How to Get Perfect Curls

January 22nd, 2009 @ 1:49 pm by Mrs. Bee

I know you’re probably sick of me talking about myself by now, but since some of you asked how Joyce curled my hair for the Bee Meetup, here are the details she provided!  :)

Products/Tools:

How to Get Perfect Curls : wedding hair Tigi

1. Start off with damp clean hair.  Blow dry on a medium setting (not hot) with volumizing mousse (a dollop) from root to ends. Scrunch hair near the roots with fingers as hair is starting to dry to give it lift.

2. Sectioning is the key. Separate your hair in 3 sections (the 2 sides and the back leaving the front to do last) with strong hair clips.  Start from the back of the head and move to the front, curling about 2″ sections of hair at a diagonal, first spraying each section with hairspray (Joyce used TIGI Bedhead Masterpiece Shine spray). She mixed it up a little with the direction of the curling so the curls didn’t all go one way.

3. After all areas are curled and cooled down, take hair wax or pomade - Beyond the Zone Deranged molding wax - into the palm of your hands and scrunch gently into hair ends so it controls flyaways and gives hair more texture.  Be careful not to put too much or else it will weigh the hair down.  Curls will relax a bit throughout the day so curling a little tighter is fine; just manipulate the wax into your hair to shape it.  Also give your hair a final spray with a good stronger spray (TIGI Bedhead Hard Head) for holding power.

I’ve always loved curling my hair, and I typically use Bumble and Bumble styling products — I love the thickening spray and the does it all hairspray.  I also use their brown hair powder when I don’t have time to take a shower (which is sadly quite often).

But I don’t style my hair often, so I don’t know too much about styling products. Please recommend your favorites in the comments section!  Happy curling! :)

I hate to sound dumb, but can you please tell me more about the hair powder? Sounds like something I would definitely benefit from!

I forgot to comment on the makeup thread you had posted before–how does your skin react to Mac makeup? Mrs. Bee, you mentioned you have eczema. I heard it can be irritating and since I have eczema, I’m worried that it’ll really make me break out.

@lilythespitfire: for some reason, i don’t really react to makeup. my eczema flares up mostly due to stress and cold weather, and it’s usually on my body more than my face. mac makeup seems to be no problem for me.

@Mandy: @Patty: when your roots are oily, you put on some of the hair powder (it comes in different colors to match your hair). the powder absorbs the oil so you don’t look as funky. ;)
