About Mrs. Latte

New York, New York, Part 2

January 20th, 2009 @ 11:17 am by Mrs. Latte

Much to Mr. Latte’s disappointment (or maybe relief is a better word), he couldn’t get out to the East Coast for the 2nd installment of the big, bad venue search. So, Day 2’s victim? Momma Latte. I dragged poor Momma Latte around town to check out three more venues. Our first stop?

The Central Park Boathouse, New York NY

There is nothing more “New York” than Central Park. And the CPB is located right smack in the middle of it. It’s also right next to the lake, home of the Venetian gondolas, and also where Mr. Latte and I spent a lot of time talking and getting to know each other on our first date. The ceremony would be held inside the main ballroom, cocktails would be outside on the terrace, and everyone would come back indoors for dinner. The room itself is beautiful… the dark wood and huge windows just gives it a super romantic feel.

Momma Latte loved it! And apparently, so did everyone else getting married in NYC. Not surprisingly, the CPB books up FAST. They didn’t have our holiday weekend available, but had a couple of nights open later in the summer. I wanted to check with Mr. Latte before making any hasty decisions, so we decided to move on to our next location.

Romantic, no?

Bridgewaters, New York, NY

I was really excited to check out Bridgewaters. It’s located right in the South Street Seaport and boasts views of the Brooklyn Bridge. There are two function rooms that share the top floor of the building. We really liked the Bridge Room, which would be used for both the ceremony and dinner. The Terrace Room was connected to an outdoor terrace that would be used for the cocktail hour. The main room had beautiful wood floors and these cool, funky light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The windows around the room really gave it a nice, open feel.

We really liked Bridgewaters. It was in a great location, had a nice look and was available our holiday weekend. Mr. Latte wasn’t crazy about the lights, but we both considered it a top contender.

Stage 6 at Steiner Studios, Brooklyn NY
Stage 6 is creative catering queen Abigail Kirsch’s newest location. It’s situated in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, right inside the Steiner Studios lot. It’s the biggest film and movie studio east of LA, which immediately grabbed this US Weekly and Perez Hilton lovin’ Latte’s attention. Momma Latte and I rolled up and walked in on… a red carpet! Yup, they roll out the red carpet for their events!

Stage 6 only holds one event at a time, which means that all four glorious floors would be all ours. And glorious they are. The top floor is the rooftop, and has a huge outdoor terrace. It would be a gorgeous space for an outdoor ceremony, or a fun place to hang out during cocktail hour. The 3rd floor ballroom has floor to ceiling windows with views of the Brooklyn Bridge. There’s a separate room that can be used for an indoor ceremony. There are even two bridal suites, so Mr. Latte and buddies can use one for… whatever they do while we ladies get ready.

I wasn’t crazy about the carpet and hated the chairs, but the size, open feel of the space and that gorgeous rooftop terrace won me over. And just from reputation, we knew that the food was going to be awesome. And what’s that? George Clooney is filming here? SOLD.

Pretty bride at end of the hall… this one gives me the chills

I took lots of pictures and sent them over to Mr. Latte. We went back and forth between Stage 6, Bridgewaters and Battery Gardens (oh that staircase!!!) and finally decided to go with Stage 6. They had our holiday weekend wide open so we snagged the Friday night, thinking that out-of-towners would probably have that day off from work. And it was much more cost-effective than the Saturday night option, which pretty much sealed the deal.

And just like that… the Lattes had a venue!

How many potential venues did you visit before you found “the one”?

So excited to read about another Manhattan Bee’s planning experiences!

I’m also getting married in Manhattan but limited my possible reception venues to only those places that would allow any caterer (my fiance and I are huge foodies and did not want to be limited to just the in-house option). I visited 3 venues in Manhattan (Angel Orensanz, Council on Foreign Relations, and the NY Public Library) before deciding on the one: Council on Foreign Relations. I adore my venue.

Your venue is beautiful!
We looked at 2 places before we found THE ONE! :) Our first stop was Liberty Mountain where we first went snowboarding last winter but ski resorts aren’t nearly as pretty in October (at least in our opinion). Then we went to Thorpewood and we knew that was the place. We are both outdoorsy people, so that, coupled with the fact that it’s a place for inner city kids to learn about the outdoors & it’s a green facility, we couldn’t have found a better place. Our parents love it too!
We’re so lucky because it really is perfect for us. :D

Your venue looks amazing! Love the rooftop terrace. We looked at 2 places in Cleveland. After seeing the first I couldn’t imagine having the wedding anywhere else, but I wanted to look at one more place just to be sure. The second place was nowhere NEAR the amazing-ness of the first. We’re going to book our venue Thursday!!

I’m a Battery Gardens bride (March- so soon!) and was excited to read your posts on venues- all these were on my list as well. I never even thought of the staircase as an issue- I love the look and feel of the BG. We got engaged at the Ritz in Battery Park so it’s perfect for us! Stage Six was on my original list- it seems like a really cool NYC space.

wow, those venues are so pretty. I would have waited another year to have the boathouse! I checked out studios too. They are awesome because they have so much space!

I went to a wedding here - actually the second one ever - and it was soooo great!! Let me tell you, I have no recollection of the chairs or carpet because the food was so delicious (Abigail Kirsch food rocks) and the space so amazing. Congrats!!!

I would have loved Stage 6. Unfortunately we wanted to have a smaller wedding and knoew we would not be able to make their minimums. I’m excited to see your ideas for decorating the space.

I love your venue! Going to be gorgeous walking the red carpet! I think having the cocktail hour or the reception on the roof would be amazing. If inclement weather is looming, you could add a tent up there to part of the area maybe? I’m a sucker for a gorgeous outdoor event. Plus all the huge windows give such a good feel to the venue.

Great choice!

Looks great. We only looked at one place. We went the day after we were engaged and booked the next week. I knew it was the one and felt no need to look elsewhere.

Hi Miss latte,
I know this comes off incredibly tasteless but do you mind sharing the price details of stage 6 with me?

@Janna19: Good to know! They don’t do tastings so we’re going totally on reputation.

I had my reception at Stage 6 last summer (July) and I couldnt imagine having it anywhere else, the venue is truly amazing and will leave your guests saying “WOW”! Like you I hated the chairs so I ended up renting and by the time the tablecloths are on the tables, the carpet sort-of disappears (trust me). Eric Hoffman the event manager is one-of-a kind and so accomodating, I could go on and on…. Great choice!!!

@bkbride08: Oh I would love to see your pictures! Trying to decide on a florist right now…and convince Mr. L that I need chiavari chairs.

After meeting with everyone on the florist list we went with Atlas, and I am so happy that we did. We worked with Jeannie and she became so much more than just a vendor through the process, loved her! (we also did most of our rentals through Atlas)
