About Mrs. Champagne

Okay, so I will completely admit that many documents and designs are so much easier with Photoshop, but I’m simply not willing to shell out the money for a program I’ll use a few times. I’ve searched and searched the Microsoft Word functions, and I didn’t see anything that would let me do circular text. I called my brother, who told me to check Avery.com for some free software. It was seriously SO easy, I had to share.

Step One: Download free software and templates for CD and DVD labels. Our computer uses Windows Vista, but this program is also compatible with other Windows platforms.

Go to Avery.com and click “Get Free Software”

Click on the far right program titled “Avery Design Pro”

Step Two: Open Avery and on the main menu screen, click “Design from Scratch”

Now, an item list of templates should appear. If you’re using Word and you only want the CD label without the Jewel tray insert or cover, I found that the easiest template is ’Item #5692 CD Labels’.

Step Three: After opening your selected template, you should see a blank CD. You can also pick from pre-designed templates as well by clicking the “pre-designed template” button on the left.

Step Four: Pick your text. To insert a circular text box, click on the button in the menu on the left of the screen, or select ’Insert Circular Text’ from the toolbar. Insert your desired text in the box and change the font or size. Don’t worry about the placement of the text, because you will change that next.

Step Five: Click on your text and you will see the text box. Drag the circle until the text sits where you would like. Here I just did it in two steps.

Step Six: If you want an inner circle on your CD, just repeat the steps above. The two text boxes will function separately for future sizing and changes.

Step Seven: Insert any images you may want. You can use monograms, clip art, anything! One thing that’s nice about this program is you can flip or rotate the image after it’s been added. I used the button on the top to center a component of our monogram.

Step Eight: Add any other text or images you want—I added a horizontal text boxt to write a quick thank you to our guests. I shamelessly stole this text placement from Mrs. Pom, who had CD favors to die for!

So there you have it! I took this image, printed it out, and Gocco’d the CDs. I’m about as technologically challenged as you can get, and even I was able to do this!

Any other good suggestions for wedding related, or just helpful templates?

If anyone wants a great FREE design software, google has one called Gimp that is almost as good as PhotoShop and a lot more intuitive for people who are just casually using it.

Very cool! I have been making my own CD lables in Word with a template I downloaded from the MS website. They have plently of cool, graphic-y clipart to use, but I’ll have to give Avery a whirl. Oh, and I got a great deal on 200 lables for about $12 (incld s&h) on ebay.

I just wanted to throw this out there.. No disrespect to anyone BUT I really hope when you make CDs as your wedding favors that you’re actually purchasing the songs. If you’re not it’s stealing and stealing is a crime. My fiance is in the music industry and it’s heartbreaking to see all these people who are losing their jobs because the music industry is rapidly declining. These people are our friends and family and this really hits close to home.

@Kristy: it’s part of my monogram created by Aimee at Creativemontage.com
@YSAP2M: yep, of course I’m buying them. I think we’re all pretty sensitive on wb to the rules of the trade :)
