The Women Who Came Before Us…

January 12th, 2009 @ 6:16 pm by Mrs. Onion

Do you ever stop and think, “Wow, I really can do whatever I set my mind to,” and thank the countless women who came before us to make that possible? Seventy-one years ago, Miss Ford applied to Walt Disney Productions as an artist. She received the letter below and it just blew me away. She was told that women don’t do any of the creative work for Disney Cartoons but she could apply to be an “inker” or “painter” and fill in the drawings… but those places were limited and lots of “girls” apply.

Today there isn’t a single job that we couldn’t do if we wanted to do it. We can choose to work, choose to be a stay at home mom, choose to work from home… but they are all our choices. We aren’t expected to stay home with our children or expected to work, we can simply decide what works for us. We make choices for ourselves and together with our significant others.

So I’d like to raise a proverbial glass to the women who paved the way and women today and all that we are capable of in 2009 and beyond! Look at the path our daughters will have to lead… it brings me great joy.

This is such a great post. I am thankful for those who came before and things that they were able to accomplish. Many people take this simple things for granted but I am glad people like you take the time to remind others.

as someone in an industry that is STILL overwhelmingly male dominant, i can’t say enough how grateful i am for those who paved the way before me. let alone strangers, my own old school father kept asking me (even when i was in college majoring in the field) why i didn’t want to do something else!

I just saw this today on Feminist Law Profs also. I majored in Women’s History and yet still, the primary sources like this blow me away, even though I’ve seen it all before.

What a fabulous post! I went to an all-women’s college and having an appreciation for those that came before us was never far from our thoughts.

No way! I just saw that letter on an animator blog! Oi, I’d have dressed like a dude to get into that training school.

Here here!

When I watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” for the first time in high school, I was confused by the scene where the secretary looks for jobs in the “women” section. I didn’t understand what she meant and asked my parents. At first they were surprised that I didn’t know that job ads used to be separated into male and female listings - and then they were proud, I think, that their daughter didn’t know.

I work in a field (statistical research) that had very few women a decade or two ago. I can say first hand that many of the biases that girls shouldn’t or can’t learn math are STILL very much with us. I faced a lot of discouragement - from men AND women. Tell your sisters and daughters (and brothers and sons) that math is NOT “a boy’s subject” and encourage them to continue despite the social cues not to.

It wasn’t this girl, but there was a girl who worked as an ink-and-painter at the Walt Disney Company while they were in production for Snow White just prior to 1937. The animators ran into a huge problem partway through filming- they realized that Snow White was just way too pale to look real. They tried repainting the cells, but it looked way too harsh.

The ink-and-paint girl calmly went to her makeup bag, pulled out her blush, and proceeded to brush just a little bit on Snow White’s cheeks on every single cell. Thanks to her, the movie princess was rescued.

(this is what you learn when you’re a Disney cast member :) .)
