Simply… Quotes

January 15th, 2009 @ 6:07 pm by Mrs. Quiche

I am a lover of quotes. I want to find a way to incorporate quotes into our wedding day, but I am not exactly sure how to accomplish this.

A first place to start would be with our invitations. I’d like to have a short quote by one of my favorite authors, poets, songwriters (oh songwriters…you truly are magic), etc. at the top of our invitations. I love Paulo Coelho and can find inspiration in so many of his books. I also love Brian Andreas, one of my favorite whimsical storytellers and artists.

Here are a few that I have in mind:

“The moment we begin to seek love, love begins to seek us.” - Paulo Coelho

“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.” - Paulo Coelho

“We sat side by side in the morning light and looked out at the future together.” - Brian Andreas

Before we decided to hire an invitation designer (before we were even engaged, for that matter!), we wanted to use Brian Andreas’ Storypeople cards for our invitations. They have a Friendship Card Set with four different quotes and drawings. I liked the idea of having different “versions” of our invitation.

1. Just Friends - “I saw them standing there pretending to be just friends, when all the time in the world could not pry them apart.”

2. Late Night - “In the end, I think that I will like that we were sitting on the bed, talking and wondering where the time had gone.”

3. Real Reason - “There are things you do because they feel right and they make no sense and they may make no money and it may be the real reason we are here: to love each other and to eat each other’s cooking and say it was good.”

4. Kindred Spirits - “You’re the strangest person I ever met, she said, and I said, you too, and we decided we’d know each other a long time.”

I planned to create and print simple invitation wording and then attach it to the inside of the card and include our own RSVP. Part of me still wants to do this, but the cost is a little more than we wanted to spend (and I have sample ideas from our designer in-hand and LOVE them! More on that soon!).

I love these custom candleholders:

So, I’ve got two questions. Which quote do you like best for our invitations? What are some other ways that you could incorporate quotes into the day of your wedding?

There are LOTS of ways to incorporate quotes (I love ‘em too!) I wish I wasn’t at work right now, or I would share a few of my faves with you.

There are a few ways I’ve seen and thought about doing it

1. programs, if you’re having them
2. on the back of table cards
3. on a message line with photos of you and Mr. Quiche
4. projected onto the wall (you could have a continuous loop during dinner, or since you’ll probably be outside you could project it on your dance floor if you’re having one)
5. invitations, as you mentioned
6. thank you cards
7. in the corners, border, or reverse sides of pages in your guest book, if you’re having one

West Coast bride hit most of the suggestions I was going to make but I’ve also seen/heard of:

1. table decorations - printed out quotes in picture frames along with the table numbers and/or centerpieces
2. in your vows (if you’re writing your own)
3. in your ceremony as part of a reading

I love Real Reasons and Kindred Spirits. I would go with Real Reasons for your invites. It would look great on your programs too!

oh my i love quotes too!!! more specifically lyrics. they’re just so magical and say so much. your idea of incorporating them into your invites is way cool. i really like the Kindred Spirits quote - “You’re the strangest person I ever met, she said, and I said, you too, and we decided we’d know each other a long time.”

you could also ask your ceremony officiant to end the ceremony with your favorite quote, give your husband a card w/ the quote written on it, have it printed on OOT bags.

I love Brian Andreas! My dad actually gave me a framed print of his for Christmas (connections). Another good quote that could work by him is “He loved her for almost everything she was & she decided that was enough to let him stay for a very long time.” (Mr. Right).

I love the alchemist and so I like Paulo the second Paulo quote is my fav. There is so much you could do with that quote. I don’t think there is a limit to how you can include it. Such as others have said but I think including in your vows could be really special and a way to personalize your vows.

All the quotes are beautiful, but this one stood out to me for an invite:

“We sat side by side in the morning light and looked out at the future together.” - Brian Andreas

There are some great ideas above for using quotes!

I just used a quote for our invitation. We used a pocketfold, and, the quote is on the pocket when you open our invite up. The quote is from When Harry Met Sally: “…when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. “

love the quotes! i’m using them in couple places - on our save the date, in the program, on the back of the favor tags (on one side is our monogram & a thank you, on the other a quote) and then lastly on the wine bottles that will be at each table but that will be a quote about the joy of wine (think ben franklin) - i really like the candles that you show and maybe thats an idea i could use - but maybe i’ll be in a little quote overkill at that point!

Did you see this?: http://www.weddingbeepro.com/2009/01/13/save-the-date-finished/

And my vote on the quote would be the first one…

I used love quotes inside the place card. One side had the table name, the other the quote.

I tracked down one quote for every card but I ended up using only about 45 different quotes because I was short on time.

I thought it was an unexpected detail that would get guests talking at their tables. Did that happen? I have no idea, haha.

I love the Brian Andreas quote. I also love this quote - “Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meaning can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.” ~MLK, Jr.

Two pages of the program were quoted lyrics from all of the pre-wedding music, and the last page was the “math/not math game,” where famous quotes about math, music, beauty, and other topics were printed with the subject missing, and you had to guess if they were about math or not. The answers were inside the table numbers, and we later posted the whole thing on our website.

I ordered some gocco napkins with our wedding quote on them from an Etsy seller. They were really inexpensive, and for cocktail/dessert time it could be a fun way to incorporate a whole bunch of quotes!

We had a theme of love quotes. They were everywhere! They were on all things paper, including napkins. They were a big part of our ceremony and vows, we had about 7 members of our family rise from there seat and recite a quick poem or quote, that part was especially special to us.
I printed a different quote on a decorated tag and hung a tag on each of the guest’s chairs. We also had a Pablo Neruda poem spiraling down one of the tiers of our cake.
If anyone is interested in a list I compiled of about 120 different love quotes ( a friend of mine used the list and printed them on vellum that she wrapped around a votive candle for her tables) they are in my bio.
