Sweet Swap

January 8th, 2009 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Taffy

When I first blogged about my fitness situation, I was feeling quite confident that the exercise I was doing would be enough and that I would not have to alter my diet. Well, that was before the holidays, and now all of the delicious food and desserts that I scarfed down are catching up with me! Since our wedding is now 5 months away, I am starting to freak out a bit. Okay, a lot.

I have an enormous sweet tooth (Miss Taffy, indeed!) and a serious love for ice cream. This is not helpful! I am finally deciding to make some alterations in order to keep some sweet stuff in my diet. A “this versus that” game, if you will.

I would love to eat this:

My favorite ice cream of all time, Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream. So yummy, it should be illegal.

Instead of eating this, I could eat a similar flavor from a brand like Breyer’s or Premium Homemade. These brands don’t use all of that heavy cream, which cuts the fat content down by half, sometimes even a third! I actually prefer the lighter consistency of these brands.

Or even better, I could have one of these two things:

Fudgsicles are great because the portion is much smaller than an ice cream cone, and sorbet is just amazing. I love pretty much any flavor! I am also in love with the mango frozen fruit pops at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

As for my candy addiction, I’m going to try to eat fresh fruit instead. When I sit down and think about it, I like fresh fruit way more than candy, so it should work out. (Yes, Mr. Taffy, you read that correctly!) ;)

Have you tried substitutes for your favorite food indulgences? Did you stick to them?

I’ve given up ice cream for the past month, but I did have a custard once & a fancy coffee drink once over the holidays (with ice cream in it)…it’s been hard, but the weight it slowly coming off. Sometimes Yoplait or even Trident gum takes the edge off for me, too. I only have a month left to go, eeps! Good luck!

I find that if I question why I really want to eat something, like ice cream, and think about its potential impacts, that I end up going for the right thing, Fruit or Veggies. Now that I have been doing this for months I discover I really don’t crave junk food but do crave good food.

Do what works for you, but start small and slowly get rid of all the tempation foods :)

Good Luck!

Why, why on earth would you post such a delicious picture of ice cream knowing most of us are on a diet! :)
For ice cream fanatics, Weight Watchers ice cream snacks and the Slim-A-Bear ice cream snacks are great, lower-calorie/fat substitutes that I really like.

I am in the same boat Mrs. Taffy! UGH. I am having the hardest time giving up sweets. They are truly my addiction! I do instead of Ice Cream eat sorbet and well I feel in love. So that has been easier. But I still can’t back away from the brownies, kit kats or anything else that involves A LOT of sugar. UGH. One day at a time!

I too love LOVE sweets. Here is another tip: Skinny Cow makes icecream treats (I like the fudgsicles or icecream sandwiches best) that are lower cal AND have added fiber. If you’ve ever done a weight watchers type program, fiber offsets the calories to some extent based on how hard it makes it to digest. They are good, consistancy is more like froyo in the ice cream but definitely a sweet fix.

try having a HOT CHOCOLATE! for 120 calories it is extremely satisfying (made with water). I like to have that with a small <100 calorie sweet on the side, like a few strawberries or a lindt truffle (80 cals0 or something like that. it is so decadent for <200 calories that I don’t even want anything else sweet after.

Frozen yogurt…I had Golden Spoon twice a day for year (in addition to full meals) and 20 pounds just melted off. 68 calories! Just stay away from toppings.

I have a major sweet tooth too! In fact, I just had some chocolate icecream. Yes, my wedding is 4 months away, but I have a sore throat so it was totally justified (right!?!?!?!)! ;)

I’ve found that pineapple and grapes are a great fruit to substitute for candy. Pineapple is so tasty so I’ve found that it really satisfies any craving I might be having. And grapes, once washed and stored in the fridge, are super convenient. Just as convenient as removing the paper from a candy bar!! :)

I LOVE THOSE FUDGESICLES. Have you tried the multi-pack with white chocolate and dark chocolate too?

Also, this seems kind of weird, but if you’re a tea person like me then a cup of tea after a meal sort of gets me through that immediate “I just had something savory so now I must have something sweet” phase. Kinda resets your tastebuds. Doesn’t always work, but that’s where the fudgesicles come in.

I totally feel your pain! I’ve had a struggle, ok, more like a total body war with ice cream my whole life! Lately though, I’ve been having success with Mott’s Healthy Harvest Blueberry Delight applesauce, it’s no sugar added & has only 50 calories per serving (plus it comes in a convenient pre-packaged container). They also have a couple different flavors if blueberries aren’t your thing.

To REALLY satisfy my cravings, I have discovered gelato. It’s just like ice cream, only made with skim or 2% milk, so calories are slashed up to 1/3 the calories of normal ice cream. They also make some flavors with water only, so they have a variety of sorbets (even chocolate) too!

Way to go Miss Taffy! I’ve been very good about controling my sweets intake after our conversation the other day. It’s hard but feeling healthy is even better. We can do it!

i have some wierd gene where i dont crave or ice cream that much, but after seeing that first picture of Ben & Jerry’s Americone Dream I want to run out and buy some.

I guess, my motto is don’t deprive yourself, it’s simply mindboggling to me, just remember portion control and you will be fine. I have lost 50 pounds with portion control & regular cardio/abs/weight training.

Popscicle makes a collection called Healthy Bunch that has Popsicles, Fudgsicles and Creamsicle pops. It’s sooo good and not many calories!

I’ve found that 2 bites of Americone Dream can satisfy my sweet tooth just as well as a bowl (i.e 20+ bites).

I think it’s because your taste buds are a. not as receptive to repetitions of the same taste and b. they’re cold — and numbed.

Sooo… fewer calories and no post-substitution cravings. Win!

I love skinny cow too! I use frozen fruit and fat free vanilla yogurt (regular yogurt, not frozen yogurt) to make parfaits… and if you want to really indulge have a square of dark chocolate grated on top. Seriously, I forget that I’m eating regular yogurt sometimes… and the calcium is good for you.

@cannotwait: Gum and yogurt are great ideas! Good luck with the next month!

@SpaceC06: Thanks! It is crazy how often I have to remind myself that veggies are good as a snack- I always think of them as dinner material.

@Emily: @Mrs. Emerald: @MightySapphire: @Mrs. Green Tea: I know, I should have known better than to post such a tempting photo! Sorry ladies. I am still fighting the urge as I type!

@Firefighter_Prazs_Girl: Thank goodness for sorbet! Try switching the kit kats for some fresh fruit, it does work really well for me. :)

@RobinBananas: Thanks for the tip! I have seen skinny cow products but haven’t tried them yet. :)

@rhodeygirl: oooh, that does sound good. It probably wouldn’t hurt to throw some marshmallows in either… ;)

@trinny: I love frozen yogurt! Fresh fruit would probably be a safe topping, as long as it wasn’t syrupy.

@BeachBrideT: lol, sore throats absolutely need frozen treats! Before my tonsils came out, I was constantly eating frozen treats to ease the pain. Hope it feels better!

@BostonBride: No, I haven’t seen them, but I will look! Mr. Taffy doesn’t get the savory then sweet taste trigger, but the moment I finish a meal I crave sugar!

@finallytowed: Applesauce sounds good!

@Taffette Miss S: Yay! I just had an apple instead of the Americone ice cream. Yes, I am stupid enough to post about it when it is sitting in my freezer! The pain…

@beaninca: I agree! That’s why I’ll try to have the sorbet instead of the ice cream, because when it comes down to it I like it just as much. I’m glad to hear that you have been able to stick to your goals, it is inspiring. :)

@Miss Champagne: I love creamsicles! I’ll have too check it out. :)

@Kenzie: I don’t think I have that much self control, you are awesome!!! I’ll try it though. :)

@renaissancetrophywife: Parfaits sound really good! And yes, calcium is essential. ;)

One more recent discovery - if you’re like me, and probably aren’t getting enough calcium, then try those chocolate calcium chews. They’re 30 calories, but taste like a tootsie roll, and get you 50% of your calcium for the day. I don’t eat mine at the same time every day, instead, I go for one when I want something sweet.

I too have a sweet tooth and would have ice cream almost every night. Now that my wedding is drawing near, I’ve switched to making my own smoothies instead. I blend frozen strawberries, yogurt, honey, and ice. It’s really good and is much lower in calories than the ice cream.

I have a weakness for ice cream too! I also love sorbet, but if you want to kick the craving with something that isn’t horrible for you and tastes better than the regular stuff, you need to try Weight Watchers fudge bars!! They are INCREDIBLE and only 1 point/90 calories! Healthy Choice Mocha Swirl bars are fantastic too and I think that they are also 90 calories! They are a little more $$ than some of the other fudgesicles, but well worth it!

We bought an ice cream maker when Linen N’ Things was going out of business and we LOVE it. I throw frozen fruit, fat free yogurt, fat free milk, some agave nectar, and some vanilla extract in the blender and mix it all up in the ice cream maker and the results are amazing!

Just an idea for something to add to your registry :)
