The Look of a Decade

January 21st, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Avocado

This post by Becker has me thinking, “Will my wedding day look stand the test of time?”

All of these brides are ridiculously beautiful but you can definitely tell some of them are brides of the 90s by looking at their photos.

Did you focus on a wedding day look that was classic, or did you embrace the 2000s and go with what you love? Do you have any predictions for what the look of a bride married in this decade will be? What will Becker be posting 10 years from now?

Love this post! It has definately been contemplated to death by many brides. In the end, I have a feeling my look will be dated for one specific reason–I’m birdcage veil bride! Now of course they’re considered a timeless classic look by many with a discerning eye for style, but ultimately, their resurgence in popularity is very of the moment. I find that when I look at bridal photos from different periods, veil trends are a strong clue as to the era. Just look at all the top-of-the-head poofy veils in the brides from the 90s…. and remember the “headband” style 80s ones? I imagine that in addition to the birdcage, the mantilla and other long, single layer drapey veils will be signatures of the 2000s. Great post, Mrs. Avocado!

I think about it, but my own mother rocked out in a victorian style wedding dress and mini hat with a blusher and veil in the back! I look at her wedding album with love - its really my dad’s Tom Seleck impression that lets me know it’s in the 70’s…

When we were planning our wedding (Aug 2008) my FI asked me “what can we do so that our wedding won’t look dated?” My reply, “stay married for 50 years!” Our wedding will look dated in 10-15 years, it will happen for every bee in the hive. But, in 25-40 years, all of our weddings will be beautiful and vintage! I remember being a teenager and looking through my mom’s album (constantly) and it seemed so dated to me (though beautiful and special). BUT - when I finally decided to get married they’d just had their 30th and everything about their wedding was now “in” and vintage!

@West Coast bride: I agree. I’m wearing a birdcage as well, and I think that’s DEFINITELY going to date my photos. Oh well, I think it’s going to look fabulous. :)

Except for my dad’s hair-do and glasses, you would never know my parents got married in the 70s. That’s what we’re trying to do for our wedding - keep in classic so that we will never be embarrassed! But in the end you have to go with what you like - you never know what will be considered “lame” 20 years from now. If you ask brides who had big hair and sleeves in the 80s, I’m sure they didn’t do that because they thought it was a ridiculous looking fad!

Hmm, sweetheart neckline, contrasting colored sash, big floral hairpieces, pick-up skirts…

Strapless necklines and colored sashes seem to be all the rage. I think birdcage veils will be a dead give away of this period as well as colored under layers. I’m a person who tends to stray away from thing that other people find the current craze, however I’ll probably end up in a strapless dress with a colored under layer and a birdcage veil. (I won’t do the colored sash though!)

I’m trying to avoid the trends in order to have a wedding that looks somewhat timeless, but I do think no matter what you do your wedding will in some ways reflect the era you were married in, and that’s fine.

As for my parents wedding, my dad’s tuxedo is a bit dated, but my mom’s dress is gorgeous and could easily be worn today, and I love that. Although the hairdos of the bridal party give it away that they were married in 1970. :P

i’m not sure if i’m a real trend-evader or if i’m just too cheap to buy a birdcage veil and too lazy to dye my crinoline. perhaps i’ll luck out and be accidentally classic, ha!

my mother wore some layering chiffon (i think) dress with a hat. she loves saying how gorgeous it was back then, and i love quickly pointing out how oober oog-lay it is now. good times.

btw, i actually really like wedding photos that are ‘timestamped’ by the elements. at least those are my favorite old wedding pics to look at.

yeah, i already know that this “modern vintage” theme that i’m so enthused over, complete with the mantilla veil and aqua color scheme will be played out…and will be so obviously and painfully 2000’s. sigh. they’ll talk/laugh at this sort of thing on on “Totally ’80s”, except it’ll be called “Totally two thousands”.

I love looking back at my aunt’s 80’s wedding pictures with the big poofy sleeves- standing the test of time is boring.

I went with what I loved and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I agree with Mrs GT - I actually LOVE wedding photos that are clearly from another era. It makes them more story-ish.

This has been a huge issue for me, especially looking at my mother’s totally 80s wedding photos and my aunts’ narly 90s images! I just can’t help but be tempted by that vintage modern look of today, and classic is just not me! It’ll definitely be a time warp for my kids to check out my photos, but hey, why not?

I actually thought all of these brides looked pretty timeless….maybe I’m just out of touch with fads but nothing really stands out to me as being dated to the 90s(unlike poofy sleeves/hair of the 80s)

When I was choosing my wedding look I tried to do something I thought was going to look ok in ten years. My dress was fairly simple, my hair was worn down in loose waves (how I’ve worn it for years, with slight changes), and I kept my bridal accessories to a pair of blue and green badgley mischka chandelier earrings (which will probably be dated, but I love them and will always love them.

00’s are definitely marked by plunging necklines or strapless dresses and weedy-thin sashes on the brides and bridesmaids. At weddingbee there’s also a trend of colored shoes and crinolines.

My thoughts? Embrace what you love or shows your character, and cast of what’s only trendy. Sure, photos will become dated, but that’s just part of having a moment in time.

I’d never realized it before, but the big poofy veil perched right on the top of the head is very 90s, isn’t it? I’m so used to seeing mantilla and birdcage veils now!

I say go with what you love. No matter what, something in your wedding photos is going to give away the era — the cut of the groom’s tux, your hair, your bridesmaids’ dresses, something. My own taste is pretty simple and classic, and I’d like to think my FI and I will look timeless, but I’m sure our kids are still going to point and laugh at our wedding photos!

i love being able to identify which decade a wedding came from. i don’t think i’ll mind so much if my wedding picture looks sooooo 2000. ;)

Two toned dresses are pretty mid-2000’s. And I can say that…because I wore one.

I always thought that the swooped over bangs schelacked to the forehead paired with some sort of pouf on the back of the head was very ’90s and that’s what most of those brides have.

Damask! I love it, but it’s such a trend right now. Coloued accents - shoes, crinolines, sashes, panels (like Alfred Angelo) - are all going to “date” us as 2000’s brides. But I don’t think in a BAD way…I hope.

I think pick-up skirts will look dated as well. I agree that colored sashes and panels will look dated as well, but I’m torn on the birdcage veil.

Also, in addition to the poofy veil on the top of the head, I think what gives a lot of the 90s brides away is the bangs.

I like to *think* that mine is pretty timeless, but I’m sure that’s what our mothers thought as well! So, it doesn’t bother me one bit :)

Trends that will date the 2000’s? Color! In the form of shoes, crinoline, ribbon accents, dresses, etc. (& I love it!)

I’m going for a retro glamour look..think 1940’s to 1950’s hollywood glamour with a touch of the old south.

I will be wearing colored shoes though (marciano’s tessa) and that will just have to be my dead 2009 giveaway!

I definitely went for classic from the dress to the ‘do to the veil. However, I love what was said about all things modern being sweet and vintage later. The bottom line is to do what you like:)

I was also thinking…isn’t the birdcage vintage inspired? It may “date” pictures somewhat, but in a very classic and elegant way:)

Well I wore birdcage, mantilla, and colored shoes, all of which are mentioned above. I guess it’s unavoidable. I really like that everyone was able to talk about this without making it sound like the things they mentioned are a “bad” thing. Hooray for looking like we got married in the 2000’s!

While mantilla and birdcage veils are popular now, poofy veils were popular long before the 90s so I really don’t think that dates it specifically to the 90s. Same with mantilla and birdcage veils….mantilla veils have always been popular in some cultures and birdcage veils are too vintage to make me think they will make photos look dated to the 2000s.

I do think that pickup dresses will look dated in the future, I’m not sure about colored shoes or accents. I think the cut of the dress can make it look dated more than anything else(and possibly hairstyle).
