Part XVIII: Cutting the Cake

January 16th, 2009 @ 8:32 am by Mrs. Pinot Noir

After our walk down memory lane it was time to cut the cake. The cake was displayed in the room adjacent to the dining area (the same place where we watched the video).

We placed framed photos of our parents and grandparents around the cake. My original idea was to use vintage photo frames from local thrift stores (a very eco-friendly choice) but they turned out to be much too difficult to locate. With my stress levels rising and my savings account decreasing we decided to go to the ever-reliable Michaels. We located these simple metal frames that were inexpensive and super light (to save on shipping costs!).

We decided to pass on the traditional wedding cake and instead serve a delicious desert made by the pastry chef at Auberge du Soleil. We still wanted to honor the tradition of cutting the cake so we ordered a small 7″ cake to be delivered from a local bakery, Sweetie Pies. I purchased the cake stand on eBay for $10! It was very tarnished but with a quick polish it looked new again! I always love when I can save money and the environment at the same time!

To cut the cake we used an antique cake knife that my great grandparents had for their wedding. The knife is handcrafted silver and has an “R” on the handle for their married name.

The staff at Auberge came through again and put out the plates, forks and glasses of wine. I would never have thought to ask for this and without their help we probably would have been eating cake with our hands (no doubt upping the probability of cake smashing!).

Our photographer grabbed us for a quick shot before our guests gathered for the show!

Finally it was time to cut the cake! Mr. Pinot Noir pinky-swore to me that there would be no cake smashing. I told him my makeup was too expensive to be ruined by cake! He can be pretty sneaky though so I was a little bit nervous that he might conveniently forget about our agreement.

Oh no… Here he comes! Luckily I was able to enact revenge and the frosting was all confined our noses!

Have you and your significant other discussed your cake feeding strategies? Do you think you will be civilized or do you think there will be frosting-to-skin contact?

FH and also have a strict no cake on the face policy… I once heard the cake cutting/feeding describe as an example of the couple is going to take care of each other, smashing just doesn’t fit with that.
I love the shot of you two smiling at your refection in the mirror :)

I told FH he is in big trouble if cake gets smashed on my face and ends up on my dress. Hopefully it will be nice!

You guys look so happy!

Haha I told FI that the wedding is a total deal breaker if he smashes cake in my face!! I’ll go for an annulment right there lol ;)

My husband has type I diabetes, so we cut the cake, he fed me a piece, I loaded up a syringe and gave him a shot of insulin…

@Sarah: Haha. That is really funny (that you gave him insulin, not that he has diabetes!)

I, too, made Mr. SR pinky swear that he would not shove cake it my face; I think he will stick to his word, as long as I do the same.

I’m not so sure… I told him there was to be no cake smashing but there was no concrete promise made by him… I still have a couple months to work on it.

Definitely no cake smashing for us. It seems like an immature act of aggression, not the way I want to start out our marriage!

No cake smashing for us either… my friend thought I was prissy for not wanting this but seriously… I think it’s up to the couple and their preferance. And I preferred not to have cake all up in my eyelashes and sinuses ;)

I think it looks so disrespectful, you’ve just committed to loving one another and you turn around and smash icing and cake over the person you want to spend the rest of your life with?!?! No thanks, me and the mister will be nicely feeding one another.
