Gung Hay Fat Choy!

January 26th, 2009 @ 6:31 pm by Mrs. Toucan

Happy Chinese New Year!

This Lunar New Year is the first new year that Mr. Toucan and I are married. It means that it’s also the first year we’re giving out these, instead of receiving them:

Gung Hay Fat Choy! : wedding cultural Laisee

{our custom-made red pockets display our last name phonetically translated into Chinese*}

Lai See, or red pockets, are filled with money and given to wish the recipient good luck and wishes for a prosperous new year!

Typically, these red pockets are given to the unmarried from the married, and only to people younger than the couple. Luckily for the Mister and I, we don’t have too many relatives that are younger than us!

Despite having to give money instead of receiving it, it has kind of been fun to participate in Chinese traditions from the married side!

Have any traditions changed for you since being married?

*We are quite fortunate that Mr. Toucan’s family name translates into Chinese very well! I’ve been told that it translates to “Very harmonious”. :)

Happy new year! I went home to LA to celebrate the new year, just so I can benefit from my last year of being able to receive lai see. :-)

This is our first Chinese New Year and I bought Hello Kitty red envelopes much to my new hubs’ dismay. It was fun giving them out this year! :)

Next year, we’re going to see if we can get the ones with hubs’ last name so that we can use them for red eggs, weddings as well as new years.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where you can buy the surname envelopes?

@bbpacco and meli: I had mine made in Hong Kong. My aunts took a trip there in October and brought them back for me.

cute!!! We’ve been engaged for 4 years now! Our family teases us saying we’re pushing the wedding back every year because we don’t want to give up receiving the lai see! haha…
