The Little Sticker Maker That Could

January 20th, 2009 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Taffy

I had never heard of a Xyron machine until Mrs. Hydrangea posted about it here. A Xyron machine creates stickers out of anything that is thin enough to pass through it. I had been interested in wrapping a ribbon around the top of the vases for our centerpieces, and this looked like the perfect way to go! I was under the impression that buying a Xyron machine would be a pretty big investment, especially since I rarely scrapbook. I thought I would have to drop at least $30 or $40, plus money for the adhesive refills. Last week I went to take the plunge, Jo-Ann’s coupon in hand. I was delighted to find this tiny model, which only cost me $6 after my 40% off coupon! The adhesive refills are also under $6. :)

It is the Xyron 1.5″ create-a-sticker. This seems perfect for my project, as I will not be using ribbon more than an inch wide. I was completely thrilled to find such an affordable option! I wanted to pass it along in case you bees thought getting a Xyron meant spending a lot of cash and clearing off shelf space to store it, like I did. This machine is quite small and can easily be tucked into a drawer or crafting box. It does not require batteries or electricity.

I haven’t tried it yet, as I need to find the vases for our centerpieces first. ;) I do have questions for seasoned Xyron users, though.

Would it be best to use the permanent adhesive or the repositionable adhesive for this project?

Have you used a Xyron for wedding related projects? What did you use it for?

not for a wedding related project, but i used the xyron adhesive roller thing for some notecards i made for christmas [i backed the paper with some fun, brightly pattered scrapbook paper] and not only does that thing stick but it made it so much easier and faster to bind the paper together. i love it and i can’t believe i went this long without it. so much better than using double-sided tape and glue sticks. at least i know the glue isn’t going to wear off!

Thanks for posting this! I didn’t realize such an option existed, and it looks perfect for some of my projects as well!

You will regret not buying a bigger one! I’m addicted to my 510!

I use that for scrapbooking; it’s great to put small die cuts through because it’s so hard to get adhesive on something so small. I’ve never tried the repositional adhesive for the Xyron, but for my other adhesives, the repositional is more like a post it note, so I don’t know if you could count on it sticking long term.

@cricketpe: Thanks! The machine came with permanent adhesive, so I should be all set. :)

@chrissy: I think it would work really well! Make sure that you get the right machine for the width that you need. I think there is a 2.5 inch for around $24, pre coupon. :)

@Mrs. Penguin: I have considered this! I just could not pass up the bargain, especially since I don’t have a project in mind besides smaller width ribbon. I can always upgrade! ;)

@Tea: I’m so glad to hear that you love it! It is more motivation for me to get started on the project. :)

@linzella: No problem! I remember how excited I was when I saw Mrs. Hydrangea’s post. I hate using messy adhesives, and this looks so much better!

@Mrs. Green Tea: I know! I could not believe how inexpensive it was.

I am looking for an excuse to get a Xyron. I am determined to have one before the wedding…now I just need a project. Can’t wait to see how your vases turn out!

@chrissy: For some of the bigger Xyron machines, you can buy cartridges for laminating and magnets. You might want to use the laminating cartridges for luggage tags. I believe they also make laminating sheets that do not require the use of the machine. I have the 5″ Creative Station and I know you can get those cartridges for that side, though I haven’t used them yet.

Wait until you can get a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Joann’s! They have them all the time and you can save quite a bit. Just sign up for their e-mails to get the coupons.

You can always surf ebay for the bigger ones. I purchased my 900 from a hopeful scrapbooker who decided it wasn’t for her. She had used maybe 12 inches of the initial roll she loaded. It even came with 2 extra cartridges…all for $65 (and that included shipping!)

Thanks so much for posting about this. I’d always thought this little wonder-machine was ignored by the Bees, so I’m so glad that someone decided to post about it. I used the 1.5” Xyron to make wrap-around labels for my save-the-dates and invites. While it’s not AS convenient as the 510 or 900 because you have to cut all of the individual labels before making them into stickers, the price of this makes a small inconvenience well worth it. Thanks again for such a great post!

@Miss Spring Roll: Will do, Miss Spring Roll! Since I am a slacker and don’t have the vases yet, I’ll probably try it on a vase I already have. ;)

@Miss Latte: I think there are a million ways to use this, even this little one! I am probably going to use it for attaching ribbons to the escort cards, programs, maybe even invites! I will keep you updated on the vase project. :)

@cricketpe: That’s awesome! I was pretty overwhelmed by the selection, so I didn’t get all of the details on the bigger models. It took me a while to even realize that the store has them locked in a case in the back. Very hard to find!

@gg+sb: That’s a great idea! I will keep that in mind if I ever need to upgrade.

@Lilhawkeye2: Thanks! Yes, for $6 I am definitely willing to do more work. I’m really excited about the inexpensive refills too, as I think I would end up wasting a wider roll, even if I put multiple ribbon strands through.
