Buff Bride In the Making

January 12th, 2009 @ 12:39 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

I have never been the type of girl to enjoy exercise. I don’t like to sweat, and I prefer curling up with a good book rather than going for a run. The only times I usually “work out” are when I go dancing with my friends, or when I walk from the train to work (and in Chicago, that’s a must).

Typical. Relaxing with my golden retriever puppy.

For most of my life, I’ve gotten away with this. My weight doesn’t fluctuate much, and I’ve stayed pretty much the same size since college. It’s my general belief that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I loved the way I looked, and I saw no need to change anything about myself. That is, until I tried on wedding dresses.

Looking at those pictures was like seeing myself for the first time. My arms! Yikes! They definitely need a little toning up before the wedding, so being the impulsive bride that I am, I immediately decided to get into a workout regimen. Mama Powder Puff, who is a RN and is a certified personal trainer, jumped on me like ugly on an ape with a full-on work out schedule, and a recommendation for her favorite workout videos, “The Firm”.

I’ve never really been able to get into workout videos, since I usually get bored after the first few uses. Not so with “The Firm.” The videos really keep your attention! I have one for toning the arms, and another for a general, all over workout. Let me tell you, these kicked my bootay BIG TIME the first time around. I’m talking, my-arms-were-so-sore-I-couldn’t-lift-them-to-wash-my-hair type of pain. But the next day, I felt great! Working out may be tough in the moment, but the feeling afterwards is awesome. That alone is keeping me motivated, and I can’t wait to see some changes in my body to go along with the warm, fuzzy feelings.

So far, I’ve really stuck with the program (I’m almost finished with my first week), and I’ll post some before and after pics for you girls when I go for my first fitting.

What are you doing to keep fit before your wedding?

I’m so excited to hear another bride uses The Firm videos! I have Ultimate Fat-Burning Workout and Total Body Time Crunch, but I will have to check out your recommendation, too.

I do the videos just twice a week with co-workers in our company’s fitness room (fitness room = empty room with padded floor and TV). They are challenging and I never get bored!

Keep us updated on your progress and if you have any other favorite Firm DVDs, please share!

I haven’t heard of that video before so thanks for the tip! I’m trying the 30-day shred. We’ll see how it goes!

I may have to get this! I have no intention of dieting for the wedding, but definitely want to do something to tone up my arms. Currently, I do push-ups and light weights at the gym, but on the days I can’t go I’d love to have something at home! Thanks :)

Which “The Firm” video do you use for your arm workouts? That’s exactly what I need. I have the 30-Day Shred (which I love) but I would like to supplement it with an arm-specific workout!

I’m doing the 30 Day Shred with my fiance, it totally kicks my butt and gives me an awesome workout. I can’t even get past the beginner level yet, but I look forward to doing it every day.

ooh, thanks for the rec! At the gym, I do cardio on the elliptical and stop in for random classes, and then I do Pilates at home… but this sounds like a fun alternative!

@Megan: @Erin-Kelley: I use the Firm Parts Upper Body workout for my arms, and lordy, let me tell you, it’s a workout! The first time around was rough, but it’s getting easier, so that’s a good thing! It’s a super old video that my mom gave me, but it’s a goody. They still sell it on the Firm Web site. :)

I signed up for Bridal Bootcamp at the New York Health and Racquet Club. I have 16 months until my wedding, so I’m only working with a trainer once a week at this point. I am also going to body sculpting classes twice a week.

Anyone have any “Zone” diet recommendations?

@ HappiJoyce: It’s a workout video by Jillian Michaels, it’s intense and totally awesome. It has 3 different 30 minute work outs, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced and focuses on her “3,2,1″ style of exercise. 3 minutes of strength training, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of core strength. I’m totally addicted to it.
