That Wedding: We Dance

January 27th, 2009 @ 2:18 pm by Mrs. Avocado

My first dance post only has 5 photos, a paltry amount for me.

Why?

Because writing it makes me want to cry.

That is all I will ever see of the dance we took lessons for, the dance we left appetizer hour to practice. The dance my friend said was “like a fairy tale”.

Our wedding was lovely, and I enjoyed every moment. But sometimes I think we all need to voice our regrets, and admit that weddings aren’t perfect. So here is my regret: We should have hired a videographer. I should have eliminated that visit to the spa on Thursday before the wedding and paid someone to capture every moment. My pedicure only lasted 2 weeks, but that video would have been with us for a lifetime.

So this is my wedding, full of mistakes and happiness. Weddings are always Mary Poppins Perfect, aren’t they? Not quite perfect, but because of what we come away with, very very close.

Oh Kelli Nicole, I wouldn’t have anything without you!

What kind of dance did you do? Was it choreographed professionally? What song was it to? I want details :)

Awww, I’m sorry about your regret, Avocado!

Mr. MagPie and I agreed early on that we needed a videographer, if just to capture the church ceremony (including homily and vows), significant dances (our first, Dad & me, FMIL & Mr. MagPie) and toasts.

At least you have some video recording — and some very vibrant photos of it as well!

:( We have a few regrets, too, but continually remind ourselves that the day was beautiful–as was yours (your pictures are seriously amazing). As a note to others out there, we couldn’t hire any videographer either, and asked two uncles to videotape. What they caught was definitely enough for us to show and edit, though it would have been a dream come true to have Still Motion.

Hug to you though!

Mrs. Avocado! Don’t despair! Your photography tells a thousand words about how beatiful your first dance was, even if we can’t see your major chops on film for life! They are so full of emotion, and for only a few pics, I really get a sense of the whimsy and love there.

I appreciate you mentioning your regret too. You’ve recapped with such humour and joy thus far, I know that you are just being honest, and I appreciate you willingly acknowledging that perfection is not what we get, nor is it what we should aspire too. I would have to agree though–your wedding came very very close :-) Best wishes to you and Mr. Avocado…..when do you move to Poland??

Oh that’s sad, but at least you have some video of it, even if it isn’t professional!

@Miss Meatball:This post was both low on photos and details wasn’t it?

We danced to Meet Me By The Water by Rachel Yamagata. It wasn’t choreographed, we just took a few lessons to be able to foxtrot instead of the stand and sway.

@West Coast Bride: Thanks for understanding. Sometimes I think we need the release from admitting that things weren’t perfect, you know?
As for Poland? We definitely have a few years to go. We need to make some money first!

awe, avocado — you looked so lovely dancing. i’m sure you’ll never forget that moment. and you have some video footage from friends throughout the day too.

that is what we did at first too — asked the flower girl’s father to video tape the ceremony so we’d have it. i was so glad to have his footage!

but for those who have yet to get married — i’m with avocado — i’d find some way to have video footage, even if it meant asking a friend or hiring a student if a “pro” video was out of the budget. also, you might be able to ask for a price just for the shoot with no editing, then try your hand at editing it yourself (like mrs. flamingo did) or saving up for the edit later. at least it will be “in the can” or these days “on the harddrive.”

I Love Love LOVE that last picture of you and the Mr - it is SO SWEET!
Thanks for the advise - I’m on the fence about hiring a videographer right now and you’ve convinced me to go with it.

Awww! Thanks for this post…you’ve just convinced me to hire a videographer. After a 4 month debate in my head of trying to figure out if it is worth it or not. So thanks for this Mrs. Avocado.

Thanks for this post and sorry to hear your regrets from what looked like a beautiful wedding. I was also trying to decide if a videographer is worth it but now I think if we take dance lessons, I’ll definitely want a video of our first dance.

We did end up hiring a videographer last minute since I knew we’d forget the speeches, the ceremony and miss many little things that went on that special day. My one regret in regards to the videographer is that we only hired him for a certain number of hours and when his time was up he came up and asked me if I wanted him to stay for anything- well I wasn’t thinking and shoud’ve sent him to my mom but instead no thank you so much and off he went- BEFORE the cake cutting and our little surprise tradition and dance with my mom- oh so sad we have a lot of still pics but video would be great. Oh well we can’t do everything and know the day is special none the less!

Ah Avo… sorry to hear you regret not having a videographer. I for one wanted to have one and Mr.F didnt …. I paid for it and still am now ;) I went over budget…. but in my eyes it worth it.
And for you other brides to be…. you can save money by editing yourself. Its doable - like diy your flowers.

I’m with you Mrs. Avacado. At the time, the huge cost of a videographer didn’t seem worth it. But now all we have is some awful choppy footage of my saying only part of a vow, and none of my DHs vows. What I wouldn’t give to hear him say “I take thee to be my wife.”

The pictures and videos that you did get turned out great. I too wish that I would have considered hiring a videographer, especially after seeing some awesome videos from other bees (like Mrs. Milkshake!).

chalk it up as one of those imperfections that made the day perfect, sweets. from the pictures, it STILL looks like a fairytale, and the fond memory will forever be with you. pics and videos are simply helpful reminders :)

cheers to being able to look back, pout a little, and move on with our fab lives huh?

Oh Ms A, I’m so sad you didn’t capture it on video for yourself- but in some ways it’s nice- it’s there in your memories. I know a few couples who don’t have their ceremony photographed or videoed at all (or even have guests) which I know is really what you did but they did it because they wanted the moment preserved in their minds and only as their memory. SO i guess it’s like your beautiful memory and you’ll never have to see where (if!)you put a foot wrong- it’s still perfect :)

Phew that was long. Meanwhile Ms SB- I saw that! No dance?
