It’s a Nice Day For a… WHITE Wedding*

January 22nd, 2009 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Quiche

(*I love you, Billy… but let’s not get too carried away here!)

It wasn’t until I started stalking wedding blogs that tablescaping even crossed my mind. I am now obsessed. Obsessed! Like most weddings I’ve been to, I figured we’d just have your typical white linens, plates, floral centerpiece, and voila! The table would be set. Oh, how very, very wrong I was.

Our resort’s receptions are white. White, white, white. And I can’t. stand. it.

How I long for pops of color or prints!

Yikes… perhaps not THAT print.

Okay, they also have a sage green option, but it really isn’t our style. Or color.

So, let me backtrack a bit. They do offer some colors and some prints, but they are limited and not even close to what we want.

Enter Tablescape Inspiration Board #1:

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

I love woven ribbon table runners (not those colors), but have no idea how they can be executed on the day of the wedding. My OCD will want them all spaced evenly. Are they sewn? I’ve seen some DIY tutorials, but haven’t watched them yet (oops). I also thought about draping strands of capiz shells down the tables (and wonder if these would be easy to make?).

I’m not a damask bride, but I love that table runner in the first image. Image #2, from Anthropologie, is actually a roll of wallpaper. That could work as well, right? In a different color scheme, of course.

The chair covers are also (surprise!) white. I am going to get tulle for our chair sashes. I am considering making navy and deep pink tulle sashes… or using one color for the sashes, then making the tablescape the other color. AH!

Mr. Quiche is pretty much open to whatever I decide (as long as it looks nice and doesn’t send me over the DIY-edge). I am going to head to the fabric store this weekend to play around with some table runner ideas. We’re having a Valentine’s Day brunch, so I may test out a few different ideas (in reds and pinks, of course) for that party. I’ll post the results after!

How have you handled breaking up the white monotony? Do you have any tablescape inspirations that you can recommend (and are travel-friendly)?

I am an avid fan of runners. What a fantastic way to work a brilliant print onto your tables, without overdoing it.

We broke away from the starch white linens…opting for black ones, with black/white damask runners and square centerpiece “mats”. (Varying amongst table size). We brought our pops of color through our centerpieces. I wanted that to be our ultimate table focal point.

You’re definitely on the right track! I’m so happy to see so many brides that are bored with the white-on-white table decor. Adios, 20th century. =)

My friend used wallpaper for table runners at her wedding, and it looked great. It was very inexpensive, but it didn’t look it. She was able to get a pattern that had she bought similar in fabric form would have cost her a fortune.

One other thing to consider is the weight of these table cloths, or table runners. We rented satin table cloths and shear overlays from a nearby town for our wedding. We had to have them UPS-ed to our location. We spent a lot of money on shipping due to the weight. It is amazing how heavy all of that fabric can be! And we had a very small wedding, with only 5 tables. Just something to consider, since you are having a destination wedding….

I was also going to suggest runners and also chargers. They can both usually (and runners made) be rented for a nominal fee:)

I think we are going to sew runners. I haven’t figured out the logistics yet, so I”m anxious to see what you decide. If I do it before you, I’ll be sure to pass along any tips.

@Melissa: Good call! I hadn’t even thought of that. Perhaps runners are the way to go! We’ll probably have the same # of tables as you. Thanks!

@MMWedding: Aw - that would be great!

Definitely runners. We had totally white table clothes and napkins. I bought fabric for $1 a yard, and runners are really really easy to do. Brought a nice touch of color to the room.

I’m a fan of the runners as well! I just got married in Grand Cayman on Dec. 30 and we brought our own table runners with us (which my grandma made, so they were extra special!). They turned out perfect, and weren’t difficult to pack. Also, we’ll be using them again at our at-home reception!

Runners go hand and hand with my love of long banquet tables at weddings, so Yippee! I find all-neutral weddings, and all white weddings to be very sterile and unoriginal (sorry, but in the world of wedding blogs and mags, I’ve seen my fare share and that’s just how I feel!) That said, when you have your location in breathtaking natural scenery, I think it’s important not to over-design the space (I know, I know, how can I say that to a designer!!)

I would try to come to some decisions about your flowers and centrepieces before selecting runners. The centrepieces or the runners can be a real source of drama, but you don’t want them to compete for attention.

I would LOVE to see a tutorial from any who has done wallpaper runners! I still haven’t finalized rentals for ours, and if I can avoid that cost, I will!

We bought some cheap blue sheer fabric and my SIL sewed the edges to make table runners. It really dressed up the white table linens without breaking the bank. It cost about $70 total for 14 table runners.

We made (but didn’t use) napkin rings out of dark red cardstock with silver stamps. Definitely travel-friendly, and ridiculously easy to make. The husband did ‘em while watching TV.
