Wedding Blues Breakthrough

January 23rd, 2009 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Meatball

I got a job yesterday! Meet the new official errand runner for a local accounting firm. Yep, I’ll be driving all around, getting groceries and lunch, picking up dry cleaning and computer monitors… anything they need. I think it’s a terrific use of my masters degree. :)

In all seriousness, I’m just so happy to have something. These days, more and more of us are forced to take positions that are below our normal skill set and standards, just to pay the bills. There ain’t no shame in that game! Gots ta stay afloat somehow, right? This sounds like a pretty painless way to do it.

Tiger, my personal trainer (and apparent fairy godmother) helped me get this job. So, thanks to her, not only am I getting a body makeover, but also out of the unemployment nightmare. And not a minute too soon, either!

This Saturday marks our 4-month wedding pre-versary (if it wasn’t already a phrase, it should be). We’re starting to really feel the pressure to spend, make payments, and generally start draining our meager savings toward making it happen. As an unemployed couple, it sure can be guilt-inducing to spend money you might later need for rent, etc. So, recently we’ve been walking on eggshells about it, putting it off, fearing for the future.

Even though I’m taking a pay cut of about 50% for this, it still changes everything to have stable, reliable income each week. Now we can at least rest easy that our mouths will be fed, and we’ll be ok. It’s like permission to start feeling excited about wedding planning again, and such a huge weight off our shoulders. I hated feeling guilty about the wedding… what a drag, right?

So, things are looking up, indeed. First order of business, buying the decor items I’ve been hungrily eyeing for months on end. Yeaaaaah booooooy.

Have you ever felt wedding guilt? What causes yours, and how do you overcome it?

Meatballz, I be SERIOUSLY HAPPY FOR YOU! Congrats on the new job!! Know that you’re not the only one. EVERYONE is feeling the pinch and austerity is the rule of the day. So glad you can rest easier now!!! Your wedding will be creative, super fun, and full of good conscience, I’m certain.

My big wedding guilt right now is over BM dresses. Asking my friends to pay HOW much for their wedding day attire? I’m trying to be reasonable, and many people have told me it’s not too much money, but I’m still majorly feeling badly. :-(

Congrats, Miss Meatball! I’m really happy to hear you have a job. Yay for you!

I hear you on the 4-month-to-go wedding money stress. It really seems like EVERYONE wants my money now. Not just the wedding vendors, but my 6-month car insurance payment is due, there are birthday gifts to buy, and a lot of other little things that are adding up fast!

Congrats! I am so happy for you!! I just had to take a pay cut with my job and it really has made me feel guilty about shopping and not saving! I still have almost 2 years, but when you have to buy a house and save for a wedding, that is not a long time! I am really trying to save save save! Good luck to you!

I totally understand where you’re coming from. My boy just graduated and finding a job is rough! We are concerned about finding stability within the next six months as I will be out of school and in the job market very soon as well. Eep!

congrats miss meatball! i only hope to have as much luck as you soon with the jobhunt! i’m going through quite the financial crisis myself. FI is having to endure the burden of paying our portion of nearly everything (we’re dividing costs between us, my ‘rents and his ‘rents).

while he keeps telling me that he’s “supposed” to be taking care of me like this, i can’t help but feel completely guilt-ridden that he’s spending all his hard earned money on this wedding and i can only contribute nickels and dimes. :(

I feel your pain, Miss Meatball! I, too, had a layoff scare this week….cutbacks are scary! I have a hard time signing those checks, lemmetellya.

Chin up, though! Your special day is almost here, and no one can put a damper on that. =)

I’m in the same boat! My fiance graduates in May… and my income supports us for now… but that same single income can’t pay for our wedding as well. We’ve put certain things on hold (upgrading our chairs, getting a bigger photography package, purchasing gifts for our bridal party, etc) until we know for sure that we’ll have that extra income. Today I won a 3 day 2 night vacation!! And winning that vacation allows me to be put in a drawing with 5 other couples for the chance to win a week long ALL INCLUSIVE (including airfare!) HONEYMOON to Jamaica!! That would free up a lot of cash!! **Crossing my Fingers… Saying my Prayers**

Definitely been feeling the guilt over the last four months as my FI has been unemployed. He just got a job a few days ago. Yeah! He’s taking a pay cut but who isn’t these days! We’re paying for the wedding ourselves and I’ve continued to save for it as well as pick up all those other small things that normally we might split so it’s been a strain on me as well. If we touched the wedding money we wouldn’t be able to have a wedding at all so he’s borrowed money from his parents and even took a little money out of his life ins. policy. It hasn’t been easy but hopefully things will let up a little bit in the coming months.

That is great news, I know what you mean about the guilt. I think that just the way things are it can make for guilt.

I’m really happy for you — congratulations on the job! My husband and I are both well employed, still, thank God. But I still feel guilty about our wedding… I really kind of think we should have spent less, or made it smaller, or something. A lot of the things we paid for now don’t seem that important…

Congrats!

Even though we are not getting married until 10/03/09 we just bought trip insurance for our honeymoon that specifically had a clause to protect us if one of us gets laid off or if one of us gets laid off, gets a new job, and cannot get vacation time approved. Scary times……
