Every Table Tells a Story

{Guest Photo}

Instead of using traditional table numbers, we named each table after a place that we had visited together. Each table included the location, name, and description of the place (when we went, what we did there, etc.) on one side, and a picture of us in that place on the other.

This was a very simple DIY project that added a personal touch to our reception. It was a great conversation piece for our guests and we received quite a few compliments on it. As an added bonus it was also a very inexpensive project.

style=”text-align: left;”>The materials included:

- Three sheets of cardstock
- Six 5″x7″ photos
- Gold photo corners
- Home printer (Canon MX310)
- Photo stands

We printed the text on one side of the card using our home printer. On the opposite side I placed the photos in the center using gold photo corners that I had on hand. You could always just glue or tape them down. I looked online and in craft stores for photo stands but I couldn’t find any that were simple and cheap. I asked our florist if she had any we could use and she generously let us borrow the six table stands at no extra cost. As with all projects, be sure to have several people proof-read the text. After printing the first two, Mr. PN noticed that I was going back and forth between the first person and the third person.

We tried to keep the descriptions short and funny. I have to credit Mr. PN for writing most of these. His stories and writing were much funnier than my initial attempts.

Rockefeller Center
Mr. PN proposed while ice skating at Rockefeller Center in November 2007. They had decided to do something very “touristy New York” to celebrate their first day living in the city. They were skating around the rink and then they stopped to take a picture (but the camera batteries were dead!). Then, out of nowhere, Mr. PN hugged Mrs. PN tight, told her he loved her, and asked if she would marry him. Her response of course was, “Are you serious?” He asked again and she replied with an emphatic, “YES!”

The Bronx
Mrs. PN & Mr. PN are regular visitors to The Bronx for baseball and cannoli. As avid Yankees fans they are always cramming onto the 4 train to catch a game at Yankee Stadium. This picture was taken in 2007 when Mrs. PN and Mr. PN drove to New York from Washington DC for Game 3 of the American League Division playoffs. In addition to going to Yankee Stadium they also visited the Arthur Avenue Section of The Bronx for New York City’s best cannoli! They both recommend that if you have the time. The Bronx is the unsung borough of New York City but if you go, bring a bullet proof vest. Only kidding, sort of.

Los Barriles
Mrs. PN & Mr. PN spent four days on the sandy beaches in Los Barriles, Mexico. An hour north of Los Cabos, this fishing village offers a lovely respite from drunken tourists, NFL Quarterbacks, and Mexican Banditos. The fabulous trip was to witness Mr. PN’s brother Grant marry his sweetheart, Chloe, during a breathtaking sunset ceremony on the beach. However, this trip will be remembered for Mrs. PN’s near death experience in the Sea of Cortez. After a sting ray came too close for comfort (35 feet) while snorkeling, Mrs. PN swam frantically for the shore trying desperately to avoid the fate of Steve Irwin. It is important to note that unless provoked, sting rays are a largely peaceful sea creature.

Lake Superior
Mrs. PN was raised on the shores of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota (aka Southern Canada). Mrs. PN & Mr. PN return often to visit family and enjoy everything that the region has to offer. During the winter months (September through May) they enjoy adventurous off-trail snow shoeing in the woods behind her family home. As an added bonus, this allows Sam to imagine what the North Pole is like without ever having to go there.

Coney Island
In 2008, Mrs. PN & Mr. PN visited Coney Island to witness the world-famous Nathan’s International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. While waiting for the contest to begin they explored the dilapidated board walk and rode the rusted Wonder Wheel (which supposedly hasn’t had an accident in 85 years – YEAH RIGHT!). Mrs. PN & Mr. PN saw history-in-the-making as the contest ended in a 59 hot dog tie. Joey Chestnut prevailed by winning a five-dog “eat off” held immediately after the contest. Regardless, this is a piece of Americana that Mrs. PN & Mr. PN will file under, “been there, done that,” at least until they bulldoze and rebuild the whole place.

Bermuda
Mrs. PN & Mr. PN made their first “international trip” to Bermuda in April 2007. They explored pink beaches, relaxed in the sun and spent an afternoon scuba diving in the Atlantic Ocean. The scuba trip revealed many sea creatures including colorful fish and eels! As evidenced in the photo, Mrs. PN wasn’t too comfortable at the bottom of the ocean. The eyes never lie! Not pictured here is Mr. PN in his Bermuda shorts, knee socks and jacket and tie. It was a sight to see Mr. PN dressed like a local when they went out to dinner, however, his wedding outfit will help you approximate the overall look.

How are you planning to name/number your tables at the reception?

We plan to do something similar — We are going to name the tables with song names — and then on the back we will write our favorite line from the song, why it’s important to us and when the song was/will be played throughout the night. We are also going to attempt to connect the songs to the guests at the particular table — like the sweetheart table will be our first dance song, my parents table name will be our father/daughter dance. It is a bit of a project but we have a while and already have 1/2 the information ready to go! Looks great Mrs PN!

We swiped a MS Weddings idea of taking photos of architectural numbers, and made it our own by photographing numbers around us. The house number, our license plates (current and former), volumes of encyclopedias, all sorts of stuff.

I like you even more now that I know you are a Yankee Fan!!!

One of my friends did this at her wedding. I like the fact that you guys added information about the places and what you did there.

West Coast bride

Cute! We were originally going to do some variation on this, but then West Coast Groom had the great idea that since we’re doing a honeymoon registry for our wedding, and our honeymoon will take us to 9 or 10 different destination cities in Europe, we may as well use those as our table names. It won’t have the interactive, information value of yours, but it was the starting point of a what I am mildly referring to as our theme for decor.

I’m planning to do something similar with the mass of self-portraits we’ve taken - it’s such a fun idea! We’ll be adding a twist by making a game out of guessing where we are when the photo was taken! :)

@Nicole R.J.: I love that idea of having guest’s guess where the picture is taken!

@Mochacoca: Go Yankees! Did you see my post a few days ago about Bob Sheppard?

This is such a great idea! And yay being a Yankees fan. Unfortunately the fiance and I are not very photogenic so we don’t have good pictures in the limited places we have been. Still love your idea though!

PS I just went to David’s Bridal and fell in love with the dress you wore for your wedding!

We did the same exact thing!! Only since we live in Vegas but had our wedding back home in Ohio, we decided to incorporate everything Vegas into our table names. We named them after a lot of the hotels as well as the surrounding places such as the Hoover Dam and Mt. Charleston. We also used 5′7 pics (only in frames) and let the guests take them home as favors (if they wanted to). They were a huge hit! Great minds think alike! :^) They looked great!

@Mrs. Bee: And it’s a guest photo! Cool huh?!

@Mrs. Sea Breeze: We did keep them for our guest book :) That is my next big project…

@reanerbean: I really loved that dress! I donated mine to Brides Against Breast Cancer so someone else can love it too :)

We had photos of us at that age for each table number. The funniest was for both of us at Table 2, the photos were of us at about two and both of us were sitting on those old school wooden potty seat things. Sadly, some of our guests decided to snatch up our table numbers so we don’t have all of them.

This is such a fun way for guests to get to know a little bit more about your relationship! I’m a huge fan of doing things at the wedding that incorporate the past. I still love love love hearing about your proposal!

Being a biology geek, we used local plants for each table (blackberry, trillium, cedar, etc). But to take it to the next level, I put only the _scientific name_ on the name cards. (The scientific name was also in smaller print on the table cards, under the common name of the plant). It was a hoot watching guests figure it out and talk about it. It was a great ice breaker. My brother roasted me about it during his toast. :)
