Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

I love Art Deco. It’s that intersection between classic and modern… and the perfect inspiration for a modern vintage wedding! So I feel very fortunate to acquire from Mr. P’s mother (an antiques dealer) the most GORGEOUS and unusual pair of authentic Art Deco (c. late 1920s) silver and marcasite earrings. They’re huge (almost three inches long), yet still understated. I love them so much because they’re so one-of-a-kind. I’ll reveal them at the wedding. But here is a similar pair (mine does not have rubies, though, and are more spade-like… in fact, they’re not all that similar, but you get the picture):

Art Deco: Quintessentially Vintage Modern : wedding jewelry P2 p2

These reproductions are nice, too, but way too expensive at over $500 (they’re diamond and white gold). Source

Though I love art deco, I think I’d like to have just a few touches of it here and there, and not make an entire theme of it. (I’m not sure, but maybe it would come across as too costume-y?).

But I do adore the style. Here’s a little more about it as a movement:

Art Deco was a popular international design movement from 1925 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, and modern. {source}

I love this style too! My engagement ring belonged to my FH’s grandmother and is from the 1920’s. It has the most intricate geometric pattern along the band….It’s completely unique and I adore it. I’m getting my band custom designed to match, but I might have to be on the look-out for some of those earrings!

Our wedding is hugely inspired by art, and even art deco in some spurts. My fiance, a musician, was also partner in a mid-century modern vintage furniture store for years, and we have massive tendencies toward deco, mid-century, etc. Good luck, and keep us posted with your deco touches–can’t wait to hear!

@Miss Perfume: Cool! Glad you think so. Also, “I”=”A”…a be dumb.

@MISS STOUT: Wow! I love mid century modern. There’s a place in DC called Millenium Decorative Arts that we love. So you probably already know that the term really should be “contemporary” vintage style rather than “modern” vintage…but the former has just too many syllables! Would love to know how you incorporated art deco!!!
@Kristyn: good lawd, you are sooooooooo lucky to have an deco ring…that has family history to it!!@Miss Peep Toe: i won’t make a “peep” about it!!!

I love love love the Art Deco era, it always reminds me of a glamorous flapper and adds a little classic fun to any look. Sooo perfect for weddings!

I work at Doyle & Doyle, an antique, estate and fine jewelry store in New York and we have a great selection of Art Deco pieces.

Check them out here: http://www.doyledoyle.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&keywords=all&template=PDGCommTemplates/HTN/KYG_artd.html

Along with a little history lesson!
