About Mrs. Daffodil

Hey Mr. DJ

January 6th, 2009 @ 3:46 pm by Mrs. Daffodil

It takes talent to keep an event moving seamlessly and ensure that guests are entertained at all times!  This post is dedicated to Weddingbee reader thetwoparks, who referred me to our awesome DJ.  I’ll be sharing my thoughts on all our vendors in a post to come, but I wanted to specifically highlight the amazing DJ Tim Coy, who truly deserved his own post! He really did an unbelievable job in keeping our reception flowing and every moment super fun!

To be completely honest, in our initial wedding planning, we had decided we would do an iPod wedding reception and try to get one of our buddies to MC. But then it turned out our MC candidates couldn’t make it to the wedding. As I got deeper into the wedding planning and also had a chance to attend several weddings, I became convinced that an MC/DJ could make or break the reception.

There is a stark difference between weddings that have a great MC and those that don’t. When the MC or DJ is doing their job well, you typically aren’t entirely aware of their presence yet you somehow always know exactly what is going on. When MCs or DJs are noticed, either they are doing an amazing job spinning or entertaining, or more often than not, they aren’t doing their job too well. We have been to all too many weddings where there were uneasy silences, periods of awkward laughter, or lengths of time when guests did not know what was going on. I did not want our wedding to be like that! So, after much deliberation, Mr. D and I did our best to cut costs where we could and try to see if we could find a good DJ who would fit our needs.

After looking for several weeks, we still hadn’t found a DJ that would be willing to work with our budget. We had just about given up when I was given Tim Coy’s name and number. I thought I would give it a try. As soon as he picked up the phone, I could tell that Tim would be great to work with - he sounded very easygoing, on top of things, and plus, he had the perfect DJ voice smiley302. We talked about our needs, what he could do to help us, and before we knew it, the deal was sealed!

Tim quickly sent over an event planning template that helped us immensely in thinking through the flow of our reception. By this time, we were drawing closer to the wedding, so I truly appreciated how organized he was! The template had a list of suggested activities that would take place throughout the reception and asked what songs we wanted when. It also allowed us to specify what announcements to make when, pronunciations of bridal party names, and more. It was very easy to fill out, save for the fact that Mr. D and I took forever deciding what songs we wanted when. But despite our indecisiveness, Tim was super flexible and patient with us. He also made sure to incorporate all of our custom requests with respect to specific songs we wanted in the mix.

On the night of, Tim not only came through but totally surpassed my expectations. Before the grand entrance, he came out to quickly brief me and clarify a couple of details, and then welcomed our bridal party and informed them of what to do. Throughout the evening, he kept the tunes coming, the party moving, and each event - whether it was the toasts, the cake cutting, or the dancing - flowed seamlessly into each other. He was extremely professional and did such an awesome job that even MIL Daffodil, who had been skeptical that a DJ would be worth it, was impressed! The brides-to-be among our wedding guests all asked me afterward for his contact information, as did a groom-to-be!

Thank you, Tim, for making our reception perfect and my dance party dream come true smiley302!

Wow, that DJ does sound fab. If you still have a copy of the planning sheet, could you share it’s contents? (That’s about where we are in the planning process…)

We had a similar situation. We were trying to go as cheap as possible with a DJ, but then none of the ones we called even answered the phone or returned our calls. A considerably more expensive one did respond, and it turns out he was able to work with our budget. And he did a FANTASTIC job and was more than worth it. And like you mentioned after going to a wedding with a crappy DJ, it really made me realize how much of a difference it makes to have a good DJ who can keep things going smoothly. People still tell me how great our reception was and I attribute almost all of that to the great DJ (the other part was my great planning of course!)

@Pixi: @Jellybean77: Hi girls, while I’d love to share his planning guide, since it was his and part of his service that we paid for, I’m afraid I probably shouldn’t! However, if you haven’t checked it out yet, my post I did a few months back on my overall planning packet may be helpful to you! (http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/08/07/the-packet/) I’ll also be doing a follow-on post soon with a template for what I gave some of my other vendors.

Sounds like a marvelous DJ helped your marvelous party! I have a question, how “strict” were you with the play list? Did you have a lot of must-play songs that you gave Tim or did you just let him do his thing?

Can you say who your dj was? We’re still in the market looking for a fantastic DJ and would appreciate teh recommendation.

I was wondering if you had special lighting during the reception, specifically during dancing. If so, would you highly recommend it? If not, do you regret not having the “intelligent lighting” services?

@Tina: Tim had a lighting option in his package, which we did choose to purchase. I thought it added a very nice touch, otherwise the option would have just been to dim the lights!

THANK YOU for the info!! I e-mailed him and he was totally GREAT working with our budget and being so professional and organized. I am definitely feeling great about this one and am looking forward to work with him. His event planner sheet is definitely a PLUS in my “i want you to have/know every detail of what we want and would like” type personality.
