I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

So… I’m a Slob

January 20th, 2009 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. D'orsay

I’m not dirty you see, as I like things germ-free. I’m just very very messy. A pair of socks here, 10 pairs of shoes there, 4 sweaters over the chair… a towel on the floor. Yeah, I’m only telling you about half the things I see as I look around.

(Not our room)

Now, being a slob is fine when you live by yourself, or if you slob it all up in your room and leave the common spaces neat for your roommates. But living with Mr. D I’ve found it much harder to slob it up in our bedroom because apparently we have to share our space. What’s all that about?

So although Mr. D and I made joint resolutions for the New Year (buy local, use our reusable bags EVERY TIME and no more swearing) I wanted to make one of my own.

For me, it was time to get neat. While I may be good at keeping bathrooms germ free, I really needed to work on picking up after myself and others. I even found this snazzy blog: The Hyper Homemaker.

You might think the Hyper Homemaker has always been as such, but really she used to be like ME! She confesses that she too was once messy AND she hated doing the dishes (me too!!!). So I figure, if she can do it, so can I! She gives helpful tips on how to have a “Simply Organized 2009″ by helping you to make a plan. She selected specific days to do specific areas:

Monday: Outside / Garden
Tuesday: Kitchen
Wednesday: Bathrooms
Thursday: Living areas
Friday: Bedrooms
Saturday: Laundry
Sunday: Off

Where am I starting? In our closets, or rather, lack of closets, because in our house in England we don’t have closets. We’ll pick out things that we can give away to charity and things to throw away or sell. I also enjoy her “Works for me Wednesday” and “Fifteen Minute Friday” features, which helps me to stay on top of things and also gives me new ways to stay organized. I hope I can keep my personal resolution, because once Mr. D and I have a place to call our own I’d like to be able to find our cats again.

Any of you co-habitators out there try to bridge the gap between messy and neat? What are your favorite tips?

Yes…& we’ve been living together for over 3 years. I try to emphasize to Mr. Q that I’m not “dirty”, just “messy”. My clothes/purses/scarves/etc. have a way of finding and draping themselves over every available surface. I swear, our cleaning lady probably spends more time picking up after me more than, say, cleaning the bathrooms and floors. Sigh. What can you do?! :)

This is a good plan… thanks for the blog. I am the same way as you…. messy, but not dirty. I don’t have any tips but I need some!

I’ll have to check out the blog– thanks! I’m also a messy, not dirty, girl. I’m super impressed with you making do without closets, too; how in the world do you do it?!?!?

We’re messy too. The fact the the mister and I are both messy doesn’t help us any. :)

My FI is OCD about being clean and neat! And well not so much for me. It has been a give and a take on both our parts. I have made a big change in being cleaner and we has tried not to be OCD. We have just picked what we did not want to give up and what we could give in about.

I just fell in love with this blog. Sigh. Something about being a “wife” makes me want to be neater…

i haven’t read the site you linked but i’m a big fan of commerical cleaning (being the couch potato i am wont to be)… whenever a commercial comes on you have to get up and clean until the show comes back on. you’d be amazed at all you can get done in these short time frames.

Glad to know I’m not the only one who leaves things here and there. It drives my DH nuts. Thanks for the website, hopefully this will help me out!

Thank you for writing! I feel so guilty about my messiness. every time i go to friends’ houses, I see everything neatly in place, and when I return home, there is CHAOS. I hate my mess, and I desperately want it to all go away, especially since now I am getting married and moving to my fiance’s house. One thing I find that helps is having people over, because I am more likely to clean up and de-clutter if I know people are showing up. I hope we can both get better about it!!

OK, if you want to get serious on all this house cleaning, check out the book “Home Comforts” by Cheryl Mendelson. It’s the best best best book on having a clean, comfortable home.

I refer to it all the time when I wonder how to wash weird things (down comforter?) and how to generally keep my little apartment in tip-top condition.

Aww! I am so flattered you like my dorky site. :) I am LOVING yours! I’ll come clean your house if you decorate my website, deal?? haha.

No really, I fight my slob-o-vich ways every day. Doing a little at a time really helps. But don’t think just b/c my dining room is pristine right now I don’t have killer dust bunnies under my bed. On that note, I’m off to vacuum! Thanks for reading!! :)

Oh man, you should see our bedroom right now. It’s funny, because we are very neat in every room, super clean in the bathroom and kitchen, but our bedroom makes up for all of that because it looks like a tornado came though it! For us, it is all clothes. We live in an old house, which is charming except for the tiny, tiny closets (and squirrels living in the attic, and plumbing issues, poor insulation lol). Plus, Mr. T has a bigger clothing collection than me. I think we are just so overwhelmed we don’t even bother trying to organize it.

I just read something about organizing (my personal kryptonite) that I’ve been trying to adopt this new year. “Do one thing every day.” Sounds easy. So maybe it’s putting away that pile of laundry or going through the stacked up mail or shredding all the stuff in the shred pile. It seems to be working too. Makes me feel like I’m making a dent in the never ending “clean and organize the house” line that’s always on my to do list, but it doesn’t take up so much time as trying to do it all on a Saturday.
