Hair and Makeup Trial: Part One

January 12th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Spring Roll

“Dee,” I yelled every morning from our shared bathroom, “can you please put my hair up?”

“This is the last time,” she replied, day after day. As she put my hair up, she would rub in my visible makeup lines. Without Sister Spring Roll, I would have spent many days with a bumpy, crooked ponytail and makeup lines galore.

For our wedding day, I decided it was best to hire a professional to do my hair and makeup. Although Sister SR is more than capable, I didn’t want to take time away from getting herself ready. After browsing The Knot’s community boards, I found an artist that I liked and contacted her. This past Tuesday, I had my trial.

This was the inspiration for my hair:

Despite the fact that I was a pincushion for bobby pins, I really liked the way my hair turned out. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my makeup; it was a bit too much for me. I wanted a soft, romantic look. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, so I didn’t want to be overdone and unnatural.

Although I really liked the artist, I went with my gut instinct and decided not to hire her for our wedding day. Instead, I called Sister SR. “Dee,” I said, “can you please do my hair and makeup on my wedding day?” “Yes,” she replied, “we’ll do a trial soon.”

Who is doing your wedding day hair and makeup?

hair-very pretty! (i like the makeup, but the important thing is YOU did not.) it does have to be a little heavier for pics though.

It is always best to go with your gut. My FSIL is doing my hair for the wedding (she does hair for a living) and I know it will be amazing. I was her model for a hair show she participated in a few years ago and she did a fabulous job. We’re going to start trials in a few months I think!

I think it’s the lipstick that’s throwing everything off. With how she did the eyes (which look amazing) you need a nuder and lighter lip. I’m sure your sis will do a great job!

I agree with deanna… the lip was way heavy. And very… glossy. Very glossy. Like, my curly hair would be permanently stuck in goo that thick.

I was originally replying to say that I’m lurv with your hair color. I just lightened up after being a dark auburn forEVER.

love the hair, it honestly looks better than the inspiration foto! About your makeup- are you wearing glasses on your wedding date or contacts? if you’re wearing glasses, then yes, the makeup is a bit too much. glasses make such a statement, that you need to go very natural with the makeup. a softer blush might also be better with your porcelain skin. If you’re wearing contacts, the makeup could work, albeit with a less glossy mouth. do you have pictures of the makeup without the glasses?

I LOVE the hair, but I do have to agree with you on the make-up… good job going with your gut :) I can’t wait to see Sister SR’s trial!

I can’t wait to see what your sis does because, no offense, I don’t like any of the stylist’s work. I think she just make you look too unnatural and I’m not seeing the connection between your hair and the inspiration photo.

The hair looks beautiful, but it’s definitely best to follow your gut. I’m sure the getting ready process will be a beautiful moment for bonding and reminiscing with your sister rather than an interruption in her getting ready process. :)

I agree with all the previous comments. The hair looks wonderful but I’m not as excited about the make-up. I think you made a good decision. Can’t wait to see the trial with your sister!

I love the hair! Have you tried getting your makeup done at Bare Essentials? Their makeup line allows for a more natural look for your skin, or it can be heavier. I use the product every day - and even if it ends up looking a bit heavy, within 10/15 minutes it looks better, as the makeup has calmed down. They usually have a spot in most department stores if they don’t have their own store near you. Good Luck!!!

Wow! You look great. I think that for the most part, your makeup looks very soft and romantic. I think the lip stick is what might be sticking out a bit to you. I’ve heard that nude/pale lips don’t look great in pictures, and that you should go with a bit more color on your wedding day. BUT, perhaps a soft natural pink color might look a little better.
Its best to go with your gut– Sister SR knows you so well, so I’m sure she’ll make you look beautiful!
Just make sure to wear a little more makeup than normal, since it will fade a bit. And I’ve heard that you should take pictures after a makeup trial if you’re doing it yourself, so that you can see how well the makeup shows up in pictures or if you need more. I guess that’s something that professional make up artists can judge better than we can.

I love your hair!!! Beautiful!! If you don’t feel comfortable with the make-up, you absolutely made the right decision. Judging from your profile picture, the makeup job is pretty, but doesn’t really seem your “style”.

The hair looks great, I love the new color on you! It’s good that you went with your gut. I loved your makeup, just a little less lip gloss. :)

@sara: I will be wearing my glasses, as will Mr. Spring Roll; my glasses have become such a big part of who I am. I should have taken photos without my glasses, but I didn’t :(

Your hair is so pretty! And it’ll be great to have your sister so involved with the hair/makeup since she knows you so well. Can’t wait for pics of her trial!

good call on the makeup, not that it looks bad, but it’s important to go with your gut about these things. on my own wedding day, everytime i looked in the mirror i freaked out a bit coz it was like looking at a stranger (or me as a clown, i thought) - it is NOT the best feeling.

Considering you’re gonna be doing a LOT of smooching, a darker color will need a lot of touching up (not to mention landing all over Mr Spring Roll’s kisser) so I agree, a lighter lip will be so much easier.

Oh you are making me hate my wedding day hairstyle, because I just love your trial! I do like that you are having your sister do it. I’m excited to see what she comes up with as well.

Wow! Your hair came out just like the inspiration photo! Looks great. I think your makeup looks really nice too, maybe a softer, more subtle lip color, like a soft pink or neutral, not naked but neutral. Even if you decide to go lighter on the make-up, keep the lashes (not sure if they you were wearing false ones or not but whatever the case, your eyes look beautiful). Good Luck!
