I spent eight years in the Northeast working and completing my education. Having split time between two sides of the country has given me a true appreciation for both coasts. It has also provided an overabundance of cross country drives, flights and long distance relationship fun/misery! I love my family, my doggy Emma, fabulous wine, Anthropologie, politics, reading, being outdoors, exploring new cities, and good movies! My fiance and I are complete opposites, but somehow we have managed to fall completely and hopelessly in love.

Heritage: Blending Old and New

January 2nd, 2009 @ 2:06 pm by Mrs. Glitter

I’ve been thinking lately about family and the many ways in which a bride and groom can choose to honor family heritage. The first things that pop into my mind when I think about the word “heritage” are cultural (makes sense): a native dance, traditional wardrobe, food, maybe even a minister who conducts the ceremony in a native language. All of these special elements are so fabulous and I am constantly fascinated when I learn new things about different cultures. However, when I think about my family, we are so far removed from anything Japanese. Seriously. I have white friends that are more Japanese than me.

My family has lived in Los Angeles for four generations. Generational ties to my native city rarely come up in the course of normal conversation - however, it is a pretty cool factoid (at least I think so). So I was thinking about how I can incorporate my L.A. heritage into the wedding somehow. Then it hit me… earth to Miss Glitter?! I’m getting married in downtown L.A. Why not try and honor my family history by taking wedding pictures that capture downtown? We could blend new with old, because downtown L.A., like many major cities, has retained its historic value in some places and continues to erect modern infrastructure in other places. Here are some photos I gathered for inspiration…

The Old

L.A.’s Angels’ Flight: a historic landmark that captures old downtown.

L.A. Central Public Library: I heart libraries! I swooned over Carrie’s would-be wedding at the NY Public Library in the Sex and the City Movie.

L.A. Jewelry District: This is where Mr. G got my engagement ring and we both bought our wedding bands. So many historic buildings!

Philippe’s French Dipped Sandwiches: Just celebrated their 100th anniversary! If you are from L.A. and haven’t been there, GO. NOW.

The New

Downtown Street Corner: Not sure what this represents…but it kinda looks modern, right?

Freeway/Skyline Shot: I’m obsessed with this camera technique! Isn’t it pretty?

Walt Disney Concert Hall: A very popular site for picture taking. If this place isn’t modern, I’m not sure what is.

Have you thought about how you will incorporate family heritage into your wedding? Do you have specific ideas of what you will showcase in your wedding photos?

I will probably take the same photos that every bride does at my venue. But, if I am lucky enough to keep the wedding short and have a few minutes inside after the ceremony is over, I would really love to take a photo of my silhouette back-lit by one of the large stained glass windows. This would undoubtedly take some “doing” (e.g. a step ladder), but I definitely think it would be worth it.

Our family heritage will be incorporated in our massive photo family tree installation craft project displayed during our cocktail hour. We have a long history of 50+ year marriages that we would really like to honor.

I’m having my Asian tea ceremony at my grandma’s house, at the exact same spot, same furniture, and the same tea-set which my parents used 30 yrs ago when they got married :)

we used photos around LA (lots around downtown) for our table numbers. we drove around to our favorite sites, held up a blank poster board and later photoshopped in each table number. guests loved them so much they asked to put the whole set up on our wedding website since they didn’t get to see all of them after the wedding.
