Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, nonprofit communications Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!

Let’s Play… Name That Theme!

January 9th, 2009 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. D'orsay

Many of you brought up a good point during the centerpiece election

It’s hard to vote when you don’t know the theme, I mean, really, what platforms are those centerpieces running on anyway? I’m sorry to say, and I know I’m being really bad when I say this but… we don’t really have a theme. We’ve just sort of picked what we liked. So far things have been vintage, found, recycled, re-purposed, modern, feathered, and eclectic. When pushed by Mom D’orsay, I told her our theme was “the Great Gatsby goes camping sans tragedy”. Yup—I don’t know what that really means either.

I always thought themes belonged in books and plays. I thought that if they were to belong to an event it would be to a high school prom—I thought “Under the Sea”. Then I realized that our wedding is a bit like a story, or really, it’s part of our story. Which is unexpected, caring, international, and silly (I tried to limit myself to 4 words).

Thus you, my mother, Mr. D’orsay, and that annoying voice in my head have walked me over to the place where we must choose a theme. Instead of finding a theme, I made an inspiration board. Be kind, it’s only my second one ever:

So, what is our theme and can you give it a name? What about you? What are your themes?

that brought to mind “whimsical” or “rustic fairytale” not that that actually helps!

I would say eclectic vintage. It does look very nice and inviting though!

I might call it something like… A modern fairy tale romance. I love it because it’s very whimsical but real… with a splash of hollywood glamour. Even though you may not be able to give it a solid name, everything flows together really well. Beautiful job!

vintage glam goes green/eco-friendly?

Looks to me like A Mid Summer Night’s Dream, how if I were to produce that play, this is what I would do. And wow, that purple bouquet really jumps out at me. :-)

I’m having a hard time with theme too. Actually I plan to write a post about it in the next two weeks. So far I’ve come up with Formal, Classic, Glam. I’m spending a lot on lighting, the decorations will be mostly jewel styled, the process has pretty much been traditionally by the book, and having a seated dinner in the evening was most important.

But I must admit, this whole theme thing has proven to be the most difficult decision yet.

Don’t worry about it! We didn’t have a “theme” or “colors.” We used a color pallet that worked with the style and colors of our venue, and like you, just chose things we liked. It works. Our guests - well our female guests ;) - kept commenting on how everything seemed so coordinated. (Inspiration boards are helpful).

That said, maybe you could call it “Eco-Glamour”

BTW, I voted for the other centerpiece option - but now that I see it all together in the inspiration board, I think you made the right choice.

I would say whatever the “theme” may be…it looks very romantic…and no matter what it will be the best day for you and him!

@Amanda71109: Hi Amanda! I searched and searched though the bride’s cafe and I couldn’t find it. The closest I could find is the original polyvore link which has a larger image.

Thanks for the help! It is surprisingly hard to pin down a name!

I ended up with something similar as we. I didn’t really have colors. I didn’t really have a theme. I just picked what i liked and used it. Also sometimes I picked what was cheap. That was helpful too :)

I was going to say natural eleagance or the eleagance of nature since you have rich colors with natural elements of the plants and deep woodsy colors.

Great inspiration board! We have the same wedding colors, my theme is rustic but not dirty, french country, vineyard. It’s basically just for people who actually care about themes, but mostly descriptive words so people can get a rough idea of where my tastes are in regards to my wedding, I mean you know how you want it to look, and it may be quite a few different themes in one but it’s what you envision and you know it is going to look lovely all put together period.
