Ring Check

January 22nd, 2009 @ 6:28 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

Right after Mr. Peep and I got engaged, we jetted off to Hawaii for a vacation with his family. This left me in a very odd position- all I wanted to do was show off my new sparkling engagement ring, but ocean and new ring just don’t mix. Not to mention, as soon as we landed, we found out that our fax to get the ring insured did not go through.

So, I found myself in Hawaii with an uninsured engagement ring that was still a bit too big. I pictured our Hawaiian vacation ruined, and me spending the rest of my vacation searching through the sand with this guy:

Ring Check : wedding rings san francisco Metalde

After a bit of a debate with the Mr., we decided it was ok to wear the ring poolside, etc. But if we were to go to the beach or in the water, I’d have to put on what we termed “a stunt ring”. (I at least wanted people to know that I was engaged!!)

This is when Mr. Peep invented ring checks. He’d yell out, “ring check,” make me stop whatever I was doing, and show him my finger with the ring on it.

Thankfully, we were able to get the ring insured while we were on vacation, and when we left Hawaii I put my sparkler back on and the stunt ring back in my jewelry case.

Fast-forward 13 months. I was on the bus on my way to work when Mr. Peep called me. He asked if I forgot something at home. I had left my mittens that I had gotten over the holidays at home because the weather had warmed up, but that wasn’t why he was calling. He promptly let me know that he found my engagement ring on the bathroom counter, in case I missed it later that day. Big OOPS.

The whole day I felt odd. I couldn’t just flash my sparkling ring that yells ’sorry buddy this girl’s taken’ to the guy in the elevator who was checking me out. Well, at least I thought he was checking me out. No one noticed that I didn’t have my ring on at work, but I felt naked without it.

I ran home, cleaned my ring, and put it back on my finger where it will remain for the rest of my days.

But wait—there is a point to this long, drawn out story. This weekend I noticed that one of the prongs seemed to be snagging on everything. After further inspection, both Mr. Peep and I realized that it needed to be fixed.

So once again, my sparkling ring was put away, and I put on the standby stunt ring. My week has been crazy busy, so unfortunately getting my ring fixed has been put off until this weekend.

But, here’s the thing: I miss my ring, but my plain silver band stunt ring seems to do the trick. I realized this week that while I love my ring, I love it because it sits on my left ring finger. You could say that I am just into the status symbol it provides, but really, I just love that I get to show to the world how much I love Mr. Peep and that he is my one and only!!

It has made me truly appreciate that it’s not the size of the sparkler, but the reason behind it. Maybe I am just figuring this out late in the game, but it’s better late than never, right?

Oh, and Mr. Peep still yells across the room every now and then, “Ring check!”

Have you ever forgotten your ring, or had to wear a stunt ring?

I have to yet to re-size my ring! I woke up two weekends ago eyeballin’ my finger sans ring. Turns out, it came off and was intermingled in the sheets. Definitely a scare!

I’m without mine right now and I hate it! My hand feels so unadorned! It isn’t a big, heavy handed sparkler, but I agree that looking down at it makes me think of my man and our love, and puts a smile on my face all the time (and no one really noticed it’s been missing except West Coast MIL!) I just had it re-sized and then had to say goodbye to it right away so the custom guy can make my band. I figured I’d rather be without it once for a few weeks than part with it several times! The only reason I’ve ever not worn mine has been because it was too big. Once I get it back on my finger that’s where it will stay!

oh man, the day before my fiance and i took a vacation with my family (for a family wedding, of course) the stone popped out and flew across the room. His aunt let me borrow one of her fake rings, and it technically did the trick, but we also took e-photos that week, so that was frustrating. The photog kept asking me to show off my ring, but i was so embarrassed and kept saying “no, it’s not my ring!” Oh well. At least it didn’t show in any of the photos. ;)

that’s how i feel about my promise ring my bf gave me. i love it so much, not for the size of the stone [its actually my birthstone] but the meaning behind it :-)

When we started talking about rings, I specifically steered him towards smaller rings with stones that sat more flush to the band because I’m not big on jewelry and I wanted both a ring that looked good and a ring that was practical. The one we chose isn’t big or overly adorned and frankly wasn’t that expensive, but I love the look of it, it’s very unique, and once he gets around to actually asking (I suspect I’ll be newly engaged in late March), I’m really looking forward to being able to wear it without having to worry about it.

the proposal ring wasn’t the permanent ring, so we called it a “practice ring”

I took my ring off around Christmas to make food and clean dishes etc. When FH came over we went out to get coffee and I left my ring on the Santa figurine I dubbed as my ring holder that day. I felt naked without it :-/ I put it back on a soon as I got home :)

I have never forgotten or lost my ring yet. *Knock on wood* The only times I take it off is when I get in the shower or I’m washing dishes. My biggest fear is dropping my ring in the hole in the sink/bath tub!

my 2 cents and advice for you all…

my friend and our jeweler for my engagement ring and our future wedding bands gave me this advice…

1. whenever you take off your ring for any reason, always put it in the same place. i.e. in the ring box on your night stand, on your necklace, etc.

2. speak to your jeweler, whoever they are, and see if you can set up some sort of a maintenance schedule. my friend personally creates a maintenance schedule for all of his clients, so every 3 months since we got engaged, he checks the ring for any looseness in the diamonds or bending of any prongs. he offers this for free… it’s his guarantee that his work is always top notch.

HTH!

**Knock on wood** I’ve yet to… i’ve been without it only for a few hours b/c i had to replace a missing stone in my setting and that was hard enough! I am always staring down to make sure the pave setting is in place and the ring is on my finger … it’s a scary feeling … just thinking about it, gives me chills :-/

Miss Texas, that is great advice!

I wear a “stunt ring” almost all the time. While it does not have the same sparkle as my real one, I do feel better having it on because of what it stands for. I live and work in a developing country where it is very common for ex-pats to be targeted for crime. I, nor the future hubby, thought it was a good idea to wear high value jewelry and risk my personal saftey much less losing the ring. A ring you can replace but a desperate person with a weapon is not worth it! I highly encourage anyone traveling to wear a “stunt ring” with little or no bling. Rings are just material things in the end, but your personal safety is so much more!

Oh, I totally know! I forgot it once when I went to work, and also felt like I was without something all day. I get that feeling when I go running (until the “omg, gonna die” feeling sets in on long runs.)

When we go hiking, I don’t want to bring it for that fear of losing it and spending the hike retracing our steps instead of getting to our meetup point with our ride, so I wear my “hiking ring,” a small gold band with hearts on it and a tiny diamond chip: a ring I found in the gutter when I was 12. Very handy as a substitute.

I wore a stunt ring when we went to Dominican Republic — I’m glad I left my big sparkler at home — we felt safe there, but I wasn’t about to tromp through Santo Domingo wearing a 1.5 ct. center stone.

I don’t have a stunt ring, but I think this may be a good idea. My engagement ring is a pearl and pearls are a little (lot) high maintenance. Has to come off when washing hands, house work, shower, pool, anything with chemicals basically. So a stunt ring would be perfect.

And I agree with Miss Texas…always put it in the same place when not wearing.

Yes, my bf didn’t get my engagement ring on time. The jeweler was really bad and promised it would be there in 2 weeks when it took over 5 weeks. We left on a trip (3 weeks after he ordered it) and he had to get a replacement engagement ring to propose to me with on our vacation. I’m glad I had this ring instead. I wouldn’t have wanted to wear a flashy new ring around Europe. I would have just been too worried. When we got back from Europe the actual ring was finally ready at the jeweler and my bf proposed with it! So I got two proposals! Now I wear both rings - the real engagement ring on the left hand, and the replacement one on the right hand so that I can always remember our trip to Europe and the original proposal.

I love the idea of a stunt ring. I think I may wear it on my honeymoon, since we are traveling out of the country, and I wouldn’t want to lose it!
