So Many STD Options…

January 2nd, 2009 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Quiche

Since we are having a destination wedding, I initially thought it would be pointless to send save the dates. Why not just send the invitation with all of the information so that everyone could get their trip booked? Mr. Quiche actually stepped in and said that we “have to send save the dates. The invitations can’t go out until February”. Okay, I thought – he wants to do STDs, we will do STDs!

Then me and my indecisive brain took over and I couldn’t. decide. on. ANYTHING! Panic set in when I realized that this was only Step One of wedding planning and if I couldn’t make up my mind on these, what could I make my mind up on? Wouldn’t this set the tone for the entire wedding? I did some Googling around and decided that if other couples could have fun with their STDs (ha), then so could we!

We initially liked the idea of sending a postcard. After playing around with pictures on Photoshop that we took on our “research” trip, I came up with a black and white burnished picture of the beach (very cool, in my opinion):

… and a Pop Art poster of Mr. Quiche and me (that I can no longer find since Flickr has changed their photo editing software! Grr to you Picnik!).

We took a quick picture using iPhotoBooth as an example.

I liked both of them, but I couldn’t help but think that there was something more fun and unique that we could do.

Stay tuned for our final save the date choice!

What about you – did you play around with multiple formats/layouts until you found “the one” for your STDs?

OMG, yes. I think all of my ‘maids were happy to finally receive their STDs because it meant I would finally stop asking their opinions on everything from which photo to use to whether or not the font was more legible in bold.

Yes, we had trouble too! We also are having a destination wedding so we wanted to send out STDs pretty much as soon as we had a venue and date set, to give people plenty of time to plan. So we sent them out almost a year in advance and it was definitely stressful b/c it meant choosing our colors, style, etc for the wedding right away! It also meant setting up our wedding website right away, b/c we wanted to include the web address on the STDs. Anyway, it ended up working out fine and in retrospect it was probably good b/c it forced us (me) to make decisions rather than spend months mooning over various ideas. Also, you don’t HAVE to make your STDs match the rest of your wedding stuff later on, but I like be consistent.

@kathy: Good for you for getting them out so early! Wow…I am impressed :) You were about months ahead of me. I’m always afraid of being too far behind on things, but oh well!

@Mrs. Penguin: Thanks! I liked that one, too :)

Both are cute. I have to say though that the black and white one makes me wish I was invited. I think its great to do the save the dates because it gives you the freedom to express your personality. I DIYed mine and it was totally worth it. Initially I had an idea about holding signs and taking a photo but then one day I was searching thru a couple of websites I saw it. I knew immediately I wanted to do that save the date. It fit with our personality and our venue location. It was alot of work, lots of pictures and a lot of time spent figuring out photoshop. But the positive response I got was worth it. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be perfect. People will love it and the happy news it brings.

Love the STDS. We aren’t having a destination wedding, but since we live at least 3 hours away from his family, and my family is 1000 miles away, we needed to do STDs, and somewhat early. We’re getting married in August and sent them out the day after Thanksgiving. As for formatting them, my GOODNESS was it a project. At first I had simply thought we would do plain, basic, STD magnets. (I LOVE the magnet plan–it’s wonderful). My FI actually did the final design, and they are hilarious. They are our faces superimposed into a vintage album cover, and we made them look like a rock poster. We are so happy, and have had so many wonderful comments on something that could have just flown under the radar. (If you’d like to email me to see it, let me know–jill@jillrosenpr.com). Anyway, good luck–and I say, go with your gut!

I love both and can’t wait to see what you actually decided - some combination of the two or something completely different?

We struggled with making a decision on what our STDs should be as well - also a destination wedding (on a much smaller scale, though - just a beach 3 hours from our current home that happens to be my hometown).

I admit to having a slight peference for the black and white version because it reminds me a bit of what we finally decided on for our STDs. We wrote the date in the sand during one of our many “research” trips. :-)

@NiceWedding: You guessed right - we decided on something completely different :) Lofe the sand idea. I’ve thought about doing something like that for Thank You cards!

@MISS STOUT: Sounds adorable!
