Never to Fart…

January 5th, 2009 @ 9:23 am by Mrs. Glitter

Sorry for the vulgar post title, but I’m guessing I got your attention!

I want to talk about wedding band engraving, and I can’t help but reference the sometimes forgettable, but kinda cute movie, License to Wed. For those of you unfamiliar with this flick, John Krasinski and Mandy Moore star as a soon-to-be married couple who face all kinds of challenges trying to get “licensed to wed” by their officiant (Robin Williams). There is a small part where John goes to the jeweler to pick up the wedding band he had engraved for Mandy. Upon closer inspection of the finished ring, John notices that instead of engraving his desired phrase, “Never to Part”, the jewelers inscribed, “Never to Fart”. You can view the funny clip here. For some reason, the website wouldn’t let me embed the clip.

Mr. G and I love the idea of engraving our rings. We know couples that have engraved thoughtful and meaningful phrases into their rings: wedding dates, song lyrics, bible verses, private nicknames, and the list goes on. We have grappled with our chosen inscription.

We knew we wanted the same phrase in both rings. We also knew we wanted something that we could admire time and again. At first we thought of inscribing “To Us”, because it’s what we always say to each other when we clink glasses and do a toast when out at dinner alone. Yes, we can be a bit cheesy. :)

But then, one day I was listening to my iPod, and one of our favorite songs came on. The song was Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Like A Star”. I knew right away that I had found our inscription.

I relayed my idea to Mr. G and he instantly loved it. The inside of our rings will be graced with the phrase, “Honor to Love You” with our wedding date. I suppose if we were English like Corinne Bailey Rae, it would read, “Honour to Love You”… but either way, it’s delightful and perfect for our inscription.

Do you plan to engrave a meaningful phrase into your wedding bands? If so, what will you write?

Honestly, I hadn’t thought of engraving our rings…but now may consider it. Just a little something between the two of you - it’s very sweet.

I also love your “To Us” toast. So sweet :)

I think it’s very sweet. We didn’t engrave our rings b/c there was so little room on my ring. But I love your idea. I didn’t know that song, so I looked it up on youtube — it’s great. Thanks for sharing! “Here’s to you…”

We aren’t engraving (as of now anyway). I love your phrase, though!

We wanted to have ours engraved but had so many problems with the purchasing of the rings (they broke one of the diamonds in my band when sizing it and then had trouble with getting the ring to us multiple times among other problems) that we were reluctant to let them out of our sight once everything had been rectified.

I think it is a very sweet idea.

I remember that part in the movie, too! My hubby and I were actually considering having “Never to Part” engraved, so that every time we looked at it, we would remember “Never to Fart” and giggle.

We instead decided to go with “Do it for Love 6.21.08″ which is a line from one of my favorite poems (also part of his proposal), and our wedding date.

We use acronyms all the time so I wanted to engrave MLITMWIATML (my love is to me what I am to my love).

The jeweler who designed his ring doesn’t engrave but sent me some some guy and told me I should only pay about 15-20 bucks.

I thought, “SWEETNESS!”

WRONG!

I get to the place and grumpy guy says, $45. I was sad and went back to the jeweler who admitted there’s no way it should be that much.

How much does this typically cost? Maybe I can do it for Valentines Day.

@Shasha:
My family are full of jewlers and all say that a typical engravement done by a professional store or shop should cost you between $30-80. If your ring is on the small size, expect to pay more. Font styles can also change the price as well as how long the phrase is.

But $45 sounds reasonable. I got a ring recently engraved for about that amount, as well.

LOVE that movie! We were thinking about putting that on our rings as a joke but we are stumped at the moment for what we should really put!

We had Mr. Doctor’s ring engraved with the our initials, the date and a meaningful phrase. Unfortunately, they did it wrong and it has the wrong first initial for me, and the date as 07 1809.

It was engraved in titanium, and can’t be undone. We thought for a little while about making a big stink, but when my Christmas i-pod accidentally was engraved with a typo in spelling my name, we just decided this was our lot in life.

We couldn’t figure out what we wanted, and with all the wedding deadlines we figured it was one we wouldn’t put on us. So, we are thinking of doing it as our first anniversary gift to each other.

Unfortunately for me, we dragged our feet getting my band engraved (which makes me a little sad), but we have Mr. K’s ring engraved- his reads “More Than Everything” 11.3.2007. Since he outgrew his first band within a month or two of the wedding, we put it in both bands. :)

I have always wanted to engrave the phrase “I love thee” ever since I saw it in the Romeo and Juliet flick (bad remake). We never got our rings engraved but I believe it’s never too late!

We did our wedding date which to me just makes it personal … and I had a hard time thinking up a phrase that didn’t seem sappy or reductive, so that’s also why. :)

We did both of our initials on my engagement ring. :) My wedding band will have his name, and his will have mine. Pretty simple!

ps, that clip is too funny!

I love that you are engraving your rings with the same phrase! How lovely! I am engraving I will love you forever in Italian (L’amero per siempre.) as a nod to FH’s Italian heritage and our wedding date 6.27.09.
