Consider Me Sashed

December 29th, 2008 @ 10:30 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

While I’m home here in Michigan, I decided to take advantage of my free time to do a little crafting.

After battling through piles of fabric, burns from my hot glue gun, and pricks with a needle, I’ve emerged victorious, and am ready to share my results with you all!

Here it is- the wedding sash DIY.

Materials:
Fabric
Ribbon
Needle
Thread in coordinating color
Small pearls (optional)
Velcro
Hot glue gun and glue

1. You’ll need about 1/2 yard of fabric, depending on how many fabric flowers you’d like to make. For the sash itself you’ll want about 1 yard of ribbon. Adjust this to your waist size, of course. To secure the ribbon around my waist, I bought a pack of Velcro squares.

2. Time to cut out the flowers. For this project, you’ll need to cut two large flowers and four smaller flowers. A template can be found here.

Cutting along the dotted lines on the template will maximize the fluttering of the fabric. And who doesn’t love some fluttering?

3. Stack your two large flowers on top of one another.

4. Fold the small flowers in half and arrange them on top of the larger flowers, angled and crossing over one another. Kind of like you’re folding a box.

5. Sew small stitches in the middle of the flower, through all the layers. Tie off the thread when you’re finished.

I’m a terrible sewer. Please don’t judge me!

6. The finished flower! It will lay flat initially, but with some strategic sewing when you attach it to the ribbon, you can get the petals to be fluffier. Another option, if you prefer the flatter look, is to glue some small pearls to the center of the flower to hide the stitches. Very cute!

7. Finally, you need to sew the flower on to the ribbon, at one end. Glue a Velcro square at each end, so that if you wrap the ribbon around yourself they’ll stick together.
And…

Voila!
Cute, no? And trust me when I say this was a cinch to make.

Do you have any easy DIY wedding projects to share?

Oh lord, I first read the title as “Consider me slashed”!! I’m very glad to see instead of “slashed” you have a very adorable sash. :)

@Mrs. Cookie: For moi. I don’t really like the one that comes with my dress, so I decided to remedy that. :)

The sash is super cute! I’ve seen the tutorial online about a dozen times, but I never knew that with the right material it could turn out like that. You inspired me to make a version of my own with felt, and it was so easy. Thanks!

@melissa: I used satin. Which I thought would be hard to work with, but it really wasn’t!@chasingkismet: That’s awesome! :)
