Comments showing up as “Anonymous”

January 4th, 2009 @ 4:59 pm by Mrs. Bee

Recently, some blog comments have been showing up as from “Anonymous” even though the commenter is signed into Weddingbee!

Comments from these users are still showing up as signed in on the boards, so it sounds like only the blog comments are affected (and only for some users).  This bug started a few weeks ago and we’re a bit stumped.

Our apologies to BeachbrideT, Sezzy, flbeachbride, LT1982, gabbydancer, mrshoneybun and Newport Nuptials… and any other affected users!

If this has happened to you, could you answer the following questions in the comment area below?

  1. What browser are you using when blog comments show up as Anonymous?  It may be easiest to click here and paste the results into your comment.
  2. If you use more than one computer, does your username show up in one place and not the other?  If so, can you think of what’s different between the two?  (different operating system, different type of browser?)
  3. Finally when you sign in… do you check the “remember me” button or not?  Whichever way you sign on… could you try doing the other one and see if that helps?

The problem with “anonymous” comments started a few weeks ago, and we’d love to get to the bottom of it.  Please help if you can.  Thanks guys!

EDIT: It looks like this bug has been squashed!  If your comment has been marked as Anonymous in the past, please try again below!

I have this problem sometimes, but not always. I am using Mozilla 5.0. The problem affects both of my computers, but I use Mozilla on both. I do click the “Remember me” button on one computer, but not the other. I have tried not clicking it when I sign in and the problem persists. However, sometimes the problem just resolves itself. I assumed that my internet connection was acting up and blamed the problem on it rather than on the site though.

I use firefox on both computers, and have had the problem on one for sure. Currently, above the comment box it says “Logged in as .” and then has the “Logout >>” button, but doesn’t list my name. Strange business.

Not checking the remember me button this time, we’ll see if it works. - Sezzy

A few days ago, I was one of the victims of the “Anonymous” bug…I was using Mozilla, and always use the “Remember Me” option (so all my logins and PWs are saved).

However, today it seems to working peachy! (yay!!) So here’s the “cut and paste” info, as requested through the given link….

Hmm… sounds like the “remember me” checkbox isn’t a factor here.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Reports above look like they are from Firefox 2 and 3 (on a PC), as well as Safari (on both a Mac and a PC).
  • The bug doesn’t impact all users of those browsers though, since I can use Firefox 3 at home and work.
  • So far, nobody has reported a case of this bug on any version of Internet Explorer.

Please keep these comments coming; hopefully one of them will give us the clue we need to crack the case!

Hey guys - I believe we may have found the solution. :-)

Please help us test the solution and try commenting again - especially if you commented above or have had this problem in the past!

ps I deleted some comments I made above (along with the replies) about an alternative solution, since that wasn’t working…

But it does look like it’s working now… the past two times i tried to comment, it showed up as anonymous. but above the comment box, it used to say “Logged in as . Logout>>” but now it actually says my username. yay!

@Annui: Firefox is actually based on the code from Netscape. :-)

Netscape open sourced its browser, which became Mozilla… and the Firefox spun off from Mozilla. More riveting reading here:

Hi! The weird thing for me is that this happens SOMETIMES, but not all the time. I use both Safari and Firefox- mostly Safari for wedding bee. I would sign in, and right above the comment box it would say “Logged in as. Logout” So it knew I was signed in, but my log in name wouldn’t show up.
And even more strange, sometimes, I’d be logged in and I’d show up as Anonymous on the main posts, but as BeachBrideT under the boards.
I always check “Remember me” when I sign in (although I tried it both ways when trying to figure out how to get rid of the Anonymous problem.
It looks like its been fixed! :)

@BeachBrideT: Yah, names were showing up on boards… just not on the blog comments (for certain users). It was a bug with the blogging software we’re using - we applied the fix, and all seems better now!
