About Mrs. Spring Roll

Bustle

January 27th, 2009 @ 6:30 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

As you may recall, back in September, I fell in love with my wedding dress and purchased a new one. I could have taken the store’s dress home that day, but I wanted a sparkly new one for my big day.

Unfortunately, when you order a new dress, it takes a while to arrive. I was told that I would receive a phone call at the beginning of January to pick up my dress. Well, the beginning of January came and passed, and I hadn’t receive a call. Worried, I phoned David’s Bridal last week, to hear “your dress has been here for weeks, and Debra’s is here too”. A few things are wrong with this scenario: First, my sister’s name is Deidre, not Debra. Second, why didn’t she or I receive calls when our dresses arrived. I fought the urge to go Bridezilla, and thanked the lady. After all, our dresses had arrived safely and were ready to come home with us.

Sunday the Spring Roll girls (mom, sister, and FMIL) and I made the trip to pick up our dresses. Arrived safely? Check. Ready to come home with us? Not mine. You see, when I tried on my dress, the associate informed us that my dress had a bustle and that we would be shown how to bustle the dress upon pick up. Au contraire, my dress did not have a bustle; however, it could have a bustle, after alterations, and sixty dollars.

There is no way that I could wear my dress without a bustle all night, so I gave in. Although I am not so happy with the store’s service, I am definitely happy with my dress, and the future bustle.

Do you plan to bustle your dress?

I’ve heard similar stories about DB, but yay for getting your dress! The bustle looks great…I’m going on Friday to see what we can do with the train on my dress :)

P.S. That’s a BIG glass of (Miss) Champagne!

(Whistle!) How cute are you?

I will definitely bustle my dress. I bought a sample, so it’s in my spare bedroom closet. But I’m totally dying to take it in and get it altered and bustled and clean and all…. Ah! Hate. Waiting. Haha.

Your bustle looks great! As the wedding guest who always has white thread and a needle in her purse at a wedding - please, please, please bustle it so the hem is straight with the front. I can’t tell you how many bustles I have fixed in some corner of the reception hall after the bride, groom or otherwise stepped on that 1/2″ that draped on the floor because looked good in the dress shop. And consider pinning or handtacking the bustle loop over the button (or whatever) so that it doesn’t keep falling off. My SIL’s bustle fell off the loop every single time someone walked behind her until we safety pinned it from the underside.

That really sucks that DB did that! I would like to say I would have argued the bustle cost but really I would have just given in too. You look beautiful in the dress and the bustle is gorgeous!

I agree with everyone above, you and your dress are beautiful.

I LOVE how your bustle looks like it was there all the time as part of the dress, I’m thinking I’m going to borrow that photo to show the seamstress when my dress finally comes in!

I really like your bustle, and your dress is so beautiful! I had a bustle on my dress, but it didn’t stay past my first dance and parent dances. The lady who altered my dress was really nice, but I had to doubt her ability to do a bustle correctly. Because my bustle fell every time I sat down or danced to fast music.

I love your dress!! I’m going to avoid the bustle issue by getting a dress with little or no train. So many weddings I’ve been to, the bride’s bustle falls down and she has to have people help her fix it. That would be so annoying!!

I’m so jealous that your bustle looks so effortless! Mine is turning out to be a pain the *you know what.*

With a think skirted trumpet silhouette, my dress will need to be bustled, but probably very simply like yours. I don’t know very many people who haven’t had to do some sort of bustle, and I’ve never heard it being included in the price of the dress. In my experience, it has always been a matter of alterations, required at your own expense, separate from the purchase of the dress. I’m not saying this to negate your feelings, but just to let you know that your experience is not uniquely unfair! It looks very purdy Miss Spring roll!

I almost bought that dress! I hated DB too! my sales rep didn’t help at all, until she thought i might buy it, then she got dollar signs in her eyes and started giving me an updo, I kid you not. For weeks after giving Db my contact info, sollicitors called me, and so I reported DB to the better biz bureau. sorry about your debacle, but that is truly a wonderful gown!

I can’t believe they charged you $60 for your bustle! I think you look wonderful in your dress, and I’m so happy for you everything came together all right. However, I think it’s thievery to charge $60 for doing such a minimal alteration.

Aww, I’m sorry your customer service was yucky! I had a bad experience when my sisters and I went to DB, so we ended up avoiding them and finding dresses elsewhere.

Your bustle looks beautiful though! It accentuates the pretty slim line of the dress.

Grrrr!! How frustrating that DB not only forgot to call when your dresses came in, but also forgot to mention that YOU had to pay for the bustle.
But, regardless, it looks beautiful!
On a totally different note, did you change your hair color?

Wow. That looks great. Too bad you had to unexpectedly pay extra for it - but it DOES look really good. My friend Jaimie had similar problems with DB and her bustle. Also there was a big hole in the train when she returned to pick it up after the *first* round of alterations.

I’m definitely bustling. My mom is a bustle expert! At almost every wedding I can remember, my mom has been the go-to woman to bustle dresses and mine will be no different. Before I even made the final decision on my dress, my mom had been up under the dress and bustled it several different ways (who knew there were so many ways to bustle a dress!)!! All I know is the way I’ve seen dresses like mine bustled by “professionals” is definitely not the best looking bustle!

Ask your seamstress to show you several options, I’m sure most often they only show you the easiest one for them and then charge you the same no matter how much work it is!

I totally understand - my sales associate at DB wrote down the wrong sash number for my girls and they ended up having to reorder the right one. Then they proceeded to call some girls but email me for others rather than call them. Weird.

How did you feel about the alterations people there? I am going next week (it looks like to the same one you went to) and am nervous about the alterations!

Your dress is lovely, and looks great with the bustle! I was MOH in my best friend’s wedding last summer… David’s was a NIGHTMARE to work with. We, too, got worried when we didn’t hear from them about dresses. Not only were they NOT in when they were supposed to, but when we called to check on them they told us to “call back in a few weeks”. Not “we’ll call you, no worries”. Oh no. We were told to just try back later. :-\

I know what you’re talking about with DB though. All the salesgirls kept going on and on about bustling the dresses with no mention of cost. I know it’s an alteration, so no thank you! I got one without a train.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal with David’s Bridal! I also had to also deal with their horrible customer service when I got my dress. Especially when calling them for simple things such as making an appointment - always get the same ice cold/mean response. Figured they had their share of bridezillas, but still doesn’t give them the excuse to treat everyone as such!!! Had I not found the IT dress there, I wouldn’t even bother stepping in their store again.

Glad to hear that you “safely” got your dress - its gorgeous and you look so beautiful in it!!! :O)

Your dress is gorgeous! I luv it! Was it the DB down by Westshore Mall? Because I’ve dealt with them before and the service is horrible! After I drove all the way down from Spring Hill twice and had a strongly worded conversation with the manager did they finally get my order right. And I was only a bridesmaid, I can’t imagine how frustrated you were. It’s great that everything worked out in the end.

First of all, I am so sorry you are having problems with DB, they seem like nothing but trouble and I think I’ll be sure to steer clear of them for bridesmaids dresses! Second, your dress looks great! I chose a dress with a very minimal sweep train so I won’t have to bustle it at all. My wedding is on a boat with a comically short ‘aisle,’ so I thought if I had a train I would have to have it bustled the entire time, why bother.
