Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

p1

Early on in the engagement, I purchased four wedding magazines. I still, eight months later, have only four wedding magazines. I’ve found various photographers’, designers’, and real-brides-to-be wedding blogs to be much more creative and inspirational.

I found the blog of photographer, Todd Pellowe, that captured this stunningly simple and very stylish vintage-styled wedding. The bride actually found a 1930s wedding dress. It’s absolutely stunning in its understatement and uniqueness. She has super cool vintage style. It’s so one-of-a-kind, and nothing seems cookie cutter!

Check out this phenomenal, gauzy, silk vintage dress… and the shoes!! How this bride found these, I don’t know. But she is one lucky girl.

I love the way the dress hugs this bride’s figure and the train is just enough to be dramatic without being overwhelming. It’s modern in its slimness; it’s vintage in its simplicity and focus on understated detail…

Here’s a little 1930s gown history from the authorities at vintagegown.com:

For most of the 1930s Brides, a long, sleek appearance was desired and a natural, slim silhouette became the fashion with accents on the bias cutting and draping of the gown’s fabric. By now everyone was copying Madeleine Vionnet’s invention of cutting across the weave of the fabric. Her cutting technique gave such elasticity to the fabric that a silk satin gown could be pulled over the head or just simply stepped into.

Crepe backed silk charmuese was favored for its luxurious drape, feel and sultriness. Crepe fabric was also extremely popular for the bias cut, with versions of cloky crepe, rough crepe, crinkled crepe, metal crepe and Romaine crepe as options. Silk tulle was used for veiling, as it hung limp and straight and matched the sleekness of the gown perfectly.

Here are some more examples of real 1930s gowns:

Another thing about vintage style—you have to have a vintage backdrop! The couple above is from Kentucky. Their ceremony was held at an historic mansion and their reception was held, where else, but at an old Bourbon distillery!

Are you incorporating vintage elements into your wedding ensemble?

I had vintage inspired hair goin’ on…the vintageness of the rest of the stuff I wore, it subject to others’ opinions. Oh, and I know my Tacori rings are vintage inspired.

If I was getting married somewhere other than where I’m getting married now, I would have totally went the vintage route. I love that girl’s dress and shoes. ::sigh::

I have yet to buy a bridal magazine! Blogs and the ‘net are the way to go!

We’re definitely vintage inspired. We don’t have a vintage backdrop, but we’re going with vintage styles and we’re having swing dancing at the reception. And hats! You have to have hats!

This woman is the envy of many women due to her sophisticated style. Too many times we think we need tons of tolling and satin to make a statement, but this dress provides all the exquisite drama of cinderella with an elegant maturity.

My dress was a real 1930’s dress. My grandmother wore it at her wedding in 1936. It was similar to the first 1930’s gown you posted. At first I wasn’t going to wear it but I was able to pull it off. It was the hit of the party and before I changed into my more comfortable reception dress, I walked around the reception so everyone could see it. If you can find one, it’s so worth it! My grandmother would have been proud.

I reluctantly shelled out some dough to buy Reem Acra’s “Heavenly” for that vintage-y look. I love the dress above!!

I love Watters 1090B — I may even have it hanging in my closet as one of two options - the other is Melissa Sweet. It has a vintage-feel that I couldn’t pass up!

Wow, Tallgirl, you are soooo fortunate. I wish I could find one. Sites like vintagewedding.com and thefrock.com are great places to look. But I’m an odd size (short), so could never pull it off. BUT as eileen marie and kenziegirl note, there are many designers doing vintage looks. Mine is a Vera Wang, that is an interpretation of vintage (slim, gauzy, etc.). Another great site, that is very reasonable is unique-vintage.com.

Ok, I’m doing a vintage 1930s look and bought a $60 silk bias cut dress from Target and am going to dress it up with a simply belt of matching silk, using a period ARt Deco buckle I bought for $20 on Ebay and an amazing 30s broach, also from Ebay for $15. The slip is crappy, but fine, and although the seams are well…not fantastic….COME ON LADIES…the dress is going to be worn ONCE.

I love, love, love the dress and love love love that I only spent $100 for the whole shabang (and free shipping).

It has the 30s look.
