Invisalign

January 21st, 2009 @ 11:53 am by Mrs. Bee

I never noticed that my teeth were so crooked until I had a million pictures taken of me from all different angles on my wedding day, because they look pretty straight when you look directly at me.

The horror!

One of my front teeth is actually chipped from when my brother pushed me off a four foot ledge when we were kids.  I’ve had it fixed a number of times, but over time it gradually chips away.  My lower teeth also started to shift in my mid-twenties — something that is very common my dentist tells me.

Well I recently took the plunge and finally got invisalign!  They took molds of my teeth from every possible angle, my dentist sent them to Invisalign headquarters, and in 3 weeks I had my custom trays.  I wear each tray for 2 weeks, only taking them off to eat.  If I stick to it, I’ll be done in 4 1/2 months — not bad at all!

The first day I wore the trays, my teeth felt claustrophobic.  I had to keep taking them off because my teeth hurt!  But after that first day, I got used to it and it was fine.  After I’m done with the Invisalign, I’ll get my chipped front tooth fixed again.  I can’t wait to have straight teeth! :)

If you’d like to learn more about Invisalign, this is a great blog that documented every single step, with pictures, of the entire process.

Are you doing anything to straighten your teeth before the big day?

PS - I adore my dentist if you’re in New York and looking for a referral!

i also would like a referral! my old dentist told me that it would take me 2 years to fix my teeth, but my teeth look very similar to yours, the only crooked part is one of my top front teeth… 4.5 months sounds so doable!

I actually got full braces…I wasn’t a candidate for invisalign (you are lucky). My orthodontist and I had a plan and when my husband proposed I said yes…as soon as the braces come off, lol. So, they came off last June and we were married in October. I am soooo happy I did it, the difference it made is both outward and inward.

i had invisalign 2 years ago, and LOVED it. your teeth will probably feel like that, really tight, every time you switch trays…my mom/hygenist told me to just pop to ibuprofen in the morning if i wanted, so it didn’t get too bad.

good luck, i’m so glad i got mine done =)

Would love your dentist info as well! My teeth started shifting in my 20s. I’m so upset by this because they had been so straight, so now I’d like invisalign before my wedding.

i had regular braces back in high school. invisalign would not have worked for me…i had a similar design for my retainers that i had to wear overnight…i ended up waking up in the middle of the night to take them out! i can’t have the option of removing something because i definitely will excercise it!

a few pieces of advice from someone who’s over half way through a 8month treatment…
- always have lotion around. your hands will get VERY dry from all the tooth&tray brushing
- always have chapstick too! since your lips only touch the plastic now they’ll constantly be dry and cracking
- baby ora-jel works wonders when the brackets rub the inside of your lips raw in teh first week (if you had to get brackets)
- you’re going to go through toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste like it’s nobody’s business… it’s very easy when you’re brushing 2 sets of teeth 4-5x a day
- put your new trays on just before bed and pop a tylenol… not all of your trays will hurt but some will and this will make all the difference in the world.
- you can drink wine/beer with them on (though i don’t recommend red) just flush your mouth with water afterwards, until you can take them off and brush your teeth & trays again
- that first day of new trays just stick to softer foods… it’ll make life more bearable
- other than that enjoy it! it’s so amazing to watch what happens and they really don’t hurt like you’d think. it’s just every once in a while when you snap a new tray in that’s doing some serious movement… the discomfort only lasts a day at most
(i may have jus tmade it sound bad but it’s really not, after a couple of weeks i forgot i even wear them… i still raise soda to my mouth sometimes and then remember i have them on)

I chipped my tooth a while ago, got it fixed, but like yours it needs to be re-bonded- I also have a space that developed in the last two years that I plan on having fixed with it being bonded as well.
If you go to a cosmetic dentist and tell them you want to get your teeth fixed for your wedding they will usually bond your teeth to perfection because its cheap and doesn’t require time for molds, etc.

My teeth were more crooked than yours, and my orthodontist gave me the option of metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign. I decided against Invisalign and chose ceramic braces because of the control an orthodontist can have over your teeth with wires. With Invisalign, you’re depending on the computer model. People don’t even notice the ceramic braces cuz they’re tooth colored. I think they’re an awesome option for a more severe case.

I did Invisalign a few years ago!

One piece of advice: when you get to the last tray, or the retainer one (different orthodontists handle it differently) make SURE to wear them every single night! You don’t want your teeth to shift! I finished my invaslign schedule 3 or 4 years ago and I still wear mine every night, which is why my teeth haven’t shifted!

Good luck!

@Mrs. Bee: I am looking for a general doctor. I have a obgyn that is great already. It is so hard to find a good doctor nowadays. Thanks for the dentist referral.

I did something called Red, White and Blue, which is very similar to Invisalign. Instead of trays every two weeks, there were three trays over a longer period of time. They’re more uncomfortable than Invisalign because each tray moves your teeth more at once. But Red, White and Blue cost the same as braces (Invisalign costs more than braces even though they say it doesn’t).

My advice is to take ibuprophen or tylenol and then put the tray in before you go to bed. In the morning, it might be painful to take them out, so pudding, Boost, and applesauce are your friends!

Happy smiling!

I wanted to do invisalign or braces, but my doctor kept telling me that my gum are weak after I had my periodontal treatment. The only thing I can do is cosmetic bonding to fill in my gaps. I wish I had kept my teeth in good condition, now I don’t have many options which is frustrating.

I got braces 4 months after we got engaged! I started off wanting invialign but my teeth were too crowded and had to have 8 removed. When they remove teeth the only option is clear braces.

They are working great thought! 3 months in and my teeth are looking so pretty, almost straight. It hurts at first but you will be SOOO happy when you see the results in a couple months. ;)

I’m on my fifth set of invisalign trays at the moment, so I am have been at this for about 2.5 months so far. I’ve still got approximately 6.5 months to go. My teeth aren’t horribly crooked, but there is one of the bottom which was “locked out” by surrounding teeth when I was a kid. That one tooth is lengthening the process a bit.

I AM already noticing a difference though! While I do think the Invisalign trays are a bit uncomfortable and kinda gross, I can not wait to have straight teeth! That and a little whitening and I’ll be good to go for our big day!

Oh, and if anyone needs a referral in LA (west side), my doc is great. My FI also did invisalign and ahad porcelain veneers put on (due to tetracycline stains) and his teeth look SO amazing.

I’m currently taking the Invisalign path, too! Currently on tray 12 of 13….can’t wait to have these “buttons” taken off!

Definitely a must-do if a bride-to-be is a little self-conscious about her smile! And who knows…some girls might get lucky and qualify for the Express Invisalign (half the price!)

Yes! The invisalign buttons are not cute. I am used to them now, but I can’t wait to get them off. Luckily, most people don’t even know they are there until I point them out.
