Our STDs!

January 27th, 2009 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Kitten

Save the dates, that is! I’m still not totally accustomed to this new use for the acronym STD. I think high school heath class has drilled the less-desirable version into our heads! But writing STD is so much easier than spelling out three whole words!

Anyway, about those STDs—I had always intended on being thrifty and making our own. I thought it would be a great way to save some money and do something creative at the same time. I scoured the internet for ideas, and these were my three favorite choices:

I love photo booths, so I had planned on using this photo strip design ever since we were first engaged (way back in 2006!). It’s cute and unexpected (or at least it was in 2006… everyone has probably seen one of these by now), and would be really easy to make!

This one comes from Martha Stewart Weddings. It’s a postcard with a tiny envelope attached. I would have had to adopt a cute, funky writing style like the one shown in the picture. Also, on the backside of the postcard, we would have printed one of our engagement pictures.

This STD is SO cute. The couple met at a coffee shop, so they went back to that shop and had a couple of cappuccinos made with heart-shaped foam. They photographed them with the newspaper and book on the table and later Photoshopped the details of the wedding on to the book. But my favorite part is the newspaper. They Photoshopped a picture of them AND one of their cat on to the newspaper! It is so sweet and personal! I am dying for one of my friends to copy this idea so I can live vicariously through them and this awesome STD.

Now, on to the STD that we actually picked! Like I mentioned before, we had lots of fun ideas for STDs. And we had lots of time to come up with them too, having a two-year engagement! The only problem was that all three of those ideas involved engagement pictures. I haven’t talked about our photographer drama yet (we’ll save that for another day), but to make a long story short, our wedding was less than 6 months away and we didn’t have any engagement pictures! We needed to get STDs out fast, and didn’t have time to do a photo shoot or hand make our own STDs. That’s when I found Laura Hooper. Laura is a super-talented calligrapher who designs wedding invitations and. more importantly for us, custom maps! I fell in love with her hand-drawn maps of wedding locations. I knew that having one on our STD would provide the perfect introduction to Grand Cayman for our guests. Laura’s maps aren’t cheap, but they are worth every penny. She included our wedding venue, hotels, and other Grand Cayman landmarks. I loved the map so much that I ordered a large-sized version for us to frame and hang up in our house.

I enjoyed working with Laura so much that I am having her design our invitations as well! Her work is out of our initial invitation budget, but I am so in love with her designs, I’d rather cut corners somewhere else.

What have you splurged on that you didn’t originally plan to?

I LOVED the Martha idea as well, but am currently making my own, and they’re way different than what I thought I’d do. I’m doing DIY for the STDs (hehe) so I can splurge a bit more on the invites!

I originally planned on taking those photo coasters and making them my save the dates or invitations but shipping them would be way too expensive for a save the date. I had to remind myself that the invitation is so much more important than an STD, which only puts someone on notice. I’m doing a postcard/envelope style thing now and since I can actually draw (It’s the one talent I do have), I’m drawing my map on the front of the envelope, the backside will look like a normal postcard (except its and envelope), and when you open it inside will be our DIY photo booth style Save the date, printed on magnet paper.
I’m so in love with my idea that I’m a little distraught over the fact that I have to wait for 4 more months to send them out. :(

I’m hoping to splurge on Laura as well, her work is beautiful! We splurged on our catering/venue, which has meant everything else is on a tight budget.

:) I still giggle whenever I say or type STD, too. I love your choice. They came out beautiful! And if it’s something that is important to you, you should totally splurge. You can always trim something that you care less about. Our splurge is the venue, but we’ll be doing more simple flowers because the room won’t need much decoration.

honestly, we splurged on the whole wedding!!! we were originally going to just have something small and intimate with just our parents and sibs, but now our guestlist is (thankfully capped) at 400 ppl!!! but the way things are panning out… we’re glad we’re doing the big wedding instead of just the small one.

Your STD is so cute! I really love that Martha Stewart one too. Wouldn’t that be a cute way to deliver a little STD magnet? Does anyone know how you would get the envelope to stay put without falling off in transit, though?

I just want to note that our “photographer drama” has nothing to do with Jennifer Nichols, our lovely wedding photographer! We originally hired another photographer and things didn’t work out with him!

@driftslikesmoke: I bet if you put the envelope through a Xyron machine, it would stay on without a problem!

Your Save The Date is SO CUTE! Laura did an AMAZING job, but I don’t think I need to tell you that!
That postcard with the envelope is a great idea - we were thinking of doing postcard Save The Dates and I wasn’t sure what to put on the back, now I know.

I love the mini envelopes! We’re probably doing postcards of Maine, where I’m from and where we’re getting married, and this is the perfect way to avoid the printing issue! We were worried it would be really hard to print on postcards, but this is the solution!!!

Laura Hooper did the quote I used on our invites and througout our wedding! I love it and plan on using it in our house somewhere. Are you planning on framing the map and hanging it somewhere someday?
