Love For Organza - THE Dress

January 26th, 2009 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Piglet

Being the fickle person that I am, I went through several phases while looking for the dress. Each time I narrowed the dress requirements (e.g., sweetheart neckline, fit-and-flare, strapless, white, etc.), I would find a dress that met all the requirements, yet I was never able to pull the trigger in fear that I was succumbing to another impulsive buy (much like my Filene’s purchases at the running of the brides). :) The good news is that one requirement stayed constant throughout my dress shopping journey, which really helped narrow down the selection of dresses at the boutiques. I wanted a dress made of silk organza. The fabric is so light, airy, and comfortable, PERFECT for our outdoor ceremony. The two almost-dresses were both by Melissa Sweet and are quite popular amongst the hive.

Contender #1: Melissa Sweet Aurora. This dress fit the bill. I tried it on several times and convinced myself that this was the dress. The one aspect holding me back was the comfort factor. I’m pretty lanky and bony with the exception of my poochy mid-section area. I didn’t want to feel self-conscious throughout the night, so I opted to continue the dress hunt.

Contender #2: Melissa Sweet Dora. I adored the Swiss dot organza fabric and the A-line silhouette was much more comfortable than the Aurora. I immediately began thinking of ideas for a polka dot theme. This dress truly makes you feel like a princess and continues to be one of my top picks throughout the process. The thing that held me back was the heart-shaped neckline. To me, it was unflattering, regardless of how much pushing and squooshing was done. Hence, the search continued.

THE dress. :) I had seen pictures of the Amsale Bali, but never thought anything of it since I was focused on finding a strapless dress. The dress is a spaghetti strap A-line gown, with an Alencon lace bust, and a satin material around the waist that ties in the back. Most importantly, it’s organza! Looking at real brides on the Amsale website helped solidify my decision. There’s no way I could afford it new, so I was lucky enough to find it pre-owned in all ivory. I love love love it!

Yes! I tried on some really wonnderful dresses, also wanting something light and comfortable for our outdoor wedding. Nothing I tried on was light or confortable enough, so I ended up buying a matte jersey dress! I feel really lucky that I can get away with it since we are having a very casual wedding.

AHHHHH! I love your dress! It’s great that it’s a bit under the radar and not a variation on the same (albeit beautiful) theme. It’s definitely a standout! :)

How ironic! I’m a Melissa Sweet bride, and my sister wore Amsale! :-) Bali certainly does look breezy — I love the waist-to-back tie.

I was set on a light fabric as well. Although our summer wedding will be inside (a church), we’re going to walking through Old City (Philadelphia) for candid shots between ceremony and reception. Silk tafetta fit the light and breathable bill for me!

Yes! I was totally fabric obsessed. It had to be lace. In the end, I got not only one layer of lace, but two layers of lace over satin, and it is everything I dreamed of! That being said, I came very close to buying organza too - it was my #1 “almost” dress!

Love your dress. I was looking for something with a bit of lace and ended up with satin and I couldn’t be happier. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the story!

Your dress is amazing! Before I shopped for dresses, I liked some fabrics in photos that were just too heavy for me in person. I thought I wanted satin and ended up with lace.

I definitely was! I wanted taffeta because I knew with certainty that I did NOT want satin. It was so heavy when I tried it on in the store, and I just couldn’t see it for my August wedding. I was so frustrated by bridal salons that brought me satin after satin dress when I had made my wishes clear.

Your dress is gorgeous!

Thanks ladies! I have yet to take pictures, but can’t wait to share.

@Lillindy: When I saw Meredith on the Amsale Real Brides website, I fell in LOVE with the dress even before trying it on!

@Miss D’orsay: I had my heart set on a strapless from the get go, but ended up w/ spaghetti straps - it’s funny how things pan out! :)

Happy Monday ladies!

I’m like Kate - no satin. I wanted raw silk, but my budget will accept taffeta. :-) I am still on the search.

Those dresses are so beautiful. I am in love with everything that had Organza. And I was once obsessed with organza dotted dresses.
