DIY Mantilla Veil

January 8th, 2009 @ 1:16 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

Naturally, as a girl who loves lace, pearls, and all things frilly, I love mantilla veils. I, however, do not love their price tag. By now, I’m sure you all can guess what I did. That’s right, I made my own mantilla veil.

With a lot of help from Sister Spring Roll, we turned this:

Into this:

Sister SR might have killed me if I posted the whole photo (it’s just picture her pretending to drink a bottle of corked wine with her mouth wide open).

Want to give making your own mantilla veil a shot? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A yard or so of tulle (depending on the desired length)
  • Scissors
  • Alencon lace
  • Clear sewing thread
  • A needle
  • 3” clear comb or bobby pins.

First, cut tulle into the desired width and length. We cut the tulle 34 inches wide by 20 inches tall.

Next, carefully sew the lace around the veil edges using clear sewing thread.

Last but not least, using the clear thread, sew the top of your veil to a 3” clear comb. If you do not want to use a clear comb, you can attach the veil to your hair using bobby pins.

What style of veil are you wearing on your big day? Will you attempt to make your own?

Lovely! A modern twist on the mantilla! I’m wearing a birdcage veil for my wedding, but I won’t attempt to make it, since I want to get a nice fascinator for it too. Etsy here I come!

very nice. I bet it was a lot cheaper than buying it in the store… and no one will ever know the difference.

I’ll be wearing a birdcage veil, and I’m making mine too! Largely because I searched high and low with no luck finding one that looked like I wanted with the exception of one from Sara Gabriel (who made Mrs. Cookie’s veil) but $200 is a bit much for something so small in my opinion.
I love the length of your mantilla!
