Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, Stay at home fiance (formerly in nonprofit communications) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

Okay, well, that isn’t EXACTLY true.

We’ve already set it. A few times…

Mr. D’orsay and I were engaged on August 10th, 2008. I think we set a date the following weekend and wrote out our guest list on the back of a used envelope at happy hour on the beach. There are some days that I really miss Miami… I digress.

I mistakenly thought setting a date was the easiest part of planning a wedding. In my mind, we set the date and people would show up; we began with the wonderful date of 10/10/09. I have a terrible memory so my though process was obvious. I could see myself being unable to recall the exact date and thinking, “what is our wedding anniversary? Well, we got married in October—the tenth month… oh, I know! 10/10 is our anniversary!” Not to mention 10/10/2009 is the same in both the British date writing (day/month/year) and American (month/day/year). Pathetic I know, but useful and handy!

Additionally, October is very beautiful in Maryland. The humidity begins to die down, the heat subsides and we begin to get little pops of colors in the trees. So I began to imagine our Maryland fall wedding, with bright orange trees and our wedding colors of deep aubergine and chocolate brown.

For wedding favors—how about copper fall leaf wine stoppers? The cake? Lets put fall leaves on it! The invites? Fall leaves! Fall leaves!

SEE! FALL LEAVES!

But upon further consultation with our nearest and dearest, we soon found that 10/10/2009 was not to be. Many of our friends and relatives are teachers or students and a mid term vacation to a different country would be fairly difficult. So we went back to the drawing board and after much research of UK, US and Australian school/university holidays, we finally ended up on a date at the end of August.

Also, after talking to my photographer, he reassured me that the leaves don’t even really change ’til November anyway.

Did you have difficulty setting a date? Did you have to change it multiple times too?

We picked our wedding date around family too. My brother and cousin go to the same college, we picked a day that was during their spring break so that they both would be able to attend our wedding. We didn’t want to have our wedding in the summer. Didn’t want our guests to be sweating their arses off during the ceremony in Hawaii heat. :)

We set our date for August but then had to work around our families conflicting schedules. We ended up with September which is my favorite month anyways so all was good! :)

You already know about our saga picking dates. It was the hardest part of wedding planning by far. ;-P

No, we picked November 14th 2009, mainly because it gave us time to save, as we were engaged 9/20/08. If for some reason someone close to us had objected, we would have changed it, but luckily it works for all the important people.

At first we thought we’d get married in 12/08 since it was a year after our engagement. We soon realized that we wanted a few months to just enjoy being engaged before having to start the planning process, so we pushed our date back to the summer of 2009. We landed on our official date (6/20/09) because it was one all of our vendors had open! :-)

Picking a date was suprisingly easy for us. Due to daylight savings time our venue required that after Oct 12th the daytime ceremony move from 11am to 10:30am. So, we picked the last Saturday we could have the wedding at 11am… I think we got lucky!

I orginally wanted July 4th, b/c it is my favorite holiday but we decided it wouldn’t work b/c I would still have 2 weeks of school after our wedding before we could go on our honeymoon… so we decided on August as well, b/c I have the whole month off from school :)

Boy did we have a difficult time! Our date was originally set for a morning wedding on 5/2/09, but my future MIL told us how unlucky May was for weddings, plus his parents couldn’t understand the concept of a daytime wedding and really wanted us to have an evening wedding. So, our date changed to a Friday evening wedding. Friday the 13th of March!!!! :) It was the only date that my officiant and photographer were both available. What luck!

Haha, FI chose 10/10/09 b/c it was easy for him to remember. He always thought he was going to have to engrave the date inside his wedding band, but now he says he’s gonna choose something else since he’s confident he can remember the date. We’re in New England, so I’m actually hoping there will still be leaves on the trees around here.

Oh the drama with date picking. After a good bit of pleading from my mother to do so, we ended up deciding on a July 4th wedding. Fiance is a school teacher and we wanted a date where we could go on a honeymoon pretty quickly without him having to miss school and we have huge families and thought a holiday weekend would allow them to spend an extra day with us. We originally wanted Memorial Day, but the best man’s sister had already scheduled her wedding that day. And now one of fiance’s sisters is pregnant and due about 10 days before the wedding so she won’t be coming at all. Its created a lot of family drama.

We had several issues setting a date. Similar to Miss HC’s story, asian psychics had to get involved and, at times, it wasn’t pretty. :)

but in a seriousness, it is quite a process to set the date. like you - i really, really wanted a fall wedding. due to circumstances beyond our control, our wedding will be in june. it kinda changed everything in terms of my vision (and i still get a little bitter when i peep at fall color palettes), but i’ve learned to move on from it. btw, i love that picture!!

We started with 10/10 too! I thought it would be super easy for him to remember, but he actually thought it was too cheesy! We will probably be going with the next weekend, either 10/16 or 10/18 (Friday or Sunday), but it depends on if our locations will be available.
