About Mrs. Powder Puff

Nickname O Rama

January 5th, 2009 @ 1:53 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

Nicknames are a very common thing in our family. Everyone has them, ranging from cute (Scooter), to inside joke-ish (Ralph Harrison), to funny (Spike and Mitzi). Everyone except me has one.

Can you guess who’s who?

Now, there is a very common version of my name that my parents and others have called me throughout the years, but that doesn’t count. I’ve never had a real nickname that has stuck.

Until now.

Over this Christmas break, my dad resurrected a nickname that he and my family tried to apply to me a couple of years ago… Nibs.

Let me weave you a little tale. When I was almost 2 years old, my brother was born. Naturally, I was curious about the new baby, and would watch my mother while she breast fed him, burped him, cooed at him, etc. I would ask questions, and she would answer them as best she could.

Over months of watching Mama Powder Puff, I decided that I wanted a baby as well, and began to pretend to feed my dolls the same way that my mom would feed my brother. When my parents asked me what I was doing, I explained to them, very seriously, that I was feeding my baby with my… nibbles. If you have any sort of imagination, you can guess what word I was mispronouncing.

This story was forgotten. Locked in the vault. Until recently when it resurfaced, breathed in new life, and inspired my entire family to give me a nickname. And really really make it stick. My brother changed my name in his phone to “Nibs”. My sister texts me and reminds me of it. My mom answers my phone calls with it.

But the grand daddy, the kicker of them all, is that my own father has decided to write me a wedding poem using that blasted nickname! To recite at the reception. In front of people. I am mortified.

Does anyone else have an embarrassing nickname that’s rearing its ugly head at the wedding? Or am I alone in my shame?

How funny! My daughter (around 5 at the time) was watching my sister breastfeed her son, and asked her “Am I gonna get those long things so I can feed my baby when I get bigger?”

I bet they are secretely envious of your nickname of embarrassing provenance…oh that theirs should come with such a tale! At least the embarrassment of it is not obvious without knowing the story (at least to me).

I don’t have an embarrassing nickname however my mother did make up a song for me when I was about 13. She calls it the “Shelley Belly” song. I’m sure if it occurred to her she would gladly stand up and sing all 3 versus in front of God and everybody at the reception. I’m going to make sure it doesn’t occur to her (or anyone else for that matter).

That is so something my family would do- I think I am afraid that they will all show up to the wedding with buttons with my picture on it from when I was 5! They’ve done it before.
As for your fam- you guys are so gorgeous!!

Ha I did the same thing when my sis was born. I don’t really have any bad nicknames but you should find something embarrasing to tell about your dad at the rehersal or something. My uncle had taco bell given to the bridal party because apparently when my cousin was young she told him that she wanted Taco Bell served at her wedding. Of course he remembered.

I’m a lass with many nicknames, and I’ve come to love them all. That story is so cute, I think you should wear your Nibs with pride, yo! :) What a sweet daddy, to write a poem for you… nibs or no nibs.

Such a cute nickname story!
My nickname hasn’t returned for the wedding, but returned about 5 yrs ago when I started working at my father’s company… one of my nicknames growing up was Ali-Oop, which was then shortened to Oop, so he started calling me Oop in the office. Long story short I got him to stop when he asked me not to call him Dad at work - I told him I would if he stopped calling me Oop :)

@Mrs. Avocado: Oh I will. I have no shame when it comes to what I’ll share.

I actually can share the beginning with you. Courtesy of my dad.

I have a daughter named Nibs
She no longer wears bibs.
Jason (Mr. PP) called dibs

That’s all he’s been able to come up with so far. :)
@Miss Peep Toe: Thank you!

Hahaha, I cracked up when I read this… and truthfully I LOVE the nickname Nibs. Even if the story is embarassing it sounds like a super fun nickname to say!

LOL! I don’t have an embarassing nickname (yet, knock on wood) but I do distinctly recall sitting next to my mom on the couch when I was four and she was breastfeeding my new sister, and I would “breastfeed” my cabbage patch doll right alongside her!

I used to use the word “nibbles” too, but I think that’s what my mom told me they were called when I was about 3 years old.

Aww, my brother gets teased every now and then for trying to breast feed his bear when he was four, after watching mom. No one is going to know what Nibs means if he doesn’t explain it.
