About Mrs. Quiche

Will You Become…

January 2nd, 2009 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Quiche

I may be slightly biased, but I do believe that I may have the best proposal story. Ever (yes, biased).

Let me take you back to a gorgeous July 2nd… (It’s long, but bear with me - it’s worth it!)

Having celebrated our birthdays (they are 5 days and x years apart) the week before with a group of our closest friends, Mr. Quiche had the idea for the two of us to celebrate on this particular Wednesday night – make dinner together, watch a movie. We both worked all day, and around 4 PM, he called and offered to pick me up from work. Excited that I wouldn’t have to slink into the underworld that is the Grand Red Line el stop, I said, “Great – thanks!” We got home around 5:20 and Mr. Quiche told me to just relax and read or watch TV, and he would take care of making dinner. Once it was ready, I came out to a lovely cheese fondue (my favorite), a bottle of wine, and candles on the coffee table. Just before we ate, he suggested that we watch “Love Actually”.

Right, so this is my absolute favorite movie, and one I tend to watch by myself, in the dark while I cry (okay, we have watched it together before in the past, but Mr. Quiche just doesn’t feel the need to watch it over & over & over). He started the movie instantly. It seemed a little early to start the movie, but I went along with it (side note – I fall asleep around 20 – 30 minutes into every movie that we watch at home and he wanted to make sure that didn’t happen!). We enjoyed our fondue and wine, and Mr. Quiche stopped at one point to give me my “surprise” (gift)… Guitar Heroes for the Wii! I became addicted to this game while visiting our friend in NYC, so was very excited!

I thought it was a bit strange that the sound was a little off from the lips, and stranger yet that Mr. Quiche didn’t spend an hour trying to figure out what the h*ll was wrong, as he would NEVER stand for watching a movie like that.

Anyway, the movie continued and around the 93-minute mark, this is what we saw:

Incredible, right? Mr. Quiche knows that this is my FAVORITE scene in the movie. I mean, come on! He is pouring his heart out to the woman he loves (but can’t have)!

Mr. Quiche poured his heart out to me (and luckily, he CAN have me!), we pushed pause and he got down on one knee in front of the couch. I said, “YES,” and proceeded to cry for a good 5 minutes or so. We were so happy and excited. :)

We then started to make rounds of phone calls to family and friends who shared in our excitement. Mr. Quiche’s friend (and Best Man) R invited us to meet him out for a celebratory drink. He knew Mr. Quiche was proposing that night, so he surprised us by gathering some friends at Erie Café (where we had our first “real” date). My friend (and bridesmaid) N and her boyfriend were at the theater in the middle of Sex and the City, and when I told her, they left the movie to meet us – how great is that?! It was awesome to be able to toast to our engagement with our friends in the same place we had our first date!

I can’t explain how much it means to me - the thought, time and effort that went in to making this the perfect proposal for us, and we will have it forever (Mr. Quiche also set up our video camera on the desk to get my reaction and the actual proposal!)

Do any of you have the moment captured on film?

Very cute and clever of Mr. Q!! :)

Our engagement was also captured on video tape, but it was definitely not as well planned as yours. My best friend was recording it and the camera is all shaky and sometimes pointed at the sky, the ground, etc. but you can hear us and you see the important parts!

That is incredible! How creative!

Love Actually is our favorite movie as well, and in the middle of our wedding ceremony, my husband pulled a “Love Actually” surprise. After stepping on the glass, my husband held onto my hand and said “wait,” before I turned to walk back down the aisle. A curtain at the end of the room parted, and out came a 7 person gospel choir, singing “All You Need is Love” acapella. He pulled this off without anyone knowing. It was the most incredible surprise. All our guests sung along. Best surprise ever!!!

What a brilliant and sweet way to propose! I was very touched by your story as Love Actually is also one of my favorite movies and I had a Love Actually inspired proposal from the same scene too! It’s a great scene isn’t it? Congratulations Miss Quiche!

Thanks everyone! Obviously, I agree with all of you :) Mr. Q is pretty incredible and gets MAJOR points for this one!

Our friends who are dating, but not yet engaged, groan for him setting the bar so high with regards to the proposal.

Lillindy: No way! I will not let ANYONE watch it :) I didn’t even like watching it…I was a hot mess of tears. & I’m an ugly crier, trust me!

Someone asked me how he did it - well, Mr. Q and one of his best friends found a backdrop that looked similar to the one in the movie, something Londonesque (they didn’t have to go too far - his fiance’s courtyard was perfect!). So, they filmed 3 or 4 takes (I wish I had footage of that!), then he sent it to his cousin, who is a documentary filmaker in NY, & she edited it into the original movie.

It was a group effort - I was (am!) thrilled!

Umm wow that IS the best proposal I have ever seen. Hands down. My favorite movie to watch while Mr. Avo and I were doing the long-distance thing. Every time he would leave me I would go into my room, turn on Love Actually, and bawl my eyes out. Every time without fail.

The bar has been set at a new high. Now all there’s left is skywriting, extreme sports or a chartered private jet.

Or karaoke, embarrassingly sweet karaoke…

you go Mr Q!
