’s still some hanging around.

Now that Christmas is over, and I no longer have the holidays as an excuse to not bother losing weight, it’s time to get serious.

The weight that needs to go isn’t a lot (about 15-20 lbs.), but it’s there, and I can feel it making a negative impact on my health. My back hurts, my hips hurt, and I’m tired all the time. I don’t have a lot of energy. It’s definitely time to make a change.

What I don’t want to do is crash diet. I’ll gain the weight right back and those crash diets are usually not very good for you. I want to make a positive change in my lifestyle.

I already eat pretty well. I can’t eat a lot of carbs, because they wreak havoc on my stomach. Plus, Mr. CC is a diabetic, so we shouldn’t eat them anyway. Diets don’t really work for me anyway. I have no will power and as soon as I tell myself I can’t have something (chocolate or sodas, or whatever) that’s all I’ll want. I need caffeine, so I can’t give up on soda/coffee completely, but I do drink diet soda and use fat free creamer and splenda in my coffee. I do, however, need to drink more water. I like to put those crystal light packets in my water. I can slug down bottle after bottle of that stuff!

What I need is a good exercise plan. It’s not easy getting motivated to work-out. I get very, very bored with walking/running. I need constant motivation. Or at least constant entertainment.

Momma CC bought me Wii Fit for my birthday. The first time I got on it, I was devastated. My Crab Cake Mii got all pudgey around the middle and the darn thing told me my Wii Fit age was like 42. I messed around with it for a few minutes, but didn’t really have any desire to get back on it. That was two months ago.

A few days ago, I sucked it up and climbed on again. Yes, Crab Cake Mii got all pudgey again and my BMI is still way too high. But this time my Wii Fit age was 20. That’s a huge difference! I’m not sure what I did differently this time, but it obviously worked!. So I spend about 45 minutes hoola hooping my way to very sore abs. It felt good and it was fun. I probably could have kept at it for quite some time, but it was about time to get to bed (I had to work night shift last week and needed a nap that afternoon to prepare). I haven’t had a chance to get back on, with two night shifts, Christmas, and then a road trip to retrieve Mini from her Dad, but I’m anxious to get back on and play some more!

I’m also going to attempt the hundred pushups training program. I can do about 12 right now.

What tools are you using to lose weight? Is dieting working for you? What do you do to motivate yourself?

I definitely recommend the 100 pushups program! I just ended week 4, and I am up to doing 40 consecutive pushups, and my abs are much tighter just from that alone. It’s hard, but so rewarding! And it takes less than 10 minutes every other day. Good luck!

I’m starting 100 pushups too! I can only do the “alternative” pushups and am just starting week 2. Please keep us all updated on your pushup journey!

My husband and I started doing Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred. We’re only on day 4, but it’s a good, quick workout.

I work out with a trainer. Love that he tells me what to do instead of me thinking of new things, but definetly not easy on the wallet! Good luck!

We got a Wii Fit for Christmas, so once we get it away from the cousins (they’re addicted to the ski jump), we’re hoping to put it to use. I like that it can be done at home, a minute here and a minute there.

I joined sparkspeople.com a few months ago. I was slow to get on the website at first but now I try and visit the various sparksteams (ie, brides to be, runners, and lots others) and read the posts. Reading the threads give me motivation to go out and do something. Maybe you can find a gym buddy that way? Good luck! Remember, all you need is just a day or two (or maybe more) to get hooked on exercise and then you’ll want it all the time.

We bought Dance Dance Revolution for Christmas. I am very reluctant at working out, but this is fun-and we do it together and love trying to beat one another’s scores. Then on MWF, I do the 100 pushups program (I learned about it on here a few weeks ago!) We’re also keeping track of caloric intake and cooking together, we have 7 months, so I hope it works.

@Miss Demeanor: I am way too clumsy for DDR, I tried, and I failed. I can’t seem to master the balance games on my Wii Fit either! My mom uses DDR.

I haven’t tried Wii yet but what I find effective was Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. That thing rocks!!! I am in Iraq right now and I work so much that I don’t get a chance to go to the gym. Once I did my research I found that dvd is the only way I will get a good and meaning full workout and actually see results. To top it off it is only for 20 minutes!!! I swear I was in pain by the 3rd day. I could tell it was working and I am begining to see a difference.

I also joined sparkpeople but I haven’t done much on it.

Here is the link to it

Good luck

My brother got Wii Fit for Christmas. I’ve been using it for the last few days to work out. The first day I was 39 (I’m really 22!) then I was 26, and this morning I was 24. A little persistence in that game goes a long way!

Mr. Taffy and I just made a pact to work out together at home as much as possible. Instead of coming home and watching a movie, we are going to pop in a fitness dvd! I got us exercise mats for Christmas, and we just picked out the dvd’s on amazon. I will let you know how it goes! Good luck with your fitness goals! :)

I use Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. I also just bought her game for the Wii and I got a three disc set of her DVDs for Christmas. I like her style, and tend to follow her workouts more than other DVDs. I’m planning on getting a Wii Fit within the next month or so too. Wii Sports is a good workout when I’m feeling lazy, because at least I’m somewhat active and moving my arms about. My arms and back were really sore after playing for the first time!

Don’t beat yourself up over the Wii fit age. It really is meaningless and improves as you begin to get a the hang of playing the game. I go for variety to keep from getting bored. I go to the gym and on the days that sounds too boring to handle I do an exercise video or one of the work out video games. Just keep it fun! I tell myself I have to work out at least 3x a week but the way I go about working out changes depending on my mood.

Weight Watchers, all the way. I shed 27 pounds, have a BMI of 21, and am in love with fitness.

Where before I never even liked walking to the mailbox, I now run or bike everyday and I started working on a strength training program as well.

WW is great because you don’t have to give up things you love to lose weight, you just have to think more about what you eat. The program is awesome and I’m the healthiest I’ve been in my entire life.

Bets $65 I ever spent, plus, I made that money back and then some because I wasn’t eating out as much.

Like you I always seem to set a goal for myself then flub it. But I just joined the biggest losers club, and now I’m working on weekly goals. It’s “How much can I lose this week?” Not “My dress fitting is in 4 months!” Keep your goals small, try drinking a glass of water for every soda you drink-for a week. It takes 7 days to break a bad habit, you may be surprised what new habits you pick up! I lost 5lbs last week doing it this way. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Yoga!! I used to be one of those people who tried a bad yoga class once and thought it wasn’t even worth the time or effort… then I attended a class along the lines of “power yoga” and left with a cardio workout, but an even better strength training workout. The key is finding a great teacher, sticking with him/her, and you’ll watch your body change shape. Pair it with a cardio routine and you’ll be thrilled!

I know how it is to try and lose weight before your wedding. I had a hard time but ended up losing 24 pounds in three months with Phentramin D. It gave me so much energy and I feel great. I didnt have a ton of weight to lose (30 pounds) and I am almost there. http://www.SlimEffects.com
