Interviewing Photographers

January 8th, 2009 @ 6:28 pm by Words of Wisdom

Remember this feature? :)

Weddingbee reader Catty posted the following question on the boards, and we thought it was a great way to bring Words of Wisdom back!

I’m meeting with potential photographers tomorrow and Saturday and I was wondering if anyone had a check list or set of interview type questions they used.  What should we be looking for?  What questions need to be asked?

Please provide your best words of wisdom below when it comes to interviewing photographers!

When we interviewed ours, we had some questions to start with, just to get comfortable. Why did you get into photography?
What kind of camera do you use (I found that, if a photog said something like, “you wouldn’t understand” or “that really doesn’t matter” — I didn’t want to work with them — mostly because it’s such a simple, fact-based question)?
Will you work with my list of “required” photos (some prefer to do their own thing — if family shots are important, this could be an important element for you)?
How do you get your great shots (I find that a photographer who just “hangs back” and waits to see what happens misses many of the good shots)?
And… most importantly: Do we get copyrights to our photos? Please make sure to ask this, to avoid having to shell out a bundle to get copies of your photos. Many photographers today offer a disc of your images as part of the package. This disc can go to Target, Shutterfly, where ever to print your photos!

Good luck!

I’ve got a great list of questions you should print off before visiting your potential wedding photographer.

Thanks,

I second the equipment question. Find out what kind of camera they use (digital or film being key here, as well as how they treat you when you ask) and also if they use any other equipment: flash, other external lighting, a second camera, etc.

Ask if a second shooter is included or if they will have an assistant (also important if you will be serving a meal to your vendors!)

Ask about post-processing. That’s how you get the really cool effects of color-treatment, perfectly balanced black & white shots, etc. Photoshop is the industry standard. Also see if you can find out how long they’ve been editing in the software.

And last but not least–if you splurge on ANYTHING for your wedding, let this be it. You, your children, and your children’s children will have these forever, so don’t go with a lesser quality photog just because it will save you a few hundred bucks.

Good luck!

Here’s another article on what to look for and what to ask:

I am always pleased when clients have a lot of questions prepared. The process of establishing a raport and working relationship is much easier for both when the customers needs are well defined.

You could probably also find out how long the photographer promises to keep your images backed up and if he/she makes a change to find them again in 5 years time - I have heard of photogs doing this.

On top of what everyone else already suggested, I would ask if a CD or DVD is included with your package. If so, are they hi-resolution? You’d be surprised how many photographers say they’ll give you a CD of you images, only for it to turn out they aren’t good enough quality to print. You want your images to be at least an 8×10 at 300dpi. You’ll also need a release form from your photographer to be able to print your images.

Like many of the girls said- make sure you understand the photographer’s services [examples: is DVD of full resolution images provided, if not, what size of images will you get on the DVD, what kind of post processing the photographer does{minimal or a lot of it}, what's his/her style. Talk about pricing and structure]-if something is unclear to you don’t be afraid to ask.

Talk about you vision of the wedding, your style, tell them what’s important to you during the day.

Most likely within first 5 minutes of the meeting you’ll know if the photographer might be right for you, if not - don’t be afraid to cut it short…if they are up your valley- don’t be afraid to go over EVERY single basis that will help you decide.

Also, good to have things written down but try not to print those generic internet questions word for word. Not that they’re bad, they’re awesome to give you ideas of what to ask, so make it your own, make it about you!

Hope that helps.

I will say go with your gut on your photographer. I kept giving mine the benefit of the doubt and got majorly screwed. Also, make sure you include a CD of the pictures in your package and not just proofs!!

I think a lot of brides forget to ask how many of their images will be “processed”. Almost every image you see on your photographers blog and website will have been heavily processed using photoshop (I admit that some photographers do not do any processing at all, but I feel it is rare) and you need to realize that all 1000 images you get back are not going to look like that.

Make sure you ask, and maybe even get in writing, how many images are going to have “fine art processing”. This is why you ask to so an example of a full wedding, because this gives you a much better idea of what you will be getting back.

@Miss Sushi: That is an excellent thing to ask, I came across that question this week and would never have thought to ask it before.

Do they have issues with guests taking pictures in addition to the photogs? Some like being the ONLY one taking pics.

What happens in a case of an emergency on their end (funeral, car accident…) and they are unable to shoot?

For me, there were 3 biggies:

1) How long will you be there?
2) Do I get a copy of the HIGH-RES files and a print release?
3) How much post-processing (think of this as the “digital darkroom” — they are digitally developing your photos) is included?

Miss Avocado is right — all images you see in their portfolio have been processed. They do not look like that coming straight out of the camera. A good photographer will include the processing/digital darkroom part in their price, because it’s both good for you AND good for them, since it means that you see the photo they way they intended.

I’m curious about why brides are interested in what type of camera a photographer uses? I can’t think of any service provider I’ve ever hired where I asked about their equipment. I’m not trying to be funny, but if you like their work & are confident they are the ones who produced it, why would it matter what they used? It’s also possible that the answer to that question could be different by the time your wedding comes. It’s also not a good indicator of professionalism since they’re available to anyone with a credit card. What am I missing?
