To Veil or Not to Veil, Part 1

To Veil or Not to Veil, Part 1 : wedding veil Cc13 cc1

This is Aubie, the much beloved mascot of Auburn University. Mr. CC is a huge Auburn fan, and I’m coming along. However, I do not like Aubie at all.

There is something mildly disturbing about the person behind that oversized head. I think my dislike has something to do with the unknown element here. Who is that exactly behind that oversized head, or that ridiculous clown makeup? (I hate clowns too, for the same reason.)

So, this takes me to the point at hand.

I don’t like heavy makeup, hats, oversized bows. I never paint my face for Halloween. I seldom wear hats. Although there are exceptions, like Civil War reenacting, in which it is socially unacceptable for a lady to be in mixed company without her head covered. And I will occasionally wear a hat at the beach. Mr. CC bought me an Auburn hat, which I proudly sported at the opening game of the 2008 season. This is the first hat I really felt comfortable in.

From the author’s personal collection—I was totally sporting as much AU merchandise as I possibly could!

So, when I first started choosing the pieces for my wedding day look, I was very anti-veil. I didn’t want anything covering my head or my face. I definitely leaned the way of beaded combs and vintage brooches.

Beautiful and simple. No scary child molester hiding under an oversized head. Right? Right.

Then I tried my dress on, and the consultant put a veil on my head. While I desperately hated that veil, it did up the “Bridal Factor” significantly.

But I kinda felt like the elbow length veil she put on my head (sorry, no pictures, because I’m a nerd and didn’t take my camera on that first trip) took away from the lovely corset back of my dress. At that point, I definitely decided I was going sans veil.

The first trip to the Bridal Shop to try on gowns was before I found wedding blogs, before Etsy, before Weddingbee, before StyleMePretty. It was also before I realized that the Bridal Shop is not the only place you can buy bridal accessories.

I started seeing pictures like this:

To Veil or Not to Veil, Part 1 : wedding veil Cc7 cc7

To Veil or Not to Veil, Part 1 : wedding veil Cc8 cc8

(1, 2, 3)

And started feeling differently about a veil. Those pictures make me want a veil, just for those kinds of photo-ops.

Next up, veil inspiration!

I loved loved the veil. Putting it on before the wedding somehow changed the electricity in the room - like it was really happening. I know it is silly, and I was not super bride-y or anything, but you can wear it for the ceremony and then take it off for the rest of the night!

I felt the same way you did. In the end I bought a Cathedral veil, which is probably the longest type of veil there is. There’s just something about the veil that puts everything together. Go out and give it a test and see how you feel about it. It feels different right when you have the actual veil on you.=)

I dunno, I stuck by my decision not to wear a veil throughout–despite my mother’s constant protests. I wore a flower in my hair during my wedding, and I was happy with the total result of my outfit. However, at one point I was considering the birdcage veil…simply lovely! You can wear one not covering your face, Miss CC. It also won’t hide your corset-back.

i LOVE the cathedral veils!! even if it is just for the ceremony and pictures and then nothing for the reception. why not look for one that won’t break your budget JUST for photos?

I didn’t want a veil at first either, that is until I went w/ a friend to buy her veil and tried it on and FELL.IN.LOVE! My problem however it that I like my veils poofy so if a poofy veil doesn’t go with the dress I pick, I will have to go no veil in the end.

West Coast bride

You don’t have to wear a blusher, and your veil can be fastened into the back of your hairdo, leaving your whole face visible (unless your religious ceremony requires that any veil be specifically the traditional type). Also, consider a blusher tucked in the back of your ‘do, with a beaded brooch or comb on the side as well. I saw someone wear a silk peony on the side of her updo, with a really short blusher coming out the back of the ‘do and it looked gorge.

When is there an appropriate time for something as abnormal, extravagant and bold as a veil? I decided to wear one not simply because I love the look (I don’t in fact, I’m wearing a bird carge veil) but because I knew I would never have another reason to ever wear a veil again!

Completely off topic, but YAY for another Auburn fan! My fiance is an AU grad and my bro is there now :-)

Oh, and I second west coast bride in the sense that you’re probably not going to have another chance to wear a veil AND there are so many things you can do to to make it not so…veil-y. And it makes for some definite photo greatness

Whoa! How weird to go get my daily fix of wedding bee and see Aubie! I’m a grad student at Auburn (although I’m actually a huge Alabama fan…) who is also mildly creeped out by mystery people in fuzzy costumes. I also am thinking of foregoing the veil. But those pictures are divine! Best wishes for your planning Miss CC!

Oh Miss CC….how can you not like Aubie?!?! ;) I had a friend who was one of the Aubies when I was in school and we never knew if it was him or not b/c they can’t speak while they are in costume so if we ran into Aubie around on game day we’d just invite him to wherever we were gathering that night…just in case it was “our” Aubie. I still think of that now when we are there for the games and I pass him.

Sorry…back to veils…I’m iffy on a veil as well. My MOH hit the description of how I feel about them dead on…it’s like wearing a mosquito net on my head. I’m leaning toward a vintage brooch or flower piece. However, there is a lady in an ATL suburb that handmakes veils to your specs for quite a bit less than the bridal stores…http://www.veilsbyolena.com/ It was great for a petite friend who wanted a custom length and it was $30 I think.

Not your point, I know, but thanks for the tip on the brooches and beaded combs. I am undecided on the veil & when my dress comes in 6 weeks I will decide for sure. I was not sold on veils because I didn’t want to be “veiled” but as a pretty part of the outfit (and yes, photo-ops), I like!

woohoo!!!!! WAR EAGLE!! and yay Aubie!!! I’m an Auburn Grad (’05)…and I believe in Auburn and Love It (excerpt from the Auburn Creed) :). Sorry…I think I got a little too excited actually seeing all the Auburn stuff on this page! I had to do a double take to see where you were from.

anyway…I’m very pro-veil. I’ve had several close friends get married over the past couple years and very few of them have worn veils…which made me think that maybe they’re on the out or they’re old-fashioned or something…BUT, thankfully I don’t think that’s the case. I LOVE a veil…especially a long veil…especially a long veil with lace, and I’m currently on the hunt for one of my own! :)

I am not a veil person at all, but they are so pretty in pictures.

I’m also not an Auburn fan at all…Roll Tide. ;)

I thought I was a no veil bride too, but the bridal salon I bought my dress from was having a free veil with Maggie Sottero purchases promotion. How could I pass up a free veil (up to $150 value)? And I totally agree that it ups the “bridal factor”.

I was also not a veil girl - but then one of my college girlfriends offered to “pass down” her veil as my “something borrowed” - and I was touched by the gesture! The veil started with my friend Sarah who was married on 11/07, then my other friend Jamie wore it in 6/08, and now I will wear it in 5/09… I cant wait to pass it down to the next friend that gets married! (hopefully she will wear ivory/champagne too - so she matches!)

I feel the same way you do about clowns, hats, veils, etc. I don’t like them (on me) & didn’t think I would wear one.

THEN, I see shots like you posted and it makes me want one. I tried on a fingertip veil in the store, but am now thinking a long, single layer one might be the way to go…
