Mrs. Hot Cocoa's Picture
Mrs. Hot Cocoa, Boston/Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 31, JD/PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Medical Student Engagement Date: May 30, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: April, 2008 Venue: Ritz Carlton, Marina Del Rey About Me: I am a professional student by day and an amateur cupcake taster, bargain shopper, and wedding planner by night. I am obsessed with NPR, the Food Network, paper, dance shows, Anthropologie, post-structuralist theory, Weddingbee!, "The Office," and celebrity gossip. When not procrastinating from my dissertation, I spend time catering to Jellyby, our overly anxious shih tzu, and getting to know Mr. Hot Cocoa. We have only been dating for fifteen years, so it's like I'm in love with a stranger! From the East Coast, we are planning a Jewish-Chinese Extravaganza in L.A., where we both grew up.
About Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Once upon a time, there was a girl who grew up in the Valley.* All the coolest kids in her class had rad bar and bat mitzvahs, and she was like, totally jealous. She too wanted to have a huge party, with an awesome theme like “Dance!” or “Hollywood”, and to invite all the cute boys in her class to do the Electric Slide and drink Shirley Temples with her in a fancy ballroom. And she’d wear a super chic dress that was off-the-shoulder and made of taffeta and velvet. Oh, and there was going to be this huge posterboard with her picture on it, on which everyone who was anyone was going to write their deepest, most sincere thoughts, like “Stay kool!” or “Friends 4-eva”. It was going to be soooooo awesome!

That girl, of course, was me. I ended up getting the taffeta and velvet dress, which I wore to almost every one of the twenty or so bar and bat mitzvahs I attended. But I never got the rad bat mitzvah of my dreams…

until last weekend, when my bridal party threw me a Bat-chelorette Shower-Mitzvah, complete with a giant posterboard for the guests to write their deepest, most sincere thoughts! I didn’t have to read a Torah portion, but I did have to pass a test about Judaism delivered by Sister of Honor L, Groomswoman I, and our friend A. Although I’d been studying hard in my conversion class, I still managed to miss an embarrassingly easy question about what goes on a seder plate. D’oh.

I got enough right on the quiz to get some fab prizes, like these sexy underpants, which will help Mr. HC identify my best and largest asset in yiddish.

Since the shower portion of the event was craft-themed, my friends presented me with an array of crafty goodies, including stamps, decorative papers, and fancy stationery. But I also received some bat-mitzvah-appropriate items, including this set of Hebrew letters cookie cutters from Friends-of-honor (FOH) A, L, and G, which will make studying Hebrew so much more delectable.

The funniest gift of the evening was from FOH B, who included with her gift a card that said: “On the day you become a Jewish woman, you join an illustrious line of matriarchs who from time immemorial have practiced the glorious and much-honored tradition of regifting.” LOL. And in that tradition, she also presented me with the veil and boa I gave her at her bachelorette party a year and a half ago!

Above is a photo of FOH B and me at her bachelorette party. I inherited the horns below.

Pretty hot, huh? Once the devil veil and feather boa were on, all bets were off. And, as you’ll see in my next post, shenanigans ensued…

Want to see incriminating pictures of those shenanigans? Then share your ideas about fun shower games!

* That’s the San Fernando Valley, for you non-Californians.

I think you just described Mr. Peep’s barmitzvah to a T. His theme was - The Apple of our Eye - as in Apple Computers. He was way ahead of the curve (or just a geek), and his Mom still has a life sized cut out of him with all of his friends signatures!!

I’m pretty sure I had that same taffeta and velvet dress, but in pink polka-dot instead of green.

I love, love, love, love this shower idea!!!!! Love the tush panties and hebrew cookie cutters!! Looking forward to the rest of the recap!

At my shower, the guests made a list of ~20 “dares” I had to complete during the night and wrote them on the back of a hot pink BRIDE t-shirt. (Like, kiss 20 people in one minute, dance on a table, get the band/dj to play a Raffi song…) Whoever helped me do the dare got to check off the item on my t-shirt. It was a great idea, because it got us really active and interactive when we went out. Most people will do anything for a bachelorette party - even if they don’t know the bride!

@Miss Peep Toe: I love that theme! Geek chic!

@Miss Latte: I hope you rocked it with a matching polka dot scrunchie.

@peachypear: That’s such a fun game! We did something similar, but I love the t-shirt element.

For a friend’s bachelorette, her MOH specified on the invite that we were to bring a pair of undies and the bachelorette was going to have to guess who they were from. It was tons of fun, with people bringing everything from granny panties to edible underwear (with plenty of nice, usable pairs in between). It was also nice because it kept the lingerie cost down since there was a bridal shower the same day (since the bride and about half the guests were from OOT).

We played a fun game at my cousin in laws shower. We had both the grooms and the brides mother sit back to back and we had them answer questions about the bride and groom that we had had them answer in advance. Things like…who spends more money? Who is the better cook? We gave the moms a heel and a cowboy boot. The groom is a country boy and they raised it to answer questions. It was fun and the bride got a break from being the center of attention.

We also played a simplified version of family feud that was pretty fun. It was a couples shower so we had the bride and groom pick several teammates and then we passed out a short quiz (5-10) questions for guests to fill out. Things like “What are you certain to find in David and Ashley’s Costco cart?” What magazine is David subscribed to? It was a fun. You have to have someone act as host and you have to collect the surveys and tally the answers before the game.

How fun! And I grew up just outside the SFV (a “Valley” that doesn’t quite count as “The Valley”). I miss CA so much!

@Mrs. Smith: I don’t know where my SOH got them, but they’re available at Rabbi’s Daughters, which has a whole line of fun yiddish clothing: http://www.rabbisdaughters.com/

@JoanLindsay: I love that you had a couple’s shower and were able to have your parents be involved!

@Anne: That’s a great idea — I don’t know if I would ever have guessed correctly, since all of my friends would no doubt have gotten me tush underpants! With my love of yiddish and large rear end, nothing would have been more appropriate.

Man, I’m in Michigan, and bar/baht mitzvahs are exactly the same. Right down to the Shirley Temples. Amazing.
