What Type of Bride Are You?

January 11th, 2009 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Glitter

A few weeks ago, I was Facebook stalking when I noticed one of my friends posted pictures of a recent wedding she had attended. I decided to peruse her pictures as any good Facebook stalker would do. There was my friend, smiling happily with her arm around the beaming bride. And there was the bride in her dress enjoying the day…with her entire cleavage hanging out. We’re not talking about a little peek-a-boo. Her boobs were just sorta chillin’…like maybe they needed their own seat at the reception table.

Surprised as I was (and trying not to judge, but failing miserably), I also realized that every bride has their own style and fashion sense. Often times, the dress inspires the flowers, the groom’s attire, and the ceremony/reception details. So just for fun, I decided to outline some of the style categories for wedding dresses. Which category do you fit most with? Or perhaps your dress is just too fabulous to fit any of these categories… in which case, let me know and I’ll make a new category! :)

Traditional: A-line, off the shoulder, pretty.

Modern
: Simple, sleek with a little edge

Romantic: flowing, flowery and impractical (hey, no one said romance was practical!)

romantic_dress

Vintage Inspired: halter, delicate details and “must have” hairdo.

Vera Wang: Vera Wang.

My dress Joelle (Maggie Sottero)
can considered traditional with a twist with an asymmetrical waistline :)

The first dress is Alfred Angelo 1148 - a fabulous dress for around $600! It has a corset back and fits like a dream. And Alfred Angelo is nice enough to size their wedding dresses so that they do match your street size (at least mine did). Funny, I didn’t really think of it as traditional - and my mom certainly didn’t. In her mind, no-lace-no-beading-no-crinoline was absolutely not traditional!

Haha when I read the first couple lines of your post, I figured you must be talking about me, but I have no idea where I’d know you from… but yes, my (huge) chest was on display. In all reality, I just couldn’t find a flattering dress that covered everything up, so I embraced the bewbies and went for it - much like a “Marie Antoinette” gown where they’re smashed in and up. But I do still wonder if it was me in the pictures you saw.

I had to check “other” because I’m not 100% sure what my gown is! Different people have said it’s traditional, romantic, and vintage-inspired! Here is a pic:

I chose “other” because I felt like I was a mix between modern & vintage inspired. My dress was modern & sleek, but I had some little vintage details goin’ on.

I’m other because I’m not wearing a white wedding dress. Mine is black with white polka dots and I LOVE it… She’s so much more “me” than any white dress I could find! Plus, our wedding is informal and in the woods, so I went with an above the knee dress so it doesn’t get dirty or stepped on.

@Meghan: Casablanca and Alfred Angelo both have dresses similar to that style.

I can’t seem to put my gown in any of those categories.

Well, I never would have called myself traditional, but I fit right into that first dress… literally!

I voted vintage inspired, but that first dress is high on my wish list, so I guess I’m vintage/traditional. Mainly because I have no desire to be a bride like who you described. I’m a DD cup and have no desire to flash the family.

I love how Vera has her own category. It reminds me of that quote from Bride Wars, “You don’t alter Vera Wang- you alter yourself to fit Vera”. So true!

My dress turned into a cleavage dress, which is certainly not my style. Remember, if you are having alterations done, you won’t know what your dress looks like on top until right before the wedding. Plus, the dress might look fine in a standing straight pose, but change drastically once you start moving around….

As someone with a 36 DD chest, let me assure you that depending on the volume of your cleavage, it can be difficult for breasts NOT to be on display in a gown. Sometimes you just have to embrace what you’ve got and run with it! :)

While I fit squarely into the romantic bride, I’d also like to add “Glam” and “Rebel” as categories.

Can you add another category? My gown is traditional with a modern twist. It has a bit of color (pool) added to it to make it especially mine. It’s an Alfred Angelo with a band and long beaded ribbons in the back!

great post!! i hear you! i’m a strong vintage inspired Vera Wang. My dress is a slim, gauzy, Vera sheath which is both modern and vintage at once, but the other elements, including the finger waved hair, mantilla veil, and authentic 1930’s deco earrings are alllll vintage! so it was hard to vote! :)

Ha! That Alfred Angelo is in the top running for me right now. And I wear a 34G. Which they say is like a 34DDDD. Yes, four Ds. Sigh. But the nice ladies at the store are going to pull it in a little to make it a smidge more mermaidy and add some sparkle to the shoulder straps. I might add a “privacy panel” in case it doesn’t cover enough at the top. I mean, my grandfather is going to be at this wedding! He doesn’t need to see all that!

That’s a pretty cool quiz! Sometimes you think you belong in one category and than you find you are another.

I went with vintage, though mine is more of a different era of vintage, however I would add earthy ? Princess? Casual?

I love the photo you chose for the “romantic” yet not-so-practical dress. It is super sexy.
My dress is fitted to the body as well. I would describe it as modern…no beading or lace, just light ivory satin draped asymmetrically to one hip, subtle sweetheart neckline ( no showing the kids off while my dad is walking me down the ailse… awkward). Let me tell you though, it was not easy finding a dress that covers up a fuller bust…but i was determined to find a dress that gave me proper coverage but was still sexy… I must’ve tried on 25 or more… ughhh… but i am so happy I found the perfect one!

I went with other because I think I fit more in the Glam category. My dress is dramatic with vintage details and it’s totally impractical but it’s not at all flowery, (like the romantic), it’s more “sophisticated”.

I guess my dress is modern, but I did try on and love the alfred angelo “traditional” at the top. Very flattering. I also LOVED a couple mermaid shaped dresses I tried on, including one a lot like the “romantic” above. WOW! But in the end I thought it was a little too voluptuous for my wedding day. I seem to share your sentiments on looking too sexy at the wedding… I just don’t really want or need to push my girls in my grandma’s face.

I had to click “other” because though my dress was modern, it was probably outside what most would consider traditionally modern…what can I say, I’m a proud Wai-Ching bride :D

I’m a casual bride! I found my dress on the wedding section of nordstrom.com and ended up getting it on ebay. It is matte jersey and perfectly casual. :)

Ladies, I definitely omitted a few popular categories. For one, the princess/poufy/ballgown dress. Another is the mermaid silhouette. Both are very “bridal” and also very flattering on certain body types.

I’m loving the responses on this post! Clearly, many of you are inspired by your own personal style and are stickin’ to it for the big day!

The top gown is my dress! I wore it for my October 12th wedding and it was a big hit with DH and all the guests. It photographs great too.

Best thing about it is the corset style back. That allows you to purchse and lose or gain weight (I lost 20 pounds- whoops!) without have huge alteration costs.

I got married a while ago. I wore a vintage inspired dress, skimmed my heels inthe back. It looked like it was from 1910. It was ecru instead of whiye. I wore a huge hat from the same era.
Very unique.

who is the designer of the “romantic” dress? it’s a lovely pic.

i guess i fall into the romantic category since i just can’t get enough of floral applique dresses. i love the texture they create in pictures. so lovely! that’s why i went with the watters torreon. :) yay.

oh, and for the big busted brides (BBB’s!) who commented above, i did not want to be showing cleavage in my dress so i had an extra 2 inches added to the top of my dress all the way around. watters actually proportionally altered the top of the dress when they made it so it wouldn’t look like extra material was just added on.

i am tall too so dresses were always coming up short on me and i was popping out of every dress i tried on. not the look i wanted! :)

loved this vote! thanks for creating.
