The Dress Search Part 2: Serendipity!

January 26th, 2009 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Kitten

So, after a few setbacks, I had put my wedding dress search on hold. That week, I had a chat with Jennifer Nichols, our wedding photographer, about what we would wear for our engagement photos. Jennifer suggested I wear something brightly colored. When she saw me visibly cringe at her suggestion (I’m a neutral kind of girl), she suggested that I wear some sassy shoes to the shoot. I was thrilled about the idea and left her studio for Neiman Marcus Last Call (the Neiman Marcus Outlet) in Austin.

As soon as I walked in, I spotted a wedding dress in the front of the store and a big “SAMPLE SALE!” sign. Although I knew I had my mind set on the Lia and Amelie dresses, I had to check out the sale. I walked to the back of the store, past the doors, and into the warehouse, where I discovered racks and racks of designer gowns! They had Vera Wang, Reem Acra, Carolina Herrera, Monique Lhuillier, and others! And what did I find among the racks and racks of gorgeous gowns, but my coveted Amelie dress! I also found another, similar, Monique Lhuillier dress named Ava that I loved. I couldn’t decide which one I liked better so I bought them both! The best part is that both of these dresses were in AMAZING condition and cost a fraction of the original prices!

Ava

The Dress Search Part 2: Serendipity! : wedding wedding dress Ava I never did end up finding any shoes that day. After I found my dresses I ended up calling an engaged friend of mine and ordering her to come check out the sale. We closed the place down, leaving with two dresses apiece! It turns out that Neiman Marcus closed the bridal departments in all of its stores except for its flagship Dallas store. It was selling off all of its samples, no matter what style they were or condition they were in. And they decided to have the sale in Austin, of all places! It was a once in a lifetime sale that I stumbled upon on accident!

Wow! Congrats on finding two great gowns! I imagine you’ll pick one, though, to wear for the weddding. What will you do with the other? Sell it? Return it? Use it for a TTD session?

There was a local Chicago wedding dress designer whose dresses I was drooling over, but never dared to step foot in her boutique because I knew I would fall in love & I just wasn’t going to spend $3000 on a dress.

I went to a sample sale boutique in the area and sure enough my Esther was there for $700. It was fate!

What a find! Either dress is going to look gorgeous on you. But I am curious, which dress are you going to wear?

You got super lucky! Yes, which one will you wear (or is that a surprise)? I got lucky with my dress, a Vera Wang sample–too!

I did end up picking a dress, but you will have to stay tuned to see which one :)
@karilynn6: The sale is over now! It ended before I started blogging for Weddingbee! I made a few PSAs on the boards when it was going on, but the event wasn’t very well publicized at all!

I bought a sample Ella by Essence of Australia dress for my wedding. After spending the day trying on every strapless/ballgown-esque dress in town, my mom and MOH convinced me to try on this slinky cowl necked dress, that was just perfect! It had a few marks on it, so I got it for $300 down from about $1500. I had it cleaned by a wedding dress cleaner, and it was perfect!

Hey, any chance you’d be willing to sell whichever one you aren’t going to wear? :) I’m absolutely in love with them both!

Wow, beautiful dresses! I got lucky too and walked out with a $1000 sample for $90! It was 90% off and I got another 10% for opening a charge card with them. GroupUSA, I think they’re all over the country and their dresses are there own design and very affordable.
