Mrs. Sea Breeze's Picture
Mrs. Sea Breeze, Vancouver/Dominican Republic Age in 2008 and Occupation: 30, Communications Manager Fiance's Age in 2008 and Occupation: 29, Experiential Marketing Director Engagement Date: October 6, 2007 Wedding Date: November, 2008 Blogging Since: July 17, 2008 Venue: Majestic Colonial Resort, Punta Cana About Me: Planning a destination wedding by the sea should be (oh no she di-in't…) a breeze (…*sigh* yep, she did) but when you've never been to the Caribbean, your powers of imagination are really put to the test. Luckily, I'm 90% resourceful, creative optimist (and kooky, neurotic practicalist-if-that's-a-word for the other ten). Other than writing about our week-long celebration of family, friends, laughter and love, I adore books, shoes and… you guessed it… long walks on the beach.
About Mrs. Sea Breeze

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a month and a half since we left Canada for two supremely amazing wedding weeks in Punta Cana. We have finally settled down into a comfortable groove again and though our tans have faded, the memories we made never will. You know what that means: It’s finally time to recap the Breezys’ Destination Wedding in the Dominican Republic, a.k.a. DW in the DR.

Punta Cana, here we come!

It will probably come as no surprise that the last few days before our departure were HECTIC. I actually fully expected to tear my hair out because I just knew there were so many things that wouldn’t fall into place before the very last minute (isn’t that always the case?), but the situation was worse than even I had imagined.

As (bad) luck would have it, Mr Breezy was launching a big campaign at work right before we left which meant he had to pull some looooong hours at the office and so I was largely on my own. Three days before our flight, somewhere in between me running around town getting last minute things and hyperventilating into a brown paper bag, Mr Breezy basically opened the door to the guest room (our designated Wedding Disaster Area), threw a bunch of clothes in there and said, “Good luck, honey. Don’t forget to pack anything.” Considering I had not only our own stuff to pack but also OOT bags and contents for 60 guests, this was no small feat.
I think my favorite part of this experience was just before Mr Breezy checked out of the packing process.

He was standing there contemplating the ginormous pile of crap that we somehow had to magically cram into 3 luggage pieces and he stroked his chin and said earnestly, “You know, I think if you put that stuff in there, you’ll be able to fit your wedding dress right in the top of that large suitcase.”

To which I replied (once I had found my voice, that is), “Um… what? I ain’t stuffing my wedding dress in no freakin’ suitcase Mr Breezy thankyouverymuch… have you completely LOSTYOURMIND?!?” Pretty funny, right? In hindsight, anyway.

Somehow, everything got stuffed in–minus the dress, which I draped over my arm–and we found ourselves at the airport. For the record, my shoes and veil also escaped being smushed into our bags and instead were gingerly tucked into my carry-on bag… ’cause hey, if our luggage got lost, I figured the show could go on with those essential items at hand.

Did you almost lose your mind packing up all your wedding stuff before the big day? If you’re also a DW bride, how do you plan on schlepping all your wedding stuff to your destination?

ech- this is what I’ve been dreading. I’ve got to pack for a Colorado wedding (boots, sweaters, etc) and we’re leaving for our Mexico honeymoon from colorado. No idea how I’m going to fit it all in, so I may end up leaving some winter clothes at home so I don’t have to schlep them around Mexico. Welcome back and can’t wait to hear more!

OMG. We did this - shlepping tons of crap for our destination wedding in Ottawa (we live in Calgary). I had a packing list done up weeks before the wedding which helped so much. We also had it easier than a “real” desination wedding - we were able to buy things like our OOT items, favours and some boxes to carry around stuff - but it was still a nightmare managing all of our crap!

@Miss Champagne: Ooh, winter stuff is even worse, it’s so bulky! You definitely have to leave the winter stuff behind for Mexico; maybe give it to someone else to take home!

@linzerella: A packing list is awesome if you’re not a moron like me and write general words like “makeup” then proceed to forget crucial items of said makeup. D’oh!

Yay, I’ve been eagerly awaiting your recaps! Can’t wait to see pictures.
And I’m going through that packing process right now…we just mailed four boxes of reception decor to Key West for our wedding in two weeks. Our caterer will hold onto them until we get there…that is a lifesaver.

Oh boy! My wedding is semi-destination. Its about 2 hours away. What scares me is that we are driving, so “technically” I will be able to cram as much stuff as possible into my car (and my parents’ car). I tend to overpack, so this could turn into to a big chaotic problem of bringing way too much!

Ugh - I COMPLETELY feel you. We were both completely smashed by our workloads prior to the wedding and honeymoon. (We had a two week break between the two). “Getting ready” for our three-week, international trip translated as: working 10 hours the day before our flight, picking up whatever we needed and didn’t have on our way home, and packing until 1:30 am. Our airport taxi arrived at 3:00 am. It. Was. Awesome.

We both agree that our work schedules seriously cut back our enjoyment of the wedding (we barely got to see our visiting friends and family, much less do any fun “I’m getting married” extras) - and it was really stressful before the honeymoon. I know that the moment we got to our hotel, it was all forgotten. It sounds like you made it through just fine too! Looking forward to the rest of your recaps!

I haven’t planned how we’re going to pack everything for our DW in Maui! I’ll have to start making a list! I can’t wait for your recap.
