To Veil or Not to Veil, Part 2

January 15th, 2009 @ 3:50 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

So, now I was having mixed feelings about veils. Really, about hair pieces in general. I was head over heels in love with the flower trend.

Could I wear both? Or maybe I should wear a veil for the ceremony and a flower for the reception? Argh… there were so many decisions to be made.

I hemmed and hawed about veils for literally months! By this point, I had decided I wanted one. I just needed to make a decision about what it was going to look like. And I was still debating about a flower. The comb idea had been completely disregarded.

During this stage of planning, I hadn’t settled on the vintage/compass theme yet. We were working with a pink and clover color scheme with a peony theme. I was leaning towards a traditional veil for the ceremony and a flower for the reception.

I didn’t want anything too long, or terribly fancy or fluffy. I either wanted something very, very plain, or something with a little bling to match the bodice of my dress.

And then we left the peony theme for the vintage theme. And, while I had always loved the birdcage look, I just wasn’t confident enough to try to pull it off without it “matching” the theme.

I knew I would not be able to handle a traditional birdcage

Since it would obviously cover my face. I thought I should probably go with something a little more chic and off-center.

Thank you Mrs. Sea Breeze and, yes, I really do love Katherine Heigl!

I was really, really struggling with this decision. I considered turning to the hive for help, but I just wasn’t ready to put it all out there like that. I’m about the most indecisive person I’ve ever met. I didn’t want to bring this struggle to y’all without having some kind of decision already made. I didn’t want y’all to have to watch me straddle the fence and change my mind 16 times about the veil decision.

So… what do you think I chose?

I like the idea of the flower and then the veil set lower on your head together… I love veils… and when else can you wear one?

I myself am a “not to veil.” But of course, I’m having my wedding gown made for me out of bedsheets, so… it was either no veil… or a pillowcase… er… yeah.
The birdcage idea is lovely. I hope you went with that.

You can definitely do a flower on your hair with a veil set below it - I think that looks lovely, then you can remove the veil for the reception. The birdcage I like when it doesn’t cover your face, but of course that is because it would drive me crazy to have something over my face!

I want to have a flower and veil (a la Mrs. Tiramisu) for the ceremony, and then take off the veil and just leave in the flower for the reception :)

I am contemplating the same thing. I came across 5eizen on etsy and now I’m itching to get a birdcage veil from her…looks like she does custom veils too.

I’ve had the same struggle as you with veils. I love the traditional look of tulle, but I wanted the more vintage birdcage.

I have no idea what you’ve chosen, nor could I even hazard a guess… but you can click on my name to get to my blog and see what I chose ;)

We’re already watching you straddle the fence–I’ve been checking back practically every hour, waiting for you to reveal your decision ever since you posted Part I of this entry! By golly, please tell us already!

PS I’m a birdcage bride all the way and really cannot wait!

@dswirl21: Awww!

I loved my flower and veil! The plan was to take the veil off at the reception, but then a combination of me loving it and a hailstorm making my hair fall out that led to me just leaving it on all night :)

Go with your heart! That said, I wore a gorgeous silk flower, the same silk as my dress, that had a swavorski crystal broach in the center…i can’t tell you how many compliments i got on it. it sat lower and off to the side and i wore a chapel length veil over it. it was covered by the veil during the ceremony but the veil was only 1 layer so you could see it through a bit. i then took it off for the reception. my thoughts are that you only get to wear a veil once and (truly) nothing makes you feel more like a bride. i’d be glad to send you a pic if you think it might help you make up your mind!

I am going with veil for the ceremony, flower or hair bobble for the reception. I could still change my mind and only have two weeks until the big day!

I hope you borrow the Mrs. Sea Breeze look! I know I’m wishing I had done that. Or even better…done the Mrs. Tiramisu look for the church and the Mrs. Sea Breeze look for the reception! Don’t ya just hate how hindsight is 20/20? :)
